Media Websites Battle Faltering Ad Revenue and Traffic
[lots more competition for people's attention] The trouble, the publishers say, is twofold. The web advertising business, always unpredictable, became more treacherous. And website traffic plateaued at many large sites, in some cases falling — a new and troubling experience after a decade of exuberant growth. Online publishers have faced numerous financial challenges in recent years, including automated advertising and ad-blocking tools. But now, there is a realization that something more profound has happened: The transition from an Internet of websites to an Internet of mobile apps and social platforms, and Facebook in particular, is no longer coming — it is here. [...] “How do I monetize [content]?” he asked. “Still not clear.” //&! bit.ly/1Sxbrdu - if buzzfeed is hurting, everyone else is screwed. //&! nyti.ms/1WzYfHE

CrazyRussianHacker, Plagiarist and DMCA abuser! #WTFU
.youtube.com/results?search_query=fair+use // .youtube.com/results?search_query=DMCA // So when I first made a video showing that CrazyRussianHackers idea about using dry ice for an air conditioner was basically suicidal, I really didnt think anything would come of it. Then recently he filed a DMCA takedown of my video. This resulted in a strike against my account and me losing access to certain features.

Now thats a special brand of idiot who makes a video about a suicidal way to chill the air, then files a baseless copyright takedown of the only warning about how dumb that idea is. Especially against a guy like me who has a history of fighting DMCA abuse! [ people have yet to be sued in court for DMCA abuse, it is a felony ]

Life and death in the App Store | The Verge
[ land grab and winner takes all environment, the long-tail is not what it was supposed to be promised by some ] 'the app store resembles now a lottery' [...] Today, profiting from the App Store most often requires a mix of in-app purchases, subscriptions, and advertising. There are now more than 1.5 million apps in the App Store (Android users have 1.6 million to choose from), but by 2014, the majority of Americans were downloading zero apps per month. Pando: Hot or Not founder responds to Nancy Jo Sales' new book: "I don’t think we invented human nature"
Nearly every tweet I’ve read about Nancy Jo Sales’ new book “American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers” has been some variation of “I’m scared to read this.” Indeed by page 20, I started making plans to move to an Amish village by the time my daughter turns 12. The deeper I read, the more I was impressed by many of the young women Sales interviewed, and the more sorry I felt that we've given them this world.  [...] Sales also describes how young girls worship Kim Kardashian and derive their self worth from how many likes they get on Instagram.

Age of Abundance: How the Content Explosion will Invert the Media Industry | Original | REDEF
Over the past century, technological advancements have massively reduced the cost and time needed to create and circulate content. Though this has liberated artists, consumers are now drowning in a virtually infinite supply of things to watch, listen to and read. The answer to a world where attention is the key constraint, not capital or distribution, isn’t Big Media – it’s the Influencer Curator.

Fine Brothers spark fury with YouTube trademark attempt - BBC News
[ protecting an entertainment format - old school TV. YT goes TV. ] 2015 applied to trademark terms "Kids React", "Adults React" & "Celebrities React", as well as the word "react" itself, which could be used to form new variations of the format. [...] a licensing scheme called React World, which they said would let other video-makers use the "react" title and assets such as their graphics and music. But the plan was negatively received by the YouTube community because so many people already make similar reaction-based videos online, using the word "react" in the title. "They had a bunch of trademarks already and nobody minded," said Jon, a YouTuber from Many A True Nerd. "But the moment they got to just the word 'react', it was just too commonly used. "People aren't sure whether they will fall foul of the trademark. "As creators, we have sympathy that you want to protect your content from being stolen - but in this case it's too far," he told the BBC. & bit.ly/1JWHDXd backing-off

Adele reveals why she doesn't like streaming - BBC Newsbeat
[ Taylor Swift & those who have pull, can afford to do it ] Adele has revealed why she's decided not to allow fans to stream her new album, 25, on services like Spotify and Apple Music. "I don't use streaming. I download [music], and I buy a physical [copy]." "It's a bit disposable, streaming," she told Time magazine. "I believe music should be an event." Adele's 25 has sold more than two million copies in the UK since it was released on 20 November. "I know that streaming music is the future, but it's not the only way to consume music," she said. "I can't pledge allegiance to something that I don't know how I feel about yet." The 27-year-old's previous two albums, 19 and 21, are currently available to stream.

Google offers YouTube copyright support - BBC News
YouTube owner Google says it will help fund up to $1m (£650,000) in legal fees for some content creators who have received copyright takedown notices. It will step in if it feels their material is considered to be fair use. However the firm admitted that only a handful of people have been chosen to benefit from this support. Copyright holders are able to make requests to Google - or other sites - to take down content under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). However there are exceptions to the law, which vary around the world but can include the use of other material for the purposes of commentary and parody. If a small portion of somebody else's work is used in this context, or in news reporting or for teaching purposes in the US, it can be exempt from copyright legislation.

Spotify Shrinks Music Download Sales, Fights Piracy – Study | Re/code
Is Spotify shrinking the music business, by giving people a good reason not to buy music anymore? Or is Spotify helping the music business, by giving people a good reason not to steal music anymore? Yes! That’s the conclusion from a new study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research this month. [...] The nice thing about the study is that it manages to bolster both Spotify’s main argument to the music industry for the past few years — if you don’t let us distribute your music, and get some money for it, the pirates will do it and you’ll get none — and the music labels’ primary worry about streaming — there’s no way we’re going to sell enough subscriptions to replace albums and single-track sales!

Google Plans to Introduce Android Laptops, Replacing Chrome as OS | Re/code
Scale Google loves scale. It shutters products with user numbers that many companies would kill for (remember Reader?) because they don’t reach the billion-plus of its flagships. Chrome primarily lives on Chromebook devices. Gartner estimates Google will ship 7.9 million devices this year. Android, Google recently announced, crossed 1.4 billion users. Very different scale. Despite some traction, Chromebooks are still a tiny slice of the market, and Google has faced difficulty corralling developers to build apps for it. It hasn’t had the same problem with Android. [...] Google has manically reiterated that it does, in fact, have a cohesive plan for mobile. A chief Android distinction from Chrome is that it is built for mobile behavior. A vote for Android is, in some ways, a tacit admission that Google must devote its attention to the devices on which it lives.

Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

Thrillist and JackThreads Raise $54 Million, Split Into Separate Companies | Re/code
In an interview with Re/code on Tuesday, Lerer revealed that Thrillist, his lifestyle media business for dudes, and JackThreads, his e-commerce site for young guys, are splitting into separate entities, with a new CEO taking over at JackThreads. Lerer positioned the arrangement as a way for the businesses to focus solely on what they do best and allocate investment dollars as they see fit. “At a certain point, these businesses have each become living, breathing creatures, and to share a source of food is not the most productive,” he said.

Major Executive Shake-Up at Yahoo Media Unit Amid Company-Wide Talent Turmoil (Update) | Re/code
There have been a lot of changes in the media unit too, including some layoffs and other adjustments. Under Savitt and with the support of Mayer, Yahoo has sought to create a content destination site, with elaborate online magazines and big-name hires like Katie Couric and David Pogue. Still, the lack of traction in reviving its core business, especially advertising, has begun to take its toll. And, no surprise, there are many more as other Silicon Valley companies — such as Twitter, Facebook and others — have grabbed the cream of the crop at Yahoo of late, as its core business has continued to suffer. I have spent the last several weeks compiling a long list of the leavings, so more to come.

Apple's “Special Event” was underwhelming, but that's a good thing
I felt less bad for my younger, archiving self than I did for Apple. The parts of our lives we wanted instinctively to endure became ink leaked onto pulp, not files housed in silicon. Paper volumes we still house on oft-dusted bookshelves. It was the technology that Apple designed to usher us into the great, digital future that got thrown out – or, if the technology was lucky, encased inside a dust cover and forgotten about for decades. Apple, in time, learned not only to live with the disposability of digital architecture, but to profit from it... // [ the pendulum will swing back again, on a personal level, but for distribution, digital is so much better! And remember the possibility of data apocalypse ]

AOL Confirms It Is Buying Millennial Media In $238M Deal To Expand In Mobile Ads | TechCrunch
For Millennial’s part, while the company — one of the older mobile ad firms — had developed an extensive advertising network, some critics believed that the company had not really kept up with bigger innovations in ad tech. When it went public in 2012, the company popped with an eye-watering valuation of $2 billion, a far cry from its sub-$300 million valuation today. In that regard, coming together with a company like AOL to wrap more ad tech around its network also makes some sense. The mobile ad market is still a relatively small part of the wider digital ad industry, but with consumers’ big swing to using smartphones and tablets as their sole computing devices, this is rapidly changing, with a lot of that move being fuelled by innovations in ad tech.

Twitter works just fine – but for investors, anything except total market domination is a disaster | Comment is free | The Guardian
Nothing better illustrates capitalism’s addiction to illogic than the mismatch between Twitter’s workability and its unpopularity with Wall Street [...] Any company that cannot demonstrate a clear route to monopolising its space, monetising its users’ data on a vast scale, is to be discarded, targeted for acquisition, consigned to perpetual dowdiness. [...] When I’ve pointed to Wikipedia, Apache or Linux as harbingers of a new, non-market, open source economics, one of the stock responses is: “now show us something more spectacular.” The problem is, these modest, functional and free products are already in their own way spectacular. Wikipedia is the biggest information product in the world; Apache runs half the world’s web servers; and Linux is the system of choice for at least a third of all servers (the computers that run businesses) and 97% of the world’s supercomputers.
