Warning: your festive meal could be more damaging than a long-haul flight | George Monbiot | Opinion | The Guardian
http://www.theguardian.com/environment/meat-industry - A kilogramme of beef protein reared on a British hill farm can generate the equivalent of 643kg of carbon dioxide. A kilogramme of lamb protein produced in the same place can generate 749kg. One kilo of protein from either source, in other words, causes more greenhouse gas emissions than a passenger flying from London to New York. //&! http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jun/23/eat-less-red-meat-and-cycle-more-for-your-and-the-planets-health // [...] I’m not suggesting that you eat no meat or other animal products. Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Too much in Silicon Valley revolves around hyperspeed. Everything in the startup world is an emergency that needs to be solved in an all-nighter last night, if you allow it to be. Paris climate summit: UN negotiations 'need redesign' - BBC News
[ only bottom up works ... till the tide is big enough. same with health and fitness (which in part has to be about looking good/fit). self-esteem. ] The UN climate negotiations are heading for failure and need a major redesign if they are to succeed, scientists say. The pledges that individual countries are offering ahead of the Paris climate summit in December are too entrenched in self interest instead of being focussed on a common goal. The researchers say the science of cooperation is being ignored. Instead, they say the negotiations should focus on a common commitment on the global price of carbon. This means countries would agree on a uniform charge for carbon pollution, a scheme that would encourage polluters to reduce their emissions. The comments from researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, University of Maryland, US, and University of Cologne, in Germany, are published in the journal Nature. //&! bbc.in/1jYOUtz

NHS could be 'overwhelmed' by people with long-term medical conditions | Society | The Guardian
The soaring number of people with long-term medical conditions [chronic] is threatening to "overwhelm" the NHS [...] The challenges posed by patients with chronic medical conditions are so great that they represent the "healthcare equivalent to climate change" and must force the NHS to undertake a major rethink of how it cares for such patients, Dr Martin McShane says in an interview with the Guardian. [...] 70% of the NHS's £110bn budget – £77bn – as well as £10.9bn of the £15.5bn spent on social care in England, [...] NHS will not bridge the £30bn gap that it fears will have emerged by 2020 between its budget and the volume of care needed [...] a healthy patient costs the NHS about £288 a year, those with one long-term condition cost an estimated £783, those with two cost £1,521 // [More doesnt stop sink overflowing! stop the faucet of new chronically sick people. VW lost the plot. But that’s the danger when business lacks social moorings | Will Hutton | Comment is free | The Guardian
VW’s existential crisis has revealed the weaknesses inherent in western economies. Change must now happen [...] Despite a vast R and D budget, VW is far from a leader in the electrical car or hybrid market. Mr Winterkorn’s bonuses were based on his capacity to deliver production, jobs and profits: environmental sustainability or engaging with wider stakeholders did not get a look-in. [...] Capitalism, in short, may have boundless creative and innovative energy – but it also has boundless ways to go wrong. Intriguingly, recent work by a group of researchers at Harvard and the London Business School compared 90 American companies that took sustainability seriously with 90 who did not. Over 18 years the 90 committed to sustainability delivered annual financial returns 4.8% higher than the other 90.

Jeff Novick, RD, MS - Foods That Make You Thin - YouTube
- how can you fix something that people think is normal. that they are normal? you have to enlighten them, not shove it in their face, but they have to do the work themselves. then comes the intrinsic motivation with that and the step by step, incremental change ... that eventually compounds. change is hard. but hard things are worth it. rewarding so much more. its a individual private personal journey. //&! Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. Your improvement, over time, as a team, with shared tools, practices and beliefs is more important than individual pockets of brilliance. And more satisfying. [ anti-Rock Star dev philosophy ] [ book by Red Hat CEO Open Organization ]

Markets Hit Their Highest Levels Since Autumn - NYTimes.com
Wall Street was so bullish on Friday that it could have passed for Pamplona.
“The recession is dead,” Dean Maki, an economist at Barclays Capital, declared in a research note. “Long live the recovery.”
.
“No one really knows what kind of expansion we’ll have,” said Stu Schweitzer, global markets strategist at JPMorgan Private Bank. “One thing is clear: having cut costs to the bone, any increase in revenue should drop straight through to the bottom line of corporate America.”
.
“The behavior of the consumer is now the key thing to watch,”
