Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News

Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.

It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.

The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.

That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Crippling debt ‘linked to depression’ - BBC News
People with mental health issues are three-and-a-half times more likely to be in problem debt than those without such conditions, analysis suggests.

This link was even stronger for certain conditions such as bipolar disorder and depression, the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute said.

It said those with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) were six times more likely to have serious money troubles.

It is leading calls for greater protection for those in this situation.

The institute analysed data from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, which had responses from 7,500 people in England.

This revealed an estimated 1.5 million people were struggling with mental health and debt issues at the same time.

Police custody deaths hit 10-year high, with experts citing austerity | UK news | The Guardian
Police custody deaths have hit their highest level in a decade with police, campaigners and experts warning that austerity and a crisis in mental health services have driven the figure up.

A total of 23 people died in or after detention in 2017-18, according to official figures released by the police watchdog, up from 14 people the previous year.

More than half had mental health problems, according to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who said the conditions included psychosis, depression and self-harm or suicidal tendencies. Eighteen people had drug and or alcohol issues.

Build it and they will come? Why Britain's 1960s cycling revolution flopped | Cities | The Guardian
Too easy to drive [ disincentivise driving, incentivise cycling ] The borough council’s cycle strategy – not updated since 2002 – conveys no doubt as to why cycle usage is so low: “Stevenage has a fast, high-capacity road system, which makes it easy to make journeys by car. Residents have largely been insulated from the effects of traffic growth and congestion and generally there is little incentive for people to use modes other than the private car … [The] propensity to cycle [appears to] depend on factors other than the existence of purpose-built facilities.”

Claxton was a regular user of the cycleways he had created. “I didn’t do my cycleways for cyclists,” he told an environmental magazine in 1977. “I did them for people.”

Alzheimer’s surge adds to burden on NHS of ageing population - The Scotsman
This marks a rise of 33.4 per cent on the same period last year and more than double the 257 deaths that occurred in the same three months in 2014. A further 936 deaths in Scotland were a result of dementia, the figures showed, up 16.9 per cent over the year – although this was said in part to be due to changes in the cause of death coding software.

Britain’s young suffer as austerity continues to take its toll | Letters | Business | The Guardian
It is governmental negligence when the poorest young citizens do not have enough money to heat a home or buy a healthy balanced diet. Universities report time and time again that cold homes increase rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, excess winter deaths and mental illness. Inadequate diets increase the risk of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Debt with insufficient income impacts on health indirectly through increased stress, depression and anxiety, and suboptimal coping behaviours – such as increased rates of smoking and drinking.

After the crash in 2008, the Queen asked: “Why did no one see it coming?” Ten years later, she might well ask the same question about the rise of early deaths among young people.

Sell high calorie foods in plain packaging to beat obesity, says Brain Prize winner | Science | The Guardian

Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, has overtaken heart disease as the leading cause of death in England and Wales, latest figures reveal.
Last year, more than 61,000 people died of dementia - 11.6% of all recorded deaths.
The Office for National Statistics says the change is largely due to an ageing population.
People are living for longer and deaths from some other causes, including heart disease, have gone down.
Also, doctors have got better at diagnosing dementia and the condition is now given more weight on death certificates.
