No safe way to suntan, new NICE guidance warns - BBC News
There is no safe or healthy way to get a tan from sunlight, new guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has warned. The health watchdog's latest guidance also says an existing tan provides little protection against sun exposure. It recommends using at least factor 15 sun cream, with adults urged to use 6-8 teaspoons (35ml) per application. Benefits from building up vitamin D from the sun have to be balanced with the risks of skin cancer, it adds. Many adults in Britain have low levels of vitamin D and the guidance states that some exposure to sunlight can help to build this up. NICE also says it is not possible to get enough vitamin D by sitting next to a closed sunny window, or from sunlight between October and March in the UK. However, experts stopped short of recommending a specific amount of time people should stay out. //&! Hugh Jackman - bit.ly/1Q6wQvP

Folic acid to fortify flour 'would cut birth defects' - BBC News
"would cut" ... because eating your greens (and beans) and daily dozen (vs 5 a day) is too much to ask, too extreme. //>> New research on the human metabolism of folic acid suggests natural sources of folate are preferable - nutritionfacts.org/video/can-folic-acid-be-harmful/ - links to cancer! because folic acid is not naturally occurring. we are not rats (where initial recommendations are based on)! //&! VS. Worries that taking extra folic acid might increase the risk of cancer have been played down by a major study. - bbc.in/22fb5NE - Following Canadian research linking the vitamin with a small rise in cancer, the study in the Lancet journal looked at data from 50,000 people. It found no significant differences in those taking folic acid. [...] risk that folic acid supplementation could disguise anaemia symptoms in a small number of older people. //&! Vitamins and Supplements: An Evidence-Based Approach - YouTube
- correlation vs causation. vitamin/supplement takers seem to be more health conscious. making some better health decisions (supplements look good bc health conscious ppl take them). statistics and study/survey sometimes don't take that into account (fudging data), don't make that clear. disclose. especially studies funded by interest groups. - expression of cancer reduced (protective, decreased all mortality rate) w increased veg and fruit intake. - vitamins and supplements can not replace phytonutrients and fiber that come with fruit and veg intake. - differentiation between fat soluble and water soluble. - Vitamin A study discourages intake, on average harmful. - Supplementation for Sick Population: B-Complex together w Folic Acid doesn't help (reduce cancer & cardiac event, cardiovascular disease ... Folic Acid unequal Folate (plant source)). - 6% increase due to Multivitamin intake? - Take your RDA ideally from food and not big doses. - Vitamin D & Calcium & epigenetics.

Low Vitamin D Levels Linked to Disease in Two Big Studies - NYTimes.com
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is an important part of the immune system. Receptors for the vitamin and related enzymes are found throughout cells and tissues of the body, suggesting it may be vital to many physiological functions, said Dr. Oscar H. Franco, a professor of preventive medicine at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands and an author of one of the new studies, which appeared in the journal BMJ. “It has effects at the genetic level, and it affects cardiovascular health and bone health,” he said. “There are different hypotheses for the factors that vitamin D regulates, from genes to inflammation. That’s the reason vitamin D seems so promising.”
