Emerging sex disease MG 'could become next superbug' - BBC News
What is MG?
Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that can cause inflammation of the urethra in men, causing discharge from the penis and making it painful to urinate.

In women, it can cause inflammation of the reproductive organs (womb and fallopian tubes) too, causing pain and possibly a fever and some bleeding.

You can get it by having unprotected sex with someone who has it. Condoms can prevent this spread.

It was first identified in the UK in the 1980s and is thought to affect 1-2% of the general population.

MG does not always cause symptoms and will not always need treatment, but it can be missed or mistaken for a different sexually transmitted infection, such as Chlamydia.

'World's worst' super-gonorrhoea man cured - BBC News
[hf to all the sex tourists] Discussions between Public Health England, the World Health Organization and the European Centres for Disease Control agreed this was the most serious case of antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea ever detected.

But now two "similar" cases have been discovered in Australia. One also had sex in South East Asia, the other reported no foreign travel.

Dr Hughes said they will be "challenging" to treat and were a "timely reminder" to everyone that super-gonorrhoea is likely to be more common in the future.

The Guardian view on medical dangers: evolution in action | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
This is not as frightening and widespread a threat as the rise of antibiotic resistance, but it remains a chilling example of the complex unpredictability of our interactions with the natural world. The law of unintended consequences is powerful. No one could have imagined that a more efficient way to produce ice-cream might lead to the growth of hospital infections. The real difficulty in both cases is that the costs of industrial food production are not paid by the food processors and farmers who profit most from it. Only coordinated international action can ever fix that – and time is running out.

‘Antibiotic apocalypse’: doctors sound alarm over drug resistance | Society | The Guardian
“In the Ganges during pilgrimage season, there are levels of antibiotics in the river that we try to achieve in the bloodstream of patients,” says Davies. “That is very, very disturbing.” The creation of these soups of antibiotic-laden waters and banks of drug-soaked soils is ideal for the development of “superbugs”. Rare strains that are resistant to antibiotics start to thrive in farm animals that are raised in these artificial environments and emerge as highly potent infectious agents that then spread across the planet with startling speed. Examples of these include tuberculosis, which was once easily treated but which, in its modern multi-drug-resistant form, known as MDR-TB, now claims the lives of 190,000 people a year. &! https://www.theguardian.com/society/2017/oct/13/antibiotic-resistance-could-spell-end-of-modern-medicine-says-chief-medic

Almost untreatable superbug CPE poses serious threat to patients, doctors warn | Society | The Guardian
New figures show that four times as many people have died as had previously been reported in an outbreak in Manchester.

In 2009, the first cases of a type of CPE called Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase were detected. In 2014, the hospital trust confirmed that 14 people had died from this infection, contracted within the hospital, in the previous four years.

But the Bureau’s research shows that there have been 61 deaths in the last seven years, including a six-year-old boy with leukaemia who caught the infection while undergoing a bone marrow transplant.

WHO names 12 bacteria that pose the greatest threat to human health | Society | The Guardian
Health experts have previously warned that resistance to the drugs that are used to fight infections could cause a bigger threat to mankind than cancer.

If antibiotics lose their effectiveness, key medical procedures – including organ transplantation, caesarean sections, joint replacements and chemotherapy – could become too dangerous to perform.

About 700,000 people around the world die annually due to drug-resistant infections and, if no action is taken, it has been estimated that such infections will kill 10m people a year by 2050. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-39104411

Rise of deadly super bugs in hospitals linked to Tory austerity cuts - The London Economic
An ‘appalling’ rise in deadly super bugs E.coli and MRSA is linked to the Conservatives cutting and outsourcing cleaning contracts, according to GMB.

Three thousand cleaners have been slashed from the NHS wage bill since 2011/12, new figures reveal – despite hospitals treating more than a million more patients every year since then.

Meanwhile in the past year cases of E.coli, MRSA and MSSA – a strain of the MRSA bacteria – have rocketed by more than 8,000.

New form of superbug found in Scotland for the first time (From Herald Scotland)
A NEW form of superbug regarded as a “substantial public health risk” has been found in Scotland for the first time. The bacteria, discovered in a salmonella patient who returned from South East Asia, contains a genetic mutation that makes it resistant to the powerful "last-resort antibiotic" colistin.

Referred to as the mcr-1, the gene appears to be seamlessly transferred between bacteria which could make anti-biotic treatments redundant to dangerous strains of disease such as E.coli.

One person was prescribed antibiotics for seven years. Researcher Dr Alison Layton said: "It could cause the emergence of antibiotic-resistant Propionibacterium acnes - the bacterium implicated in acne - making acne harder to treat in some cases.
"Worryingly, the use of oral antibiotics is also likely to drive resistance in other bacteria, unrelated to acne."

Super-gonorrhoea's spread 'causing huge concern'
Doctors have expressed "huge concern" that super-gonorrhoea has spread widely across England and to gay men.
The new superbug prompted a national alert last year when it emerged in Leeds, as one of the main treatments had become useless against it.
Public Health England acknowledges measures to contain the outbreak have been of "limited success".
Doctors fear the sexually transmitted infection, which can cause infertility, could soon become untreatable.
Cases of super-gonorrhoea have now been detected in the West Midlands, London and southern England.
Only 34 cases have been officially confirmed in laboratory testing, >>> but this is likely to be the tip of the iceberg of an infection that can be symptomless. <<< + cuts to public health budget! //&! bit.ly/23PdjDp

Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.
