However, the head of Scotland's food watchdog said he believed there was a growing consensus in public and political opinion that a "tipping point" was being reached in the battle against obesity, and that a failure to reverse the crisis would eventually "cripple the NHS". In search of surrogates, foreign couples descend on Ukraine - BBC News
Foreign couples have been coming to this corner of Europe in droves since 2015, when surrogacy hotspots in Asia began closing their industries one-by-one, amid reports of exploitation. Barred from India, Nepal and Thailand, they turned to Ukraine, one of the few places left where surrogacy can still be arranged at a fraction of what it costs in the US.

"We have so many childless couples coming to our country - it's like a conveyor belt," says Ana, who asked for her identity to be protected.

When she was 21, and after some years of hotel work, Ana finally decided to become a surrogate. By then she had a daughter and realised she was eligible. Under Ukrainian law, a surrogate must have a child of their own before carrying someone else's. If you have your own child, you are less likely to become attached to the one you must give away, those who recruit the women say. [...] Europe's capital of surrogacy
Demand for surrogacy in Ukraine "has increased probably 1000% in the last two years alone," says Sam Everingham of Families Through Surrogacy, a Sydney-based charity that advises would-be parents.

The country, he adds, "has found itself almost accidentally as one of the handful of nation states" which allow surrogacy tourism.

Funding the NHS: Is it finally time for a new approach? - BBC News
A ring-fenced tax for health and social care has been resisted in the past by the Treasury. Such a policy is known by economists as hypothecation. Opponents, including Treasury mandarins, believe it ties the hands of chancellors.

But, intriguingly, a former top civil servant at the Treasury, Sir Nick Macpherson, has come out in favour of a ring-fenced tax which is renewed every five years.

Finance trumps patients at every level – UK healthcare needs an inquiry | Aseem Malhotra | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
tl;dr Diet & Lifestyle changes of the nation in the short-, medium- and long-term term can help (substantially) save the NHS. // A full public inquiry on the scale of Chilcot into the Iraq war may ultimately be required to overhaul a system where at every level financial interest continues to trump what’s best for patients – not only to improve the quality of care, but to restore trust in medical research. Until then, NHS England, the BMA and the Department of Health must make it a national priority to emphasise to patients that less medicine and healthier lifestyles are the most important solutions to sustaining the NHS. // statistics use in medical research and patient selection and reporting issue. absolute risk v % of all patients. // Such statistical and health illiteracy, far from being the exception, is actually the norm. The majority of healthcare professionals seem unable to understand medical literature. Responding to the study, Stephen Evans, professor of pharmacoepidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “Many observational studies have found adverse effects associated with PPIs.

How your blood may predict your future health | Inequality | The Guardian
New research into bloodstream ‘biomarkers’ aims to unlock the full impact of social status on people’s lifetime health outcomes. The key is exposure to stress - quantitated self. making decisions on your own when presented w data? in case of the weight scale, never worked. why will it now? its just more medicalisation - door open for big pharma so people pop pills. vs inconvenience of changing diet lifestyle and learning something new like cooking and meditation. // &! Deprivation and Poverty Stress: The analysis suggested people in lower socioeconomic groups have a demonstrably longer exposure to chronic inflammation – with all its knock-on impacts on long-term health – even once the team corrected for the “usual suspects” of health inequality, including diet and smoking. There’s clearly something else at work. (inequality = health inequality)

NHS future precarious, says regulator - BBC News
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) says the health system is "straining at the seams" and faces a "precarious" future.
The England's regulator's annual report raised concerns about staff shortages, rising demand and the number of patients with preventable illnesses. It said so far the quality of NHS and council care has been maintained but warned standards were likely to drop. //>> GPs not focused to reverse diet lifestyle diesease. // "We are going to see a fall in the quality of services that are offered to people and that may mean that the safety of some people is compromised,"

Global cost of obesity-related illness to hit $1.2tn a year from 2025 | Society | The Guardian
The cost of treating ill health caused by obesity around the world will top $1.2tn every year from 2025 unless more is done to check the rapidly worsening epidemic, according to new expert estimates. Obesity and smoking are the two main drivers behind the soaring numbers of cancers, heart attacks, strokes and diabetes worldwide, grouped together officially as non-communicable diseases. They are the biggest killers of the modern world.

At last, we seem to be awakening from the bad dream of “tick-box medicine”
Doctors allowed themselves to be reduced to automatons. [...] NICE has recently changed the rubric that prefaces its guidelines, stressing that they are not mandatory and that they must be tailored to each individual patient. This would once simply have been good practice. That it has become necessary for NICE to spell it out shows just how far the profession has been degraded by the tick-box culture. [...] reduced to automatons, and their patients to pill-swallowing machines.

Chronic ill health among working age population poses 'unsustainable drain' on NHS | HeraldScotland
Currently 39 per cent of the working age population in Scotland has at least one long-term condition, but that is forecast to surge as the population ages and Scotland grapples with the fallout of an obesity epidemic.

Prof MacDonald said a failure to prevent and manage long-term conditions properly would be catastrophic as pension age increases to 68 or more.

Get up, stand up: including exercise in everyday life healthier than gym, says study | Society | The Guardian
Incorporating physical activity into our everyday lives, from taking the stairs to holding “walkaround” meetings in the office, is more likely to protect us from heart disease and an early death than buying a gym membership, according to the author of a major new global study.

Tax the rich more to help the poor, say NHS chiefs | Scotland | The Times & The Sunday Times
Hundreds of healthcare professionals in Scotland have insisted that the rich should pay more income tax.

The unprecedented move by the Faculty of Public Health in Scotland comes weeks after the SNP’s programme for government opened the door to the possibility of income tax rises. NHS 'sleepwalking into stroke crisis' unless more funding found for research into prevention (From HeraldScotland)
A report, by the Stroke Association and carried out at Queen Mary University of London and London School of Economics, estimates that a £10 million investment in research into interventions such as blood pressure management, treatments for atrial fibrillation which increases the risk of stroke, and treatments to prevent haemorrhagic stroke - the deadliest type - would cut by 114,000 the number of people living with a stroke in UK by 2035.

NHS Scotland T2Diabetes cost 10% of budget // evidence has been known for a decade by now! thoe ppl who treated t2d have been called quacks by "everything in moderation" - the evidence based medicine hubbub. // but the main reason for the low recording is probably that few patients are attempting or achieving remission. - GPs don't have time to worry about patient adherence and some do not want to change and rather take pills (intrinsic motivation, health motivated). / salt sugar fat // &! http://www.ndtv.com/food/controlling-your-weight-may-help-reverse-diabetes-5-foods-that-diabetes-patients-must-include-in-the-1750177 &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-41279050 &! http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/patients-at-highest-risk-of-type-2-diabetes-should-go-on-intensive-lifestyle-programme-nice-guidance_uk_59baa132e4b02da0e13fd6bf &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-40123846 &! https://www.nice.org.uk/news/article/more-than-a-million-people-should-be-offered-lifestyle-tips-as-a-way-to-avoid-type-2-diabetes &! https://soundcloud.com/bmjpodcasts/diabetes-remission-treating-blood-glucose-when-the-disease-process-is-to-do-with-body-fat
