[...] When I’ve pointed to Wikipedia, Apache or Linux as harbingers of a new, non-market, open source economics, one of the stock responses is: “now show us something more spectacular.” The problem is, these modest, functional and free products are already in their own way spectacular. Wikipedia is the biggest information product in the world; Apache runs half the world’s web servers; and Linux is the system of choice for at least a third of all servers (the computers that run businesses) and 97% of the world’s supercomputers.

Uber Hires Uber-Lobbyist For European Expansion - Digits - WSJ
The company hired Mark MacGann, the former head of government affairs and public advocacy for exchange group NYSE Euronext in Brussels. MacGann updated his LinkedIn profile to include the new job, and confirmed the appointment in a message to the Journal. MacGann, a 20-year lobbying veteran, has been appointed head of public policy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He left NYSE Euronext in May after four years at the firm. MacGann’s appointment comes after Uber hired David Plouffe, a key strategist behind president Barack Obama’s two presidential campaigns. The firm’s chief executive Travis Kalanick said in a blog post in August that Plouffe had been hired to oversee global policy, communications and branding at Uber.

As Samsung Falters, An Opening For Startups | TechCrunch
[Samsung] is so identified with the government and the progress of Korea that the country is occasionally referred to locally as the Republic of Samsung. So when Samsung repeatedly presented bad news to investors this past year, particularly its results last quarter that showed a drop of 15% of its operating profit — the first drop in three years — there has been something of a slowly boiling panic underway in the country. From talks with people who work at the company, stress levels are off the charts, intensified by the pressure to return previously-paid performance bonuses. My colleague John Biggs has already talked about Samsung’s race to the bottom, but that was before these most recent results. With consumers unwilling to pay top dollar for Samsung’s best smartphones and Chinese manufacturers readying a dizzying array of competitive and inexpensive products, Samsung faces what might be considered an almost overpowering inevitability crisis about its downfall.

How Jonah Peretti and BuzzFeed Got to $850 Million | Re/code
BuzzFeed +500 people. Even if you want to slight the company as nothing more than a Reddit repackager, someone has to do that repackaging. But if you’re only looking at BuzzFeed as a media company, then that $850 million might seem optimistic. Last year, people around the company pegged BuzzFeed’s 2013 revenue at $60 million, and now they’re supposedly on track for $120 million. Which means Dixon and his co-workers at Andreessen Horowitz are likely valuing Jonah Perreti’s company at something like 10x trailing 12-month sales. Investors value the New York Times at 1.2x sales. Time Inc. is at 0.77x. But for all Airbnb and Uber’s much deserved “disruptive” acclaim, these businesses have older roots than the hype cycle suggests. According to conventional wisdom, Airbnb and Uber enable “regular individuals” to make a few extra bucks renting out an extra bedroom or giving fellow travelers a ride. They unlock a new class of assets, where fellow consumers share in collaborative consumption. In fact, while these businesses nailed rapidly changing consumer preferences  –  buying services at time of usage, rather than owning assets fits the post-recession, Millennial sensibility of the moment –  the supply side of their businesses does not match the narrative. Supply in these marketplaces is increasingly delivered by entrepreneurial, small business owners, not fellow consumers. Uber and Airbnb are best understood as reimagined franchise operations that leverage mobile data, the social graph, and continuous feedback loops to deliver a better consumer experience.

Staying in someones place is very different than a hotel. a hotel is generic. every AirBnB is different. It is an experience. not only might you experience a new city, but you also experience someones life, how he or she or they live. Their view. Plus - this is the time of the Airbnb - experience services - because millennials favour experiences of commoditised consumer goods. and babyboomers want that cake too because of the youthification trend. only retrospective u see the pieces of the puzzle.
