Trump signs order undoing Obama climate change policies - BBC News
Among the initiatives now rescinded is the Clean Power Plan, which required states to slash carbon emissions, to meet US commitments under the Paris accord. [...] The Trump administration says that scrapping the plan will put people to work and reduce America's reliance on imported fuel. [ people have to be put to work and taxed, because they have to rebuild parts of their country again and again after one extreme weather event after another. duh! ]

Obama climate initiative: Supreme Court calls halt - BBC News
this is akin to taking plaster to fix a crumbling high rise: limiting the emissions and putting cost on emissions for one industry, seen as heavies polluter in public eye ... while livestock industry is biggest +50% of them all. // what is needed is a carbon tax that also includes environmental and ecological cost (ie deforestation, water pollution from pig waste - livestock farming) and if we are already there, what about antibiotic-resistance? A Marschall Plan for the future of earth and its occupants. A future for us. // If and import doesn't have a carbon tax, tariffs have to be enacted on imports based on their damage to environment, ecology and carbon emissions. ... // economic damage & public health problems and health inequality in the future is deferred taxation for the next generation // Obama isn't bold enough. Meet the conservationists who believe that burning is good for wildlife | George Monbiot | Environment | The Guardian
Why is it that practices we recognise as destructive when we see them elsewhere in the world are judged “environmentally friendly” here? When we see land being burnt in Indonesia or Brazil, do we call it conservation, or do we call it destruction? Because it damages soil and hydrology, incinerates wildlife and simplifies ecosystems, destruction is the correct term. Burning on Dartmoor has the same impacts. It’s about as environmentally friendly as tipping bleach into a river. [...] I happen to believe that too much weight is given to sheep farming, and too little to wildlife. But where there are no tenants and no grazing, instead of using this as an opportunity for ecological restoration, the Exmoor authority is bringing in its own sheep to ensure that seedlings can’t grow and wildlife can’t recover. It’s utter madness.

Weather records: December was 'wettest month for UK' - BBC News
Storms propelled by the jet stream were mainly to blame, it says, with contributions from the El Nino weather phenomenon and man-made climate change. December was something of a freak month, it acknowledges. Climate change has raised UK temperatures by around 1C (1.8F) so far, so it will be many decades before this level of extreme weather becomes the new winter norm, it says. How Soviet pollution destroyed the Aral Sea - BBC News
[ one example. doesn't mean its the last one ] In October 1990 Western scientists confirmed the virtual disappearance of the Aral Sea in Soviet Central Asia, formerly the fourth largest inland sea in the world. The loss of sea water was the result of 60 years of intensive agriculture and pollution by the Soviet authorities. It is considered the biggest manmade loss of water in recorded history. The surrounding areas were devastated. Local fisherman watched as the shore gradually receded and fish stocks ran out. Local children fell victim to respiratory illnesses. Professor Denys Brunsden, of London's King's College, was one of the first Western scientists to visit the Aral Sea in 1990. //&!

Scotland's environment in 'serious trouble' - BBC News
The report is a follow up to the 2013 State Of Nature UK-wide report, which warned that 60% of 3,148 species studied had declined in past 50 years, and 31% had declined strongly. More than one in 10 of all species assessed were under threat of disappearing from the UK's shores altogether. [...] "As NGOs, we naturally asked ourselves 'What should be done about that?' "This report seeks to answer that question, and is based on a year's interactive research with a wide range of experts - both in wildlife ecology and in policy development and delivery. "The conclusion is not one of despair, but we must act with urgency to create a common course to save wildlife and the natural environment."

This Legendary Accounting Firm Just Ran the Numbers on Climate Change | Mother Jones
This accounting firm confirms what we've been saying for a while. We don't have to choose between the the environment and the economy. In fact, we can't afford NOT to stop climate change. [...] We're 20 years away from catastrophe, says PricewaterhouseCoopers. [...] Overall, PricewaterhouseCoopers paints a bleak picture of a world that's rapidly running out of time; the required effort to curb global emissions will continue to grow each year. "The timeline is also unforgiving. [...] The pressure will be on the world's governments to come up with a solution to this enormous challenge at the much-anticipated climate talks in Paris next year. A Coastal Paradise Confronts Its Watery Future : NPR
The neighborhood we're in was transformed from swamp to subdivision in the 1950s and 1960s, Fergus says, by dredging canals and then using the spoil to build up adjacent land. As a result, he says, many homes sit just a few feet above the water, along a coastline that is entirely man-made. And most other parts of the city also have been shaped by people. Almost every buildable lot is occupied. The beaches are covered with sand brought in from other areas. Even the city's nature park is on a man-made island. This sort of artificial landscape is common in this part of Florida, says Randy Parkinson, a coastal geologist who has spent years studying the challenges facing coastal cities. "When I first came up to this area from Miami, I tried to find a wetland that had not been altered by human activity," he says. "But there are no natural habitats left." That's a big problem in an era when the sea is rising and storms may be getting more powerful, Parkinson says: "I see a train wreck."
