Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

But the most striking quality of her on-air performance is that when Kellyanne Conway is done talking you know less than when you started. It's not the way she deflects, or lies. These are normal arts. It's that her gift is for subtracting from a viewer's knowledge. [...] If she cannot reliably represent Trump's thinking — AND she is a fog machine — there is no journalistic rationale for having her on TV.

Welfare to work programme failing disabled and ill jobseekers, say charities | Politics | The Guardian
Government urged to overhaul Work Programme and refocus on offering support to mentally ill people instead of putting pressure on them to find jobs [...] Companies delivering the >> Work Programme << admitted it had been hard to find employment for many jobseekers in this category and more investment was needed to prepare them to move off benefits and into work. [...] A performance briefing by the ERSA, the trade body for Work Programme provider companies and charities, said: “It should be remembered that many of the jobseekers in this group will never have received intensive employment support before and are a considerable distance from the labour market. “Performance in this group is rising, but it is going to take far longer to help these jobseekers back into employment.”

The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

What is Angela Ahrendts doing at Apple? - Fortune
“She motivates people. She inspires people. And she is the sort of person who wants to see things succeed as a team. It’s a rare quality.” [...] Ahrendts believes the key to the company’s future is not just marvelous products, but also engaging and energizing its nearly 100,000 employees, 60% of whom now work in retail division. “If you’re going to employ people anyway,” she says, “why not make them the differentiator? They’re not a commodity.” Now that there are 459 Apple stores in 15 countries, many people have their first Apple experience inside a store—a first impression that could forever tarnish the brand if it’s not good. “Burberry was about building a relationship,” she says. “But it was always about selling an amazing product that you would have forever. Apple is just a deeper relationship with a much broader constituency. Because it’s everybody.” // apple positioned itself just above everyone else it competes w [having a margin!], but not too far up to be douchy, off-setting

Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. American Apparel: at first arty and subversive, then it got creepy | Business | The Guardian
The US retailer broke new ground when it first hit the British high street, but its edginess and internet porn aesthetic ended up tarnishing its image [...] So many of the attributes that were once unique to American Apparel – unisex clothes, ethical production, athletics-influenced designs and brilliant basics – remain important trends in fashion today. But now that everybody else is offering these too, all that differentiates American Apparel is its tarnished reputation. // what would Seth Godin recommend? Wall Street demands more than niche. Why Has Apple Been Poaching Fashion Execs? | Fashion-Tech | BoF
Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

The Trouble With Reddit’s Content Policy Update | Re/code
It makes sense that hosting what the Southern Poverty Law Center described as the nexus of white supremacism on the Internet makes it difficult to “maintain a healthy and successful platform.” It’s obvious that Reddit doesn’t want to play host to racism and harassment. But the company doesn’t want to compromise too much on the “free speech” principles that hardcore Redditors, who are integral to the day-to-day functions of the site, obsess over. And Reddit also wants to cut ties with well-known hate centers like r/coontown that offend both advertisers and common decency. Reddit’s problem is that it wants to have it both ways. [ tl;dr Reddit wants to be more family friendly to be more attractive to advertisers, after all it has the pageviews to have advertising, what ever form, make it a sizeable revenue pillar. That should have long ago been communicated, still hasn't. ]

This is the Product Death Cycle. Why it happens, and how to break out of it

Aaron Levie (Box, SAAS, Enterprise) in one interview said they did not go ahead with some clients ("Saying NO, is maybe even more important than saying yes.") because they wanted so much change, which would make further update to the whole system a headache/more cost than the client would bring in. ] // "The Product Death Cycle is tricky because it’s driven by the right intentions: Listen to customers and build what they want. Former Reddit CEO alleges co-founder Alexis Ohanian fired Victoria Taylor, not Pao
via redd.it/3d6asv // nyti.ms/1gz0Iks // yishan - former CEO :: Alexis wasn’t some employee reporting to Pao, he was the Executive Chairman of the Board, i.e. Pao’s boss. He had different ideas for AMAs, he didn’t like Victoria’s role, and decided to fire her. Pao wasn’t able to do anything about it. In this case it shouldn’t have traveled upstream to her, it came from above her. Then when the hate-train started up against Pao, Alexis should have been out front and center saying very clearly “Ellen Pao did not make this decision, I did.” Instead, he just sat back and let her take the heat. That’s a stunning lack of leadership and an incredibly shitty thing to do. I actually asked that he be on the board when I joined; I used to respect Alexis Ohanian. Reddit's fate hangs in the balance as revolt against CEO makes waves | Technology | The Guardian
While more than 200,000 Redditors want Ellen Pao to resign, readers are jumping ship to budding competitor sites as top brass pushes to go mainstream [...] Redditors – as users are called – have accused the site of increasingly trying to monetize its popularity, and it appears their sentiments came to a head last Thursday, when Reddit’s popular director of talent, Victoria Taylor, was let go from her post. [...] a company torn between catering to commercial interests, and an obsession with giving voice to every possible perspective.
With its own Tweet gaffe, Twitter spectacularly demonstrates its own intrinsic Catch-22 | PandoDaily
[ specific use case, growth will be too slow, too anemic, for Wall Streets taste. Twitter is a utility, but not such a big one like FB. Oversold potential. But that is Catch-22 you have to sell hard and project. You basically work for Wall Street cottage industry to meet their estimates/forecasts. ] CEO Dick Costolo has tried a lot of new tricks to change that, catering more to logged-out users on Twitter’s home page, providing new users a readymade list of followers, partnering with Google to include tweets in search results. But today, Costolo said Twitter still needs to help users answer two questions, “Why should I use Twitter?” and “How do I use Twitter?” Incredibly, these questions plague Twitter nine years after the first tweet was ever sent, 17 months after Twitter’s IPO and nearly six months after the analyst day when Costolo pledged to turn things around. As a result, user growth remains disappointing. And now, it seems, so does revenue growth.
