The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. There will be more training for local Nato troops, more state-of-the-art hardware and more manoeuvres. [ ... + MH17 downing w Russian ground to air defense missile ]

Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians' - BBC News
At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists. It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November. The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says. Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare". Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also been accused of bombing rebel groups opposed to Mr Assad but backed by the West.

MH17 Ukraine disaster: Dutch Safety Board blames missile - BBC News
Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 crashed as a result of a Russian-made Buk missile, the Dutch Safety Board says. [...] The report does not say who fired the missile, but says airspace over eastern Ukraine should have been closed. [...] A separate Dutch-led criminal investigation is under way. [...] Mr Joustra also said there had been sufficient reason to close off Ukrainian airspace but Ukraine did not do that - and on the day of the crash, 160 flights flew over the area in question. [...] The board does not have the authority to apportion blame, under the rules governing international crash investigations. But speaking to reporters after the news conference, Mr Joustra said pro-Russian rebels were in charge of the area from where the missile that hit MH17 had been fired. ... Leslie Gelb, wrote Pentagon Papers. Which Ellsberg leaked (Whistleblower) - // Back in the days, national interests and force was expressed in war and seldomly in economic embargos (Napoleon tried that against British Empire) and there were economic skirmishes (oil/diesel, rubber) in the run-up to WW2 and the first couple of months before USA officially entered WW2. TODAY! National interests are only expressed in economic terms with trade embargoes, tariffs, trade deals and protectionism. Only little military skirmishes here and there and when, the nation tries to hide them from the publics eye (through rouge nations for hire army/special forces, a nations secret services supplying the underground arms trade that doesn't show up on its balance sheet or one of their nations manufacturers. Cash in as our desperate government inflates a new housing bubble - MoneyWeekMoneyWeek
So if prices are going up, people think that their situation is improving. Happy families make happy voters – and happy voters vote for the party in power. That’s why a massive mortgage subsidy scheme – Help to Buy – has been thrust upon us. And it seems to be working. Prices and sales are rising. [...] Trouble is, interest rates right now are at or near record lows. So mortgage servicing costs are only likely to rise. Ironically enough, it could be an economic recovery that does the damage: a recovery would result in higher rates, pushing mortgage payments up, and making many loans unaffordable. [...] As long as things look good come May 2015, it will happily ignore any potential collateral damage. And the scheme has had an almost-immediate impact. Formally launched in this year’s budget in April, it has already seen sales of new homes surge. The government now plans to expand it from next year.

ECB Decision ... 9th Feb 2012 | ZeroHedge
'transitory' nature of temporary non-standard measure; easing collateral demands (will now accept credit claims) to avoid credit crunch in Europe and help refinance banks (roll over of existing debt, new capital requirements (EBA) & risk aversion)

Simply proves that Europe is running out of any money good assets to pledge to the ECB as "collateral."

EZB in der Euro-Krise: Notenbanker in Not - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten - Wirtschaft

ECB Releases Collateral Schedule, Announces Will No Longer Accept Non-Euro Denominated Collateral | zero hedge
What is notable, however, is that the ECB has highlighted it will no longer accept non euro-denominated collateral after 2010. This is not good for countries which plan on syndicating dollar-denominated debt, as has been recently the case for Portugal, and, currently, Greece. Although in Greece's case we tend to think the country doesn't give a rat's behind about whether new issuance will be eligible, and is much more focused on just avoiding default.
