Google 'betrays patient trust' with DeepMind Health move | Technology | The Guardian
Now that Streams is a Google product itself, that promise appears to have been broken, says privacy researcher Julia Powles: “Making this about semantics is a sleight of hand. DeepMind said it would never connect Streams with Google. The whole Streams app is now a Google product. That is an atrocious breach of trust, for an already beleaguered product.”

In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

Pando: At what point is the convenience of technology outweighed by the constant stress?
Yesterday, I wrote about new proposals to allow the government to trawl the social media accounts of visa applicants before allowing or denying entry to the US.  Specifically, I wrote about my relief, as a visa-carrying foreign worker, at having deleted my social media accounts last year. For all the myriad reasons the government might declare me unworthy of living here -- particularly under President Trump -- at least an old dumb tweet won’t be one of them. Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

Google Just Open Sourced TensorFlow, Its Artificial Intelligence Engine | WIRED
It’s not selling access to its deep learning engine. It’s open sourcing that engine, freely sharing the underlying code with the world at large. This software is called TensorFlow, and in literally giving the technology away, Google believes it can accelerate the evolution of AI. Through open source, outsiders can help improve on Google’s technology and, yes, return these improvements back to Google. “What we’re hoping is that the community adopts this as a good way of expressing machine learning algorithms of lots of different types, and also contributes to building and improving [TensorFlow] in lots of different and interesting ways,” says Jeff Dean, one of Google’s most important engineers and a key player in the rise of its deep learning tech.

The truth is, we have no interest in protecting your privacy, and if you still believe that we do, then you are stupider than we thought, and believe me, we already thought you were pretty stupid. Apple's “Special Event” was underwhelming, but that's a good thing
I felt less bad for my younger, archiving self than I did for Apple. The parts of our lives we wanted instinctively to endure became ink leaked onto pulp, not files housed in silicon. Paper volumes we still house on oft-dusted bookshelves. It was the technology that Apple designed to usher us into the great, digital future that got thrown out – or, if the technology was lucky, encased inside a dust cover and forgotten about for decades. Apple, in time, learned not only to live with the disposability of digital architecture, but to profit from it... // [ the pendulum will swing back again, on a personal level, but for distribution, digital is so much better! SAP: Ehemaliger Mitarbeiter erhebt schwere Vorwürfe gegen SAP - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[...] [ $25m fuer sich zu fordern war dumm. Super naive. U.S. developing sanctions against China over cyberthefts - The Washington Post
[ double standard. probably know that they will be outed come time to have e-mailed trade secrets of other nations big companies to their own national companies, even if it is just for infrastructure or defense contract bids ] The White House is getting ready to issue "unprecedented economic sanctions" against Chinese companies and individuals "who have benefited from their government’s cybertheft of valuable U.S. trade secrets," says the Washington Post. But the Post doesn't explain what those sanctions would be, or why the U.S. is going after individual targets instead of the Chinese government itself. One thing that is clear: Chinese president Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the U.S. next month.

Twitter works just fine – but for investors, anything except total market domination is a disaster | Comment is free | The Guardian
Nothing better illustrates capitalism’s addiction to illogic than the mismatch between Twitter’s workability and its unpopularity with Wall Street [...] Any company that cannot demonstrate a clear route to monopolising its space, monetising its users’ data on a vast scale, is to be discarded, targeted for acquisition, consigned to perpetual dowdiness. [...] When I’ve pointed to Wikipedia, Apache or Linux as harbingers of a new, non-market, open source economics, one of the stock responses is: “now show us something more spectacular.” The problem is, these modest, functional and free products are already in their own way spectacular. Wikipedia is the biggest information product in the world; Apache runs half the world’s web servers; and Linux is the system of choice for at least a third of all servers (the computers that run businesses) and 97% of the world’s supercomputers.

Staff Exodus, Pressure From Microsoft, Apple Hit Google Now | Re/code
According to multiple sources, their initial vision of Now — as a mobile assistant tailored to particular users — works best living on the mobile operating system, not within search. Also, Google is a political place and search is Congress. Big, necessary, stodgy. [...] “‘Look, I’ve got a lot on my plate. Chrome and Android are my top priorities. Google Now is not on that. I can’t fight that battle for you.’” [...] Apple, for its part, looks prepared to launch a competitor to Now on Tap.
