What the Hell Happened to Personal Style?
Where a 14-year-old Kate Moss put in her time on Portobello Road with Corinne Day, learning to thrift, self-style, and create her own ambling glamour, the young fashion plates of today have outsourced the development of their style to professionals. And those employed to keep the young and stylish considered that way don’t dare take any real risks, for fear of sartorial missteps, bad tabloid titles (and the online equivalent), or a mention on a worst-dressed list. [...] We are so inundated by these images from paparazzi, from media, from the stars themselves, that we cease to see any meaning behind any of it. Which would be fine (their funeral, as the saying goes), except it’s a very costly absence of meaning, both societally and economically.

The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Under-40s worse off as result of state pension changes, data shows | Money | The Guardian
[ how do you save up when you can afford housing (nor even a mortgage, have credit cards (drinks and presents), and student loan. all the while tories help to prop-up the property bubble, the only wealth uk households actually have! ] Most people now in their teens, 20s and 30s will be worse off as a result of changes to the state pension system, while millions of older people will gain, according to the government’s own figures. The data will fuel concern that millions of younger people are suffering from the effects of what has been dubbed “intergenerational unfairness”, partly caused by the government targeting money and resources at the older generation. DWP issued the data to back up its assertion that the introduction of the new flat-rate state pension in April “will make millions of people better off” – but the figures also provide stark confirmation that younger people will be losers from the changes.

Chris Farley - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[ 33 advanced heart disease, body couldn't take the abuse any more, overdose much more likelier ] Following his final guest appearance on SNL on October 25, 1997 there was a visible decline in Farley's health. Farley's hoarse voice and flushed skin were the subject of public scrutiny.[35] In the final years of his life, Farley had sought treatment for obesity and drug abuse on 17 occasions.[36] On December 18, 1997, he was found dead by his younger brother, John, in his apartment in the John Hancock Center in Chicago.[37] An autopsy later revealed that Farley had died of a cocaine and morphine overdose early that morning.[38] Advanced atherosclerosis was cited as a "significant contributing factor."[24] Farley's death is often compared to that of his SNL idol John Belushi, who also died at age 33 of an accidental drug overdose consisting of cocaine and heroin.[14]

Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

Are 'Instagram Husbands' really a thing? - BBC News
A tongue-in-cheek video is highlighting the plight of "Instagram husbands" - those poor partners who are stuck miserably photographing the exploits of their loved ones. Its creators say it's a joke about the shallow nature of social media - rather than a comment on gender politics. [...] Instagram skews heavily towards young people and women: according to one estimate, 68% of its users are female. Facebook and Pinterest also skew female, while Twitter and Tumblr are roughly balanced and Reddit and similar forums are predominately male, according to the Pew Research Center.

From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

What about all the ballyhoo about manufacturing jobs coming back to America? Well, some have. But they pay lousy wages. The average wages of production and non-supervisory employees in manufacturing are lower today than they were in 1985, when adjusted for inflation. [...] Bottom line: Most Americans have got zilch out of this recovery. In fact, they’re worse off now than they were in 2000. Meanwhile, the top 0.1 percent is doing fabulously well. More and more people are concluding the game is rigged -- which it is. No one should be surprised at the surge in populist anger on the left and the right.

One-fifth of youngsters suffer from 'high anxiety' - BBC News
The study looked at the wellbeing and mental health of 7.5 million young people in the UK aged 16 to 24. [...] The figures also show a rising proportion of young people who felt dissatisfied with their health. [...] The figures from the ONS show a picture of a growing number of young people who are satisfied with their lives - but with a persistent minority reporting unhappiness or suffering from anxiety. [...] Campus anxiety [...] But in terms of anxiety, 18% report high levels of anxiety and almost 16% have "medium" levels of anxiety. In a separate measure, there are almost 21% of young people with "evidence indicating depression or anxiety". And young people's perceptions of their own physical health seemed to be progressively more negative, with more expressing dissatisfaction and fewer feeling satisfied. Laurie Anderson: 'Capitalism is a disaster for human relations' | Film | The Guardian
The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

Malala Yousafzai & Kylie Jenner. Both turned 18 recently. One was given a Ferrari and spent thousands on facial modification. The other was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, survived a gun shot to the face by the Taliban due to corruption in her country, and opened a school for Syrian refugees to combat the lack of education for youth around the world. What's upsetting is the media is only covering one of these stories as "breaking news." Share the post to spread real love and inspiration across the youth of the world. Last thing to note, Malala is infinitely more beautiful! **re-posted // hard things are hard for a reason! // what happens to the cognitive surplus what everyone talked about at the turn of the century? its being eaten by consumption pattern - on the mobile homescreen (Entertainment, utility, Gaming, Escapeism, snacking).

Five years, building a culture, and handing it off. - Laughing Meme
Nothing we know [ about X ] should be assumed to be true. // Technology is the product of the culture that builds it. // If you want to build for the long term, the only guarantee is change. Invest in your people and your ability to ask questions, not your current answers. Your current answers are wrong, or they will be soon. // Software development should be thought of as a cycle of continual learning and improvement rather a progression from start to finish, or a search for correctness. If you aren’t shipping, you aren’t learning. If it slows down shipping, it probably isn’t worth it. Maturity is knowing when to make the trade off and when not to. // You build a culture of learning by optimizing globally not locally. Your improvement, over time, as a team, with shared tools, practices and beliefs is more important than individual pockets of brilliance. And more satisfying. Hey, Advertisers. It's Serena Time! - Bloomberg View
In sports marketing, no one ever got fired for hiring a cute blond female athlete. It is the default choice. This can be, let’s just say it, racist. It’s definitely lookist. But it’s mainly conservative. In advertising, in television, in movies, the tendency is to look backward. Hiring only people who fit past models of success may often not work, but it comes with fewer consequences when it fails than trying something new does. To get all Keynesian about it, “Worldly wisdom teaches that it is better for reputation to fail conventionally than to succeed unconventionally.” [ risking looking like a fool ... vs playing it safe. incrementalism a to b - vs - dreamer/imagination ---- Logic will get you from a to b. The Vergecast 168: Really good codeine - YouTube
min 46 // Instagram increased res for square format, now allowing all photo formats (vertical and landscape, after user hacked the square format - putting in landscape or portrait photos with borders - to make it square) vs what it was and was not and what it only offered on release day. "the great equaliser." all had the same tool, limitations, options, ways to express, make photos more interesting. thus it showed off some specific creative you (how to use your phone camera), not your skill and experience with Photoshop, lighting, photo school rules - that can set you apart. Instagram was a small, limited, enhanced window you your world, to that moment - captured. And now like Social Media. It is being gamed. Exploited. Abused. For specific commercial and or personal purpose. // Instagram was sort of, lucked out, with not being something for everyone. Survivors | Bothsides of the Table
Failure. To most people it smells. People are afraid of it. It’s like cancer or divorce. When you have it you find you who your true friends are because they’re the ones who double down on helping, on being available, on listening, on understanding. Most people run from failure or disease because they’re hard to handle. Hard to know how to deal with. Awkward. But I am attracted to those who have had severe set-backs in life because it tells you something about the mettle of the person with whom you’re dealing. It reminds me of a famous quote in one of my favorite novel’s “Damage” by Josephine Hart “Damaged people are dangerous. They know they can survive.” [...] closed up shop at the very first hurdle. I wouldn’t work with him again. [...] Honor is what I’m looking for. How you failed is significantly more important than if you failed. What to Make of Amazon's Work Practices? | Bothsides of the Table
It’s best encapsulated in a famous Jeff Bezos quote, “You can work long, hard or smart, but at Amazon.com you can’t choose two out of three,” [...] Try working at Goldman Sachs, [...] You think it’s different at any of the top consulting firms? [...] You see organizations like these thrive on large pools of some of the country’s best and brightest graduates that trade off 2-5 years of work experience under extreme pressure in exchange for skills, experiences & relationships that will last a lifetime. [Accelerated Learning] [...] Think its a cake walk working @ any of the countries top law firms? [...] Should we do an article on what it’s like to be a medical resident? How abt working in the US military? Chief of Staff for a major political figure? What abt a top athlete in the NFL or NBA or even part of the coaching staff. Think they dont have work/life balance challenges in a field theyve chosen to work in? [#Top 100 of X vs avg white- or blue-collar worker ] [what u optimize for?]

What Google’s Alphabet Really Spells for Silicon Valley: “I” Is for Innovation (And Also Irrelevance) | Re/code
Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive. // To my mind, Google needn’t agonize about staying current to what the kids are up to quite as much as it seems. I know former Intel star Andy Grove once said that “only the paranoid survive,” but everyone from my vantage point seems have taken that to extremes. In fact, aging probably shouldn’t be so much a worry anywhere in Silicon Valley, given the most powerful companies are run by these same ever-aging execs, and most of the money funding the startups is controlled by another cadre of mature — almost always — former dudes. The olds run the place more than it looks. [...] To modify the famed “Godfather II” quote from Hyman Roth: This is the life you have chosen (to always change). Plato once noted that “nothing is real, because everything is always changing or becoming something else.” It’s an old saying, for sure, but it still works for me and maybe realizing that is not such a bad thing.

Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Jessica Lahey’s ‘The Gift of Failure’: A Fear of Risk-Taking Has Destroyed Kids’ Love of Learning - The Atlantic
When Success Leads to Failure. The pressure to achieve academically is a crime against learning. [...] Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning. [...] Is that what we want? Kids who get straight As but hate learning?

Celebrity lifestyles for sale | Life and style | The Guardian
It started with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop – now everyone from Zooey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon to Lena Dunham is selling you their way of life [...] Did this have a bearing on how they then responded to the way the story unfolded across the media? This is the less quantifiable benefit of the celebrity lifestyle brand: the emotional yank of feeling as if you’re part of a community, albeit one trying hard to sell you sunglasses. To be a fan today is to constantly be sold to, but also to constantly be questioning and scrutinising the celebrity’s choices. Fans are “polytheistic”, says Auerbach. “They have more choice and want to ‘follow’ a range of celebs who appeal to different parts of their personalities.” The aspirational foodie on Instagram, the interiors on Pinterest, the “sassy” motherhood blogger, the feminist tweeter. “It’s less about individual stars,” Auerbach adds, “and more about constellations.”

The real victims of increased tuition fees? The old
Applications from 18-year-olds are on the rise, including from Britain's poorest families. But part-time and mature students are being deterred. [...] George Osborne talks of his vision of moving to a “higher wage economy”. But while improvement in skills are necessary to lifting productivity, wages and boosting growth, adults are being put off investing in their education. The consequences are particularly deleterious for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who are more likely to apply to university later and on a part-time basis; the unattractiveness of part-time courses thus imperils social mobility. [...] The fees system for mature and part-time students is putting too many off developing the skills they need for the UK to thrive. [ at least fund a scheme for public-private partnership w companies to chip in ~30% of the cost for their employees ]

The brilliant thing about Kate Moss is that she can never be shamed | Fashion | The Guardian
Broadsheets love her, tabloids hate her - and she seemingly couldn’t care less what anyone thinks. For this, we should salute her. [...]The brilliant thing about Moss is that she can never be shamed: a newspaper could run a story about how she was caught having an orgy with several members of the Tory front bench, Sister Wendy and a labradoodle while simultaneously smoking propane, and, while the tabloids would spontaneously combust with their tangy combination of voyeurism and phony morality, the rest us would just nod and say, “Yup, that’s what I reckoned a quiet Sunday afternoon would be like for Kate Moss.” She showed fashion advertisers to be the hypocrites that they are when all those who had hired her precisely for her rock’n’roll image then dropped her in 2005 after she was photographed apparently taking cocaine, only to come back barely five minutes later with her yearly earnings doubled.
