Mental health: 10 charts on the scale of the problem - BBC News
october 2017 by asterisk2a
Over 10 years NHS prescriped 100% more anti-depressants. Medicalised Society. Parked indefinetly on management medication no healing. Left behind. // But so too is the fact prescribing patterns have changed. Doctors are much more likely to keep people on drugs for longer with evidence suggesting it is a more effective way of treating patients.
But as common as antidepressants are, the fact remains the majority of people with mental illness report they are not getting help.
Only one in three of those polled said they were receiving treatment, according to NHS Digital.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
september 2017 by asterisk2a
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Neoliberalism has conned us into fighting climate change as individuals | Martin Lukacs | Environment | The Guardian
july 2017 by asterisk2a
Neoliberalism has taken this internalized self-blame and turbocharged it. It tells you that you should not merely feel guilt and shame if you can’t secure a good job, are deep in debt, and are too stressed or overworked for time with friends. You are now also responsible for bearing the burden of potential ecological collapse.

Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
july 2017 by asterisk2a
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

First fall in consumer spending for almost 4 years
june 2017 by asterisk2a
Consumer spending has fallen on an annual basis for the first time in almost four years [...] Adjusting for inflation, real consumer spending by British consumers on Visa debit, credit and prepaid cards in May was 0.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year. Visa said that seasonally adjusted spending was 1.8 per cent lower in May compared to April. The figures are unofficial, but suggest that sluggish economic growth continued in the second quarter, after a first quarter in which the UK grew at the slowest rate in the G7. [...] household consumption, which accounts for more than 60 per cent of the economy. Here's Why A Slowdown In Earnings For The Top 1% Is A Problem For The UK - BuzzFeed News
march 2017 by asterisk2a
“Fifteen years without a pay rise,” IFS director Paul Johnson said. “I’m rather lost for superlatives. This is completely unprecedented.” [...] If the top earners make less, the government brings in less tax revenue; it’s as simple as that. And with Brexit looming, the exchequer needs to raise all the funds it can.

Robert Skidelsky: 'Why don't more people aspire to living a good life?' | From the Observer | The Guardian

What went wrong?
The Thatcher years created a great regression in that belief, I think. We were getting there and then it was reversed. Though it was wicked and unrealisable, the failure of communism had a profound effect. There suddenly seemed no alternative to money as a way of organising society.

Does The Myth of Meritocracy show us how to alleviate inequality?
july 2016 by asterisk2a
No debate about social mobility is complete without reference to the supposedly halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s. The class fluidity of those decades, however, was not the result of professions becoming more meritocratic. It was caused by an unprecedented rise in the number of middle-class jobs: there was more room at the top. [...] Bloodworth writes that 21st-century society is characterised by a dwindling of professional jobs and more people slipping downwards: there is “more room at the bottom”. [...] Globalisation has created what the economist Robert H Frank calls “winner-takes-all” markets

UK consumes far less than a decade ago – 'peak stuff' or something else? | Business | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
From crops to energy and metals, average material consumption fell from 15 tonnes in 2001 to just over 10 tonnes in 2013 [...] UK households have also abandoned buying many resource-intensive goods common in the recent past – such as metal-heavy video recorders and hi-fi systems, vinyl records, CDs and books – as they shift to digital consumption. [...] The figures will spark fresh speculation that Britain and other developed economies have hit ‘peak stuff’, although some critics pour scorn on the quality of the ONS’s environmental accounts. In January, Ikea said the appetite of western consumers for home furnishings had reached its peak and consumption of many familiar goods was at its limit. Household spending on physical goods, including furnishings, clothing, cars and gadgets, decreased between 2002/03 and 2014, [...] Households now spend more on services than physical goods, he said. [...] [ saturation in some markets but we are not living in peak stuff ]

More Evidence Supporting the House of Debt | House of Debt
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Many have argued that we overstate the importance of housing and household debt in explaining the Great Recession and weak recovery. They point to the banking crisis, policy uncertainty, or excessive regulation as equally or even more important. The data released today by the BEA show pretty clearly that the arguments we make in House of Debt remain relevant for thinking about economic weakness today. In our view, the explanation we provide is the most consistent with the striking difference in consumption across states. // From Comments: Without real median income rising you can’t grow in an economy based on debt expansion

Nasty Gal Layoffs Hit 10 Percent of Staff | Re/code
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Online fashion retailer Nasty Gal has laid off 10 percent of its staff, as the purveyor of edgy women’s clothing cuts costs amid an uncertain financing and retail environment. CEO Sheree Waterson told the company in an email that the cuts were necessary as the “market in which we operate is changing, both in retail broadly and apparel specifically.” Nineteen employees across several departments were let go. Nasty Gal also laid off some staff in 2014. The layoffs underscore the difficulty mature e-commerce startups can encounter as they transition from being a hot new brand to the long slog of building a more traditional retail business. In short, building a retail brand is really hard and technology can only afford you so many shortcuts along the way. Online beauty brand BirchBox announced layoffs of 15 percent of its staff last week, as startups in e-commerce tighten belts as investors become more wary of unprofitable growth.

Apple, Samsung and Sony face child labour claims - BBC News
january 2016 by asterisk2a
Human rights organisation Amnesty has accused Apple, Samsung and Sony, among others, of failing to do basic checks to ensure minerals used in their products are not mined by children. [...] "It is a major paradox of the digital era that some of the world's richest, most innovative companies are able to market incredibly sophisticated devices without being required to show where they source raw materials for their components," said executive director of Afrewatch (Africa Resources Watch) Emmanuel Umpula. "The abuses in mines remain out of sight and out of mind because in today's global marketplace, consumers have no idea about the conditions at the mine, factory and assembly line. We found that traders are buying cobalt without asking questions about how and where it was mined."

Conservatives should blame capitalism for the 'war on Christmas' | Steven W Thrasher | Opinion | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
consumption as with dieting, is not consistent. [...] The first battles of this war on Christmas are usually fought right after (and increasingly on) Thanksgiving Day, as Black Friday shoppers are whipped into a frenzy of buying garbage products we don’t need, built in ways that maim and kill the people who make them and produced by means that slowly kill us all.

Ignoring watersheds, ignoring climate change: flooded by our ignorance | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian

Storm Desmond’s floods expose the utter madness of government policies, both in the hills and at the Paris talks. It’s as if it had come to remind us of what’s at stake. The roof is being fixed but beware the house crashing beneath it | Business | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Consumer spending is driving economic growth but household debt and the house price-income ratio is at a record high. Be afraid [...] It is worth recalling that when Osborne became chancellor five and a half years ago that he had two big objectives. The first was to repair the hole in the public finances, which is still very much a work in progress. The other was to shift the centre of gravity of the economy back towards making things for export. This remains a pipedream. [...] Despite the welcome pickup in business investment, the main driver of growth has been consumer spending, which has been boosted by low interest rates, the fall in inflation caused by lower oil prices, and a modest acceleration in earnings. [...] “not the ideal shape for the recovery” and it can say that again. The current recovery looks like all the previous recoveries. [...] “Fast-rising household debt is needed to maintain a reasonable rate of growth in consumers’ spending and GDP in a world of austerity ...

Grand Designs - South Yorkshire, 2013 - All 4
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Kevin McCloud reveals the designs which have reinvented the suburbs // [the new house] it's energy can start a new context [...] can transform an area. // suburbs have the freedom to design [...] can always revisit and redesign/build new to reflect time and thought // housing is ever more uniform in UK, no supply (no choice) forces demand to accept what is on offer; status quo is one big developer, all houses uniform because its cheaper that way for the developer to build and extract most profit out of contract (lowest bidder symptom), get couple of developers for a plot and you get some difference but still sameness (garden variety) [REFLECTIVE OF SOCIETY AND CAPITALISM AT LARGE, NO INDIVIDUALISM/INDIVIDUALITY. STATUS ANXIETY: JUST ABOUT THE PRICE TAG AND BRAND]. get 100s of developers and you get Progressive new suburb that reflects time, culture, ideas, thought, mood, principles, ... making a place! // << Nasty Party has no guts. Why do people act the way they do on Black Friday? - BBC News
november 2015 by asterisk2a
We are not able to process as much information if we are in an emotional, adrenaline-driven environment Kate Nightingale, Customer psychologist [...] This can lead to frustration when people miss out on what they wanted to buy. A study in the US suggested that people who commit acts of "consumer misbehaviour" were more likely to have carefully planned their Black Friday shopping trips. Researchers concluded that some people were reacting badly to being blocked from their goals.

Why I'm buying nothing for a year – no clothes, no holidays, no coffee ... | Money | The Guardian
november 2015 by asterisk2a
I’m not the first person to attempt this. There is a growing movement of people who are turning their back on consumerism and purchasing possessions in favour of buying experiences and travelling the world. In the US, the Minimalists have encouraged people to live with less, while in Canada Cait Flanders – who blogs at Blonde on a Budget – transformed her finances with a shopping ban. In the UK, Kath Kelly lived on just £1 a day for a year in order to buy her brother a lavish wedding gift.

Nickel in Ohrringen: Jeder sechste Stecker enthält zu viel - SPIEGEL ONLINE
november 2015 by asterisk2a
[ German livestock industry is using last stand-antibitoics, without oversight, regulation, accountability, transparency ] Geflügel: Antibiotika wirken immer häufiger nicht, weil Bakterien dagegen resistent werden.

november 2015 by asterisk2a
Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

Revealed: the dirty secret of the UK’s poultry industry | World news | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
17m birds slaughtered in UK alone each week. // " You are producing them more slowly." << That is how we talk about animal lives. & UK Regulator: "its the job of the industry to crack this problem." (neoliberal stance, please self-regulate yourself) [...] "It's a judgement call what we publish. [...] we don't want consumers to be mislead or confused" < that is out of the book of repeat messages from the food lobby. // TORIES, nasty party. Like Osborne tax credit cut is a "judgement call" in his own words in-front of select committee. // http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=chicken // consumer ask for those "standards" because they ask for lower prices. and unregulated capitalism will short shrift to make more profit no matter what. even if it is just a penny. // Lack of compassion. Empathy. Also reflective towards our fellow human beings.

Cornel West and Richard Wolff talk about Capitalism and White Supremacy - YouTube
october 2015 by asterisk2a
individualism tends to capitalism (each their own coloured widget) vs individuality of the individual. don't mistake the one for the other and you can't achieve the same happiness and well-being with just individualism because it is also based on constant consumption. // what people leave out of socialism and the pundits decry over it. is democracy. democratic socialism. // Plutocracy is undercutting its ability to survive! Problem, the system will take us down with it. // We got ecological catastrophe on our doorstep. Nuclear catastrophe. And Capitalisms catastrophe. //&! Ceased all power and rendered the citizen powerless. This is no capitalistic democracy. This is crony capitalism. - Chris Hedges June 8, 2015 - youtu.be/iA41ggsdeXE - capitalism has no internal constraints. remove external constraints & it will see & use everything (private free market enterprise) as replaceable & commodity w a price (even the planet): the environment, workers health. &! non-violent revolution!

october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ case of isolation as with people on Social Media and B, C, D Celebrity types ] [...] //&! Nietzsche on: The Superman youtu.be/bxiKqA-u8y4 - "carving their own path [] suffering as a neccesary component of good things. Mindfulness has huge health potential – but McMindfulness is no panacea | Jon Kabat-Zinn | Comment is free | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ you own only your thoughts, emotions and health (fitness) ] [ you have to function ] Mindfulness is often misunderstood – so let us be clear about what we are encouraging. In essence, mindfulness – being about attention, awareness, relationality, and caring – is a universal human capacity akin to our capacity for language acquisition. It is a way of being in wise and purposeful relationship with one’s experience, both inwardly and outwardly, with oneself and with others. Thus there is an intrinsic social dimension to its cultivation as well. It usually involves cultivating familiarity and intimacy with aspects of everyday experience that we often take for granted.

Die Qual der Wahl: Warum uns Entscheidungen so schwer fallen - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2015 by asterisk2a

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Kolumne ǀ Vier Jahre nach Occupy — der Freitag
october 2015 by asterisk2a
