MPs launch tax inquiry after criticism of £130m Google-HMRC deal | Business | The Guardian
MPs have launched an inquiry into the UK’s tax system after the government was accused of allowing Google to pay too little in a £130m deal. The House of Commons Treasury committee announced that it would examine whether a radical shakeup of corporation tax was needed, amid concern that Google has been allowed to get away with an effective rate of 3%. The inquiry is not directed at Google, but will investigate the UK’s shrinking corporate tax base more widely and whether HMRC is doing enough to tackle avoidance. It will ask whether there needs to be a radical shakeup of the system, and whether business taxation could be based on turnover rather than profits. Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the committee, said the UK’s tax law had become too elastic, allowing companies to get away legally with paying too little. What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code

But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. Yahoos one disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much context to serve relevant - re-targeted ads to customers compared to FB, Twitter, Google. Same with Yahoo.com, its a bland/blunt page. In this light, incidentally, Satya Nadella's suggestion that Xbox is no longer core was as interesting as the end of 'Windows Everywhere' (which I discussed here). Microsoft has been working on adding computing to TV since before phones even had screens. But it turns out that it's the smartphone, not the TV, that's  the centre of the experience, and the TV is dumb glass just as the mobile network is a dumb pipe.

Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

Apple reportedly plays dirty to kill Spotify’s free tier — and I hope it gets away with it | PandoDaily
[ Apple's Might. History Rhymes. ] There’s a report out that Apple is pushing music labels to “force” Spotify to abandon its free, ad-supported tier. As Apple prepares to gather the ashes of Beats Music and relaunch its own streaming music service — which sources say will likely to be paid-only — this gambit would decimate Spotify’s user base from 60 million total users to only 15 million paid users. Moreover, sources told the outlet that if Universal Music Group removed its catalog from YouTube, Apple would pay the licensing fee the label conglomerate receives from that platform. (YouTube also has a streaming service in the offing). Considering Apple’s ability to preload apps onto new versions of iOS — not to the mention the fact that it already has 800 million credit cards on file and so only needs to convince a tiny portion of them to sign up in order to beat Spotify — the move would be an effective knockout punch for Apple in America’s streaming music fight.

Skype gets eaten by Networks greater than it ever could be, as feature for said Network(apps). Skype is also more than 10 years old. It's hard to disrupt yourself at that size, lots missed the mobile, underestimated the seismic shift of discretionary time spend on now on smart phone vs laptop/pc. Smartphone is less friction. Having an existing network of certain relations is less friction (Google Hangouts vs Citrix Go to Meeting (creating an account is friction, should partner up with Linkedin stupid)). Starting out as Desktop app and doing it really well there, and then just copying it to the smart phone? The smart phone is not a mini-pc/laptop! It's a much closer tight and emotional relationship (studies have showed).

FB accounts for >70% of all Social Media Ad spending! The rest is spend on Twitter and elsewhere. “Look, it’s always good to learn from others who have done a better job of marketing themselves,” Nadella said to a chorus of laughs from the crowd. His point was subtle but clear: Just because Google gets more press coverage for its long-term projects doesn’t mean it is working on more important or better projects than Microsoft is. When the laughs subsided, Nadella made a case for the Microsoft Research projects that are leading to big business opportunities inside the company, but which may not get the attention that Google projects do. One beneficiary of successful research work is Microsoft’s in-memory database business, which was built in-house. He said it was a $6 billion business that’s growing fast.

But what about growth? That’s the latest buzzword that investors and would-be investors want to talk about. And I think that’s fair. A stock price has a lot to do with future potential, after all.

- Apple might not want to break a stick to increase market share, it is well known that it is not the market share leader, but it is known for its huge margins and huge after sales (apps and co what goes with the ipad and iphone ) it might introduce a slightly cheaper version of its product range to increase market share but it will keep itself honest - with being a innovator and brand and thus able to keep the margins high.

Immediately following the iPad announcement, I wrote that the biggest news of the event may not have been the device itself, but rather that Apple was in control of building (or at least designing) the chip that runs it. While right now, this is iPad-only, it seems very likely that this chip (or some variation) will find its way into a future iPhone (maybe even the one coming this Summer). And if you listen to Steve Jobs’ own comment — “Apple is a mobile devices company” — it’s not hard to imagine a day where Apple is in charge of making the chips for its entire line of products.

What Happens When Apple Passes Microsoft In Value? Yes, When.
Apple has soared past HP, Oracle, IBM, and most recently, Google, to move into the top five most valuable companies in the U.S.

Here’s the real problem for Microsoft though. If Apple does in fact pass Microsoft in market cap, I can see CEO Steve Ballmer losing it, and that could steal his focus away from what should still be considered his real enemy: Google. It is Google, after all, that is directly attacking the core Microsoft brands, Office and Windows, where the company makes practically all of its money. Google Apps and Chrome OS are meant to do two things: Kill Office and kill Windows.

Apple (AAPL) is in talks with Microsoft (MSFT) to replace Google (GOOG) as the default search engine on its iPhone, according to two people familiar with the matter. The talks have been under way for weeks, say the people, who asked not to be named because the details have not been made public.

The discussions reflect the accelerating rivalry between Apple and Google, now the main provider of Web search on the iPhone. While the two companies have worked as partners in the past and Google Chief Executive Eric Schmidt had a seat on Apple's board, Apple and Google have more recently begun competing in several markets, including mobile phones. Google sells a smartphone, the Nexus One, that competes directly with the iPhone and it has spearheaded development of a wireless handset operating system that rivals the iPhone OS.

They got so big so quickly that there was no way for the Borg to claw them back. Same for all these other Web businesses. Amazon, Ebay, Skype, Facebook, Twitter. They came out of nowhere, and what they were doing was free, so the Borg couldn't just do a crappy knockoff and sell it for less. They were up against free -- the Web companies were using their own strategy against them.
