The end of Atlanticism: has Trump killed the ideology that won the cold war? | News | The Guardian
"special relationship" - The foreign policy establishment has been lamenting its death for half a century. But Atlanticism has long been a convenient myth // Atlanticism has never had a very stable meaning. For one thing, the US and Europe have not always considered each other natural political partners. For most of American history, there hasn’t even been a unified “Europe” to partner with. [...] Advertisement

In 1973, Henry Kissinger, himself a transatlantic refugee, launched a “Year of Europe” tour to try to save the relationship in the name of containment, preventing the further growth of the Soviet Union. Speaking as Nixon’s national security adviser, he asked whether the Atlantic community could thrive as the memory of the second world war began to fade. As the “rigid divisions of the past two decades diminish, new assertions of national identity and national rivalry emerge”. He argued that Americans should continue to support European unity. “If we permit the Atlantic partnership to atrophy … we shall miss our historic opportunity for even greater achievement.”

Why Brexit could hurt the US, too
Washington fears that a decision to abandon the European project, in which Britain has been an often-reluctant participant since 1973, would threaten to unravel the union, a vital ally, as it struggles with disunity and unleash a new instability in an already dangerously volatile world.
While advocates of a British departure say the country will be stronger freed from the shackles of Brussels bureaucracy, opponents fear it could dismember the U.K. should Scotland decide its future still lies in the E.U. and demand a fresh independence vote. [...] And throughout his presidency, Obama has expressed irritation at the neediness of European leaders competing for the attention of the American president. He's grumbled that European nations won't do more for NATO and even publicly rebuked Cameron in a recent Atlantic magazine interview for not doing more to bring peace to Libya after a NATO intervention in 2011 pushed by him and other Europeans.

Barack Obama says Brexit would leave UK 'back of the queue' on trade
US President Barack Obama has said Britain would go to the "back of the queue" for trade deals with the US if it votes to leave the European Union.

[ via truthdig ] Russia has also decided to move now following the failure of Mr Putin to reach any agreement with the US at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York where the threat of Isis has been high on the agenda. … [Russia’s] priority is to defeat Isis and then save the Assad regime in Damascus. Despite all the controversy over whether Assad should stay or go, the war would carry on in either case. This is very much a civil war with committed supporters on either side. In the short term Russia wants to stop Isis, and if possible defeat it – though this not likely to happen.

Syria crisis: Russia begins air strikes against Assad foes - BBC News
Russia has begun carrying out air strikes in Syria against opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, Moscow has confirmed. The strikes reportedly came in the rebel-controlled area of Hama province. Washington was informed in advance that they were about to take place. Syria's civil war has raged for four years, with armed groups - some of them Islamist, including the Islamic State (IS) group - fighting to overthrow the government. The US and its allies have insisted that President Assad should leave office, while Russia has backed its ally remaining in power. The latest developments came amid reports that President Assad had formally requested Russian military support. //&! Why Putin Wants to Meet Obama - Bloomberg View
Acting alone in Syria would be extremely risky for Russia. Putin can ill afford an unsuccessful military operation. Coordination with the U.S. would greatly increase the chances of success. For the U.S., though, an alliance with Putin comes with strings attached: Once Islamic State is defeated, Washington would need to discuss the post-war setup with Moscow, and they have a poor record of agreeing on anything. Also, if Obama retreated on his commitment to bring down Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and agreed to a smooth transition of power in Damascus, he would give Republicans a new pretext to accuse him of weakness.

The Refugee Crisis Is Changing Angela Merkel - Bloomberg View
Yesterday's meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of German states yielded an important number. Every incoming asylum seeker will cost the federal government 670 euros per month ($747) plus a further 500 million euros for housing. Amazingly, the huge outlay is not testing Merkel's resolve to accept the refugees or her Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble's determination to balance the budget without new debt. But the chancellor is still going out on a limb: if Germans tire of the influx of Syrians and Iraqis, she will be held responsible. [...] So helping to resolve the Syrian conflict which is the source of the refugee crisis is becoming a matter of political survival for the chancellor and her post-retirement legacy. In a speech on Wednesday, she called for cooperation with Russia, Iran, Turkey and even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad himself -- whom no one else in the West wants to engage --to end the war. //&! bv.ms/1KXyf3p

BBC News - Ukraine: UK and EU 'badly misread' Russia
The House of Lords EU committee claimed Europe "sleepwalked" into the crisis. The EU had not realised the depth of Russian hostility to its plans for closer relations with Ukraine, it said. It comes as French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about the crisis at a joint news conference in Paris. Ill-equipped The committee's report said Britain had not been "active or visible enough" in dealing with the situation in Ukraine. It blamed Foreign Office cuts, which it said led to fewer Russian experts working there, and less emphasis on analysis. A similar decline in EU foreign ministries had left them ill-equipped to formulate an "authoritative response" to the crisis, it said. The report claimed that for too long the EU's relationship with Moscow had been based on the "optimistic premise" that Russia was on a trajectory to becoming a democratic country.

How Much Does It Cost to Be Ambassador to Hungary? - Bloomberg View
n.pr/1AfA3NV &! The corruption here is multilayered. There is the corruption of governance and diplomacy, in which ambassadorships are sold to the highest bidder. And then there is a more subtle form of corruption, in which the people’s representatives are made to feel as if they must provide cover for the corrupt practices of the executive branch. Strangely enough, another of the Obama administration’s nominees for a crucially important ambassadorship, Max Baucus, the former Montana senator, provided a roadmap for truthfulness in the nominations process. Baucus, chosen to represent U.S. interests in Beijing, said, at his own confirmation hearing, “I’m no real expert on China.” He was confirmed by the Senate anyway. &! Google - Klüngel-Republik &! May be for western people it's hard to believe how can it be possible to support this crazy regime. I can tell you that even top managers from leading russian internet company (from my private conversation with them) dreamed about great russian firewall because in that case, they won't have competitors like Google. Furthermore even IT guys like Putin regime and don't get worry about crazy laws passed against the internet. I assure you in that because many of my colleagues really like Stalin and really like what's happening in Ukraine. Almost all people in Russia really hate western world. They don't care about currency exchange rates and inflation, they care only about imperialism. When Putin made desision about Crimea, and when people totally supported it, I stopped believe in Russia at all. Russia is a pure soviet country, with pure 100% soviet mindset, vast majority of russian people like idea of self-isolation. This is why Russia has no future as a liberal market-driven country.

NSA: Snowden-Dokumente bei The Intercept, TAREX-Basis in Deutschland - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Was will Putin?

8 Reasons Why A New Global Financial Crisis Could Be On The Way - NASDAQ.com
Like any other bubble, it will only become one once it bursts. What is different in 2014 is that now central banks have a great tool to prevent real estate bubbles: Basel III and its countercyclical capital buffer. [...] Let us not forget the lessons of the Great War (we are now commemorating the 100-year anniversary): the butterfly effect can be deadly in politics. +++ http://ti.me/1r4NfEy "Raghuram Rajan, the governor of India's central bank, fears supereasy money from the world’s central banks is inflating assets and encouraging bad investments. Ukraine Exposes Globalism's Flawed Premise | Curtis Ellis
It is a modern Western conceit to view human aspirations strictly through a materialistic lens. Alexander Solzhenitsyn decried Western society's tendency to focus on the accumulation of material goods to the exclusion of all other human characteristics. This stubborn insistence on seeing the world in purely economic terms blinded us to anticipating that Vladimir Putin could do exactly what he did. Putin wasn't supposed to risk upsetting "the market" - but he did. He was supposed to fear sanctions and economic backlash - but he didn't. the only possible explanation is that he is disconnected from reality, as Angela Merkel reportedly said. [...] the assumption that nationalism is a thing of the past, and that people around the world think, conduct business and share the same values as the Western elites.

The War Nerd: Here’s everything you need to know about “too extreme for Al Qaeda” I.S.I.S. | PandoDaily
As the Scriptures remind us, “Do not believe the hype.” The hype of the moment is ISIS, the Sunni militia that just drove the so-called Iraqi Army out of Mosul, Tikrit, and other Iraqi cities. This is one of those dramatic military reverses that mean a lot less than meets the eye. The “Iraqi Army” routed by ISIS wasn’t really a national army, and ISIS isn’t really a dominant military force. It was able to occupy those cities because they were vacuums, abandoned by a weak, sectarian force. Moving into vacuums like this is what ISIS is good at.
