Sugar tax: How bold is it?
[Gov still wants to carry out a consultation = Watered down by Food Lobby ] But the more important question is whether this will have an impact on child obesity rates. One in 10 children start primary school obese. By the end, one in five are obese. If you add in those who are overweight, it's one in three. [...] our diets are simply not good enough. [...] Food Foundation produced a model of a typical family's diet. [...] consumed too much sugar and saturated fat and too little fibre, fruit, vegetables and oily fish. [...] However, this should not be seen in isolation. The government is expected to publish its much delayed child obesity strategy in the summer. That could include restrictions on advertising and marketing, as well as a sustained campaign to reduce the sugar content of foods and drinks across the board.

NHS mental health funding falls in England - FoI figures - BBC News
[ minority of patients. Can't do that with cancer treatment! Public sentiment would rip you apart. ] Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request showed the budgets for mental health trusts fell by 2% from 2013/14 to 2014/15. This compares to a rise of 2.6% in hospital trusts' operating budgets, according to analysis by the Health Foundation think-tank. The Department of Health said mental health care funding overall was rising. In the year to April 2016 the budget for mental health trusts was projected to rise just 0.3%. Of the 53 out of 59 mental health trusts in England which responded to the FOI request, 29 said their budget would be lower this year than last. [...] funding is not keeping pace - and many are facing cuts. [...] In Scotland, mental health spending was up just 0.1% last year, and down a projected 0.4% this year. [...] money increasingly is getting sucked in to meet their rising costs, [ diet-related and chronic preventable diseases ] & bbc.in/243Y4Yp

Is scurvy making a comeback? - BBC News
Scurvy is on the rise in England, [...] In the year up to April 2014, it was the primary diagnosis behind 16 hospital admissions and the primary or secondary cause of 94 admissions. Between 2009 and 2014, admissions related to scurvy went up by 27%. That's in line with percentage increases in hospital admissions for malnutrition and gout - a common Victorian complaint traditionally associated with too much port and an unhealthy lifestyle - over the same period. The most recent research, conducted in 2014, suggests that gout currently affects one in 40 people in the UK. [...] What does this say about the nation's diet? [...] While the increasing prevalence of gout in the UK is a concern, experts put it down to an ageing population and a growing obesity problem. // &! bbc.in/1ZP1bDL - Child Protection failed. @4:40 - RE: Food as Reward = Business as Usual (BAS). Any food that triggers some feel good chemicals can be abused: junk food, fast food, processed food, alcohol, tobacco, drugs. Some are legal others carry a stigma and others are illegal ... depending where you live. (Liberal) Progressive policy making would be to legalise all but put a progressive and aggressive tax on those. An addiction & harm tax along the nudge theory. And with that tax revenue to pay for public health care and public education campaigns to raise awareness and change perception, image and opinion. Not pulling the nanny state. But if you use tobacco, you pay twice; now with your discretionary spending choice and then with your health, and we let you know on the packaging. And we can also subsidise cycle to work schemes, cycle lanes, cycle shelters.

More maternity units closing doors, union warns - BBC News
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said a shortage of midwives was having a major impact and mistakes would "almost certainly be made". Some 42% of units shut down temporarily in the past year, its survey found. The government said it was determined to ensure "every mother and baby gets the highest quality care". A poll of 83 heads of midwifery at NHS trusts found there had been a rise in the number of units that had closed their doors, with 33% having closed the previous year. The RCM said budget cuts were also affecting services, with midwives struggling to cope with a rising birth rate and increasingly complex births. [...] But he added that rising numbers of complex pregnancies were also putting pressure on other UK countries. [...] The RCM says there is a shortage of 2,600 full-time midwives. NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

The Complete Skinny on Obesity - YouTube
chronic disease are 75% of health care expenditure in western world & developing world! developing countries have bigger problem w obesity & metabolic syndrome than infections like cholera/tb // min13 (Structure of Sugar) fructose is equal 2 alcohol. glucose is metabolized by every organ in the body. even if you don't consume glucose, your body will make it. fructose can only metabolized by the liver. you are overloading your liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). fructose is a liver toxin (liver fat). fructose and alcohol is metabolized into fat! alcohol and fructose can be both nutrients, but they can also be addictive // min 20 Leptin resistance. Insulin turns sugars into fat. western diet (dietary composition, omnivore, fast & processed food) encourage body 2 up the production of insulin (sugar 2 fat) till the ceiling is reached (Pancreatitis -> diabetes). increased insulin response (from diet composition) blocks leptin-to-brain signal (feeling of full) &is addictive over time
