Why Readers Don’t Get the True Story — The Information
The costs of off-the-record reporting are increasingly greater than the benefits, as the culture of talking without attribution gives companies too much control. // lots of companies use this practice / PR ... for what? have good relationships, tend the relationships with reporters/journalists? Give them a sense of being in THEIR circle? From outsiders view it looks like 'patting on the head like a child?' // Sarah Lacy once talks about it that there must be more stuff than Techopus. But the cheerleaders within the bubble of success, fame, notoriety and money ... WILL not look, dig, investigate ... because they are hired as cheerleaders (pageviews business model)

Marissa Mayer - The future of technology - YouTube
how you gonna make money, on mobile. Facebook is able to do it, enabled by data it has (targeting) and has a unrivaled competitive advantage (eats more than 70% of social media adversing budget). It's about execution now and new products - for Yahoo! Focus on Mobile, reorientate (right the ship in other direction, while still keeping tab on yahoo.com which is still sizeable business for yahoo) the company, management, team, employees. And acquisitions that help it make Yahoo! a mobile app company, relevant in the ecosystem (see Flurry acquisition, Brightroll, ... ad network/platform). Yahoos one disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much context to serve relevant - re-targeted ads to customers compared to FB, Twitter, Google. Same with Yahoo.com, its a bland/blunt page. No contextual, personal content nor advertising apart from cookies data derived. [...] "User data belongs to the end user." [...] "Portable" [...] "Standardized." [...] "Companies live and die by people/talent."

Is Spotify doomed because of Apple Music? No — Spotify’s been doomed from the start | PandoDaily
Spotify is really the only legitimate competitor left. But its fate, like that of every streaming music service, is also subject to forces outside of its control — forces that are guided by the three-headed hydra of Warner, Universal, and Sony. [...] Although Apple Music and Spotify’s paid tier offer perks that free subscriptions do not — namely, full mobile access and no ads between songs — the majority of users will not pay for something they can basically get for free, even if they miss out on a handful of features. The percentage of Spotify users who pay for the service bears this out, having held steady for years at only 25%. And this trend shows no sign of abating — according to the most recent figures, paid users as a percentage of the whole crept up a hair but still sits at only 26.7%. How The Facebook Bubble Is Driving Online Startups Into The Arms Of Offline Advertising | TechCrunch
FB accounts for >70% of all Social Media Ad spending! The rest is spend on Twitter and elsewhere. Programmatic Advertising is a crutch for native Web advertising to compete with FBs ability to slice and dice and analyse every nook and cranny. FB likes to be the web equivalent; Internet.org and asking/offering content creators/news papers to host content inside their Walls. And remember, Google missed this Social train badly, tried w Google+ after failing with Buzz. Was also late with (native) Mobile Search & just got going. And their last quarter(s) hinted at a stall of their advertising business and Wall Street doesn't like seeing this behemoth relying on just one business model while Nest Labs was a defensive acquisition (competing w Apple) and they lost out to FB to acquire WhatsApp. And if any Google X project will be able to live up to AdSense(Google Search) is questionable. Google might begin slowly dying soon in next 5 years by thousand cuts, like MSFT late 90's. Time is ripe.

Twitter Acquires Android Lockscreen App Cover, Moves Deeper Into Mobile Services | TechCrunch
[ THE HOME SCREEN on your PHONE is now the SCREEN YOU have to be on. PERIOD. You can read Josh’s review of how Cover works here. Cover is being somewhat cryptic in discussing what it will be working on at Twitter. “Twitter, like Cover, believes in the incredible potential of Android,” they write. “They share our vision that smartphones can be a lot smarter — more useful and more contextual — and together we’re going to make that happen. We’ll be building upon a lot of what makes Cover great, and we’re thrilled to create something even better at Twitter.”

Build the Steak, not the Sizzle — The Entrepreneur’s Journey — Medium
You can market your ass off, but if your product sucks, you're dead. Your steak can sizzle and look crazy appetizing, but if it doesn’t taste any good, your customers aren’t coming back. In order to build a functional business that can take on a life of its own, your product just has to be real. You need to spend all of your time and energy on creating something that actually brings value to the people you're asking for money! I know it sounds obvious, but it’s something I can’t overstate. It's imperative.
