As our special report this week makes clear, the superstars are admirable in many ways. They churn out products that improve consumers’ lives, from smarter smartphones to sharper televisions. They provide Americans and Europeans with an estimated $280 billion-worth of “free” services—such as search or directions—a year. But they have two big faults. They are squashing competition, and they are using the darker arts of management to stay ahead. Neither is easy to solve. But failing to do so risks a backlash which will be bad for everyone. [...] The world needs a healthy dose of competition to keep today’s giants on their toes and to give those in their shadow a chance to grow.

Don't play on other peoples turf and productise a feature ... for them. Sure they can't be everything to everyone and you can serve a niche, you are going to have to play by their rules their TOS. This thing where bright minds (educated) with small ideas (because they are easy) get burned over and over and over again. Human nature like irrational exuberance, hysterias and depressions. If you are dependable on a platform, on one kind of distribution model that is owned by another corporate (profit motive) and you are disruptive, pain in the ass, easily copyable,u are attackable on too many vectors. lots of risk. How The Facebook Bubble Is Driving Online Startups Into The Arms Of Offline Advertising | TechCrunch
FB accounts for >70% of all Social Media Ad spending! The rest is spend on Twitter and elsewhere. Programmatic Advertising is a crutch for native Web advertising to compete with FBs ability to slice and dice and analyse every nook and cranny. FB likes to be the web equivalent; Internet.org and asking/offering content creators/news papers to host content inside their Walls. And remember, Google missed this Social train badly, tried w Google+ after failing with Buzz. Was also late with (native) Mobile Search & just got going. And their last quarter(s) hinted at a stall of their advertising business and Wall Street doesn't like seeing this behemoth relying on just one business model while Nest Labs was a defensive acquisition (competing w Apple) and they lost out to FB to acquire WhatsApp. And if any Google X project will be able to live up to AdSense(Google Search) is questionable. Google might begin slowly dying soon in next 5 years by thousand cuts, like MSFT late 90's. Time is ripe.
