And acquisitions that help it make Yahoo! a mobile app company, relevant in the ecosystem (see Flurry acquisition, Brightroll, ... ad network/platform). Yahoos one disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much context to serve relevant - re-targeted ads to customers compared to FB, Twitter, Google. Same with Yahoo.com, its a bland/blunt page. In this light, incidentally, Satya Nadella's suggestion that Xbox is no longer core was as interesting as the end of 'Windows Everywhere' (which I discussed here). Microsoft has been working on adding computing to TV since before phones even had screens. But it turns out that it's the smartphone, not the TV, that's  the centre of the experience, and the TV is dumb glass just as the mobile network is a dumb pipe.

"Recent events show that with appropriate motivation anything can be hacked.Maybe everyone should stop and think about what it means for them" - Karpeles tweet would appear to be a reference to the recent celebrity hacking scandal which has seen nude photos of several female stars published online, with extortion request sent to prevent the release of others. (Ironically, many of these demands were for payment in bitcoin.) Even if it weren’t for Karpeles’ track record with alleged hacking attacks, the tweet would nevertheless have been ill-advised. As many other public figures have learned, any hint at victim-blaming in this instance is sure to draw criticism. Combine this with the fact that Karpeles’ nearly bankrupted thousands of people, and this comment warrants a special kind of outrage.

Build the Steak, not the Sizzle — The Entrepreneur’s Journey — Medium
You can market your ass off, but if your product sucks, you're dead. Your steak can sizzle and look crazy appetizing, but if it doesn’t taste any good, your customers aren’t coming back. In order to build a functional business that can take on a life of its own, your product just has to be real. You need to spend all of your time and energy on creating something that actually brings value to the people you're asking for money! I know it sounds obvious, but it’s something I can’t overstate. It's imperative.

Their complaints about the product echo mine, but after reading JLG's excellent piece, and thinking about it, I realize they didn't get what Apple is doing, and neither did I. I mean I did get it in a certain way, it's a start-over. Let's try to recreate the Mac, but do it based on what we have learned since 1984. Gassee explains why Jobs doesn't want Flash. No least-common-denominator software here, says Steve. We are not part of a cross-platform strategy. Okay, I thought about it, not sure I'd play it that way, but I understand why they are.

To be clear -- the future iPad has a keyboard and word processing software. They're going to roll out all the features of the Mac, one step at a time, bud this time they're going to avoid the pitfalls. Their ace in the hole -- if they don't like how something is going, they have the power to nuke it. Adobe is the first BigCo to get the message. Everyone who follows will get the same message.

I've been thinking a lot about the Twitter Platform and Ecosystem recently. I think it is at an inflection point, much like the desktop software and hardware business was in the mid 80s as the desktop platform started to mature.

They got so big so quickly that there was no way for the Borg to claw them back. Same for all these other Web businesses. Amazon, Ebay, Skype, Facebook, Twitter. They came out of nowhere, and what they were doing was free, so the Borg couldn't just do a crappy knockoff and sell it for less. They were up against free -- the Web companies were using their own strategy against them.

Speaking of the newest employees, Twitter’s new COO, Dick Costolo, just started at the company recently. During TechCrunch50, he was asked on stage why he joined Twitter. After all, he had sold his previous company, FeedBurner, to Google for $100 million, and upon leaving Google, he probably never needed to work again. But his response is telling, “My first reaction was, you don’t get a chance to work on potentially one of the pivotal companies.”
