What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. It's about execution now and new products - for Yahoo! Focus on Mobile, reorientate (right the ship in other direction, while still keeping tab on yahoo.com which is still sizeable business for yahoo) the company, management, team, employees. And acquisitions that help it make Yahoo! a mobile app company, relevant in the ecosystem (see Flurry acquisition, Brightroll, ... ad network/platform). Yahoos one disadvantage is that it doesn't have as much context to serve relevant - re-targeted ads to customers compared to FB, Twitter, Google. Same with Yahoo.com, its a bland/blunt page. In this light, incidentally, Satya Nadella's suggestion that Xbox is no longer core was as interesting as the end of 'Windows Everywhere' (which I discussed here). Microsoft has been working on adding computing to TV since before phones even had screens. But it turns out that it's the smartphone, not the TV, that's  the centre of the experience, and the TV is dumb glass just as the mobile network is a dumb pipe.

Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

Spotify can be a "very comfortable number two" after Apple. Some investors appear to agree. Despite the imminent arrival of Apple Music, Spotify said in June that it had raised $526m (£334m) in new funding and was now valued at $8.5bn (£5.4bn). Mark Williamson, its head of artist services, says the company has only just "scratched the surface" after getting people to pay for music again. Apple reportedly plays dirty to kill Spotify’s free tier — and I hope it gets away with it | PandoDaily
[ Apple's Might. History Rhymes. ] There’s a report out that Apple is pushing music labels to “force” Spotify to abandon its free, ad-supported tier. As Apple prepares to gather the ashes of Beats Music and relaunch its own streaming music service — which sources say will likely to be paid-only — this gambit would decimate Spotify’s user base from 60 million total users to only 15 million paid users. Moreover, sources told the outlet that if Universal Music Group removed its catalog from YouTube, Apple would pay the licensing fee the label conglomerate receives from that platform. (YouTube also has a streaming service in the offing). Considering Apple’s ability to preload apps onto new versions of iOS — not to the mention the fact that it already has 800 million credit cards on file and so only needs to convince a tiny portion of them to sign up in order to beat Spotify — the move would be an effective knockout punch for Apple in America’s streaming music fight.

It isn't only native apps that foreclose these possibilities. JavaScript frameworks seldom map application state to URLs. Either way, the URLs still exist because, under the covers, native or not, these are still Internet applications. Open up an HTTP debugger and you'll see those URLs fly by. But they are increasingly unlikely to map cleanly to application states or to be accessible to users who want to save or exchange those states.

Apple is in a terrible position here because the future of mobile apps are Web apps, and Google excels at making those. Apple needs Google, its most dangerous competitor in the mobile Web market, to keep building apps for the iPhone. Google would be foolish not to since the iPhone still has the largest reach of any modern Web phone. But it will no longer be a priority.

That is why certain smaller ecosystems (app stores) and companies like Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, RIM (with Blackberry and PalmPre), each with their own proprietary OS (Symbian, Windows Mobile incl. an app store, have it harder to gain traction and gain diversity. I would say that if they don't radically innovate, open it up, they will always be tail chasers in the new game.
