MLK's vehement condemnations of US militarism are more relevant than ever | Glenn Greenwald | Opinion | The Guardian On April 4, 1967, speaking at Riverside Church, MLK called the US Government "the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today", and the leading exponent of "the deadly Western arrogance that has poisoned the international atmosphere for so long"
In response to that beautiful speech, the NYT Editorial Page - headlined "Dr. King's Error" - condemned MLK for “slandering” the US by comparing it to evil regimes & falsely linking foreign militarism to domestic inequities

Today we know beyond doubt, and with scientific statistics rather than just anecdote, that this is true, and the question immediately arises: what caused it?

‘Antibiotic apocalypse’: doctors sound alarm over drug resistance | Society | The Guardian
“In the Ganges during pilgrimage season, there are levels of antibiotics in the river that we try to achieve in the bloodstream of patients,” says Davies. “That is very, very disturbing.” The creation of these soups of antibiotic-laden waters and banks of drug-soaked soils is ideal for the development of “superbugs”. Rare strains that are resistant to antibiotics start to thrive in farm animals that are raised in these artificial environments and emerge as highly potent infectious agents that then spread across the planet with startling speed. Examples of these include tuberculosis, which was once easily treated but which, in its modern multi-drug-resistant form, known as MDR-TB, now claims the lives of 190,000 people a year. &!

Analysis: a year in health - supply and demand | Holyrood Magazine
stop increasing general taxation. increase tax on causes. Verursacherprinzip. // Calls for a similarly tough approach on obesity have not yet been rewarded with a strategy, despite one being due last year and Scotland’s obesity rates amongst the highest in the world, even higher than in the rest of the UK.

Could the protracted legal wrangling with the drinks industry have tempered the Scottish Government’s appetite for imposing tough restrictions on food manufacturers and supermarkets? It will be clearer when the obesity and diet strategy emerges in the winter. [...] One long-awaited strategy which did see the light of day was the new mental health strategy, launched by Maureen Watt in March, but the minister may well have been disappointed in the response.

The document “lacks the ambition and investment that Scotland deserves” said the Scottish Association for Mental Health’s chief executive, Billy Watson.

The question, as with the rest of NHS Scotland’s challenges, is how would it be paid for?

How the humble potato fuelled the rise of liberal capitalism
Enlightened eating

Today’s somewhat uneasy marriage of public health and individual choice is the result of new ideas that emerged during the Enlightenment. During the 18th century, states across Europe began to rethink the bases of national wealth and strength. At the heart of these new ideas was a new appreciation of what we would now call public health. Whereas in earlier centuries rulers wished to prevent famines that might cause public unrest, in the 18th century, politicians became increasingly convinced that national strength and economic prowess required more than an obedient population disinclined to riot.

There's a science to making addictive food, a practice that convinces us to eat food that's bad for us because it tastes so good. -

Salmon farming in crisis: 'We are seeing a chemical arms race in the seas' | Environment | The Guardian
As a result of the lice infestations, the global price of salmon has soared, and world production fallen. Earlier this year freedom of information [FoI] requests of the Scottish government showed that 45 lochs had been badly polluted by the antibiotics and pesticides used to control lice – and that more and more toxic chemicals were being used.

Sweet Brexit: what sugar tells us about Britain’s future outside the EU | Business | The Guardian
Not only has sugar beet been an unusually reliable source of income for 3,500 of Britain’s arable farmers, but its broad green leaves are an important rotational crop in between soil-sapping wheat. If they are forced to compete head-on with what the NFU regards as artificially subsidised cane sugar from producers places in places such as Brazil and Thailand, it fears the economics of an industry supporting 9,600 jobs will unravel. The NFU accuses many cane-producing countries of dumping exports at prices below their true cost of production because governments offer various complicated farm subsidies. But some of these claims, particularly in Brazil, are disputed.
