Caloric Restriction vs. Plant-Based Diets | NutritionFacts.org
To do this, the researchers recruited vegans from the St. Louis Vegetarian Society, and went to the Calorie Restriction Society to find folks practicing severe caloric restriction. What did they find?

Only the vegan group got a significant drop in IGF-1. These findings demonstrate that, unlike in rodents, long-term severe caloric restriction in humans does not reduce the level of this cancer-promoting hormone. It’s not how many calories we eat, but the protein intake that may be the key determinant of circulating IGF-1 levels in humans, and so reduced protein intake may become an important component of anti-cancer and anti-aging dietary interventions.

Sugary drinks tax 'would stop millions becoming obese' - BBC News
And TV chef Jamie Oliver has campaigned for the tax saying it was the "single most important" change that could be made. The director general of the British Soft Drinks Association, Gavin Partington, said: "The hypothetical claims made in this modelling study run contrary to real-world evidence. "In fact, the soft drinks tax in Mexico has reduced average calorie intake by six calories per person per day, with no evidence that it has reduced levels of obesity." Chancellor urged not to cut vital health fund - BBC News
George "Mr Judgement Call" Osborne // Vital health services in England including stop smoking, obesity and sexual health clinics are at risk, experts are warning. Earlier this year the Chancellor unveiled plans to cut the £2.8bn public health budget by £200m from January. The pot is held by councils so is not covered by the government's promise to protect the health service. But doctors, nurses and other senior health officials say the money is vital to relieving pressure on the wider NHS. A total of 11 groups, including the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Royal College of Nursing, NHS Confederation and Faculty of Public Health, have put their names to a letter to George Osborne asking him to reconsider the plans. The letter warned raiding the funds would simply cause greater ill-health and inequality in the population. NHS starts 'stem cell factory' for diabetes - BBC News
NHS Blood and Transplant wants to make and give the experimental therapy to patients at high risk of developing diabetes-related kidney problems. It is hoped the injections will slow down or stop tissue damage, removing the need for dialysis or transplants. Diabetes is the most common cause of end stage kidney disease, which kills around 40,000 people a year in the UK. The 48 patients taking part in the study will be treated at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust or at another trial site in Italy. The injection of cells they will receive are called stromal cells and they are grown from donated human bone marrow. These immature cells can grow and change into a variety of tissue - bone, cartilage and fat. But it is their ability to release proteins that reduce inflammation in the kidney which interests the researchers. In animal studies [shown] measurable improvements in kidney function[.] [NO CURE! Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
More patients in Scotland given antidepressants - BBC News
814,181 patients in 2014/15. Since 2009/10, use of antidepressants has increased by 28.5%. Two-thirds of the patients given the drugs were women, with use peaking in the 50-54 age group. The figures indicated antidepressant use was associated with deprivation. They recorded 225,969 patients in the poorest parts of Scotland receiving the drugs, compared with 110,507 in the least deprived areas. The total cost of antidepressants to the NHS in Scotland was £40.8m. The use of lower-cost drugs means this figure has fallen by one-third over the past 10 years. [...] "We are now looking at the flabbergasting statistic of more than one in seven people in Scotland being prescribed antidepressants this year. More maternity units closing doors, union warns - BBC News
The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) said a shortage of midwives was having a major impact and mistakes would "almost certainly be made". Some 42% of units shut down temporarily in the past year, its survey found. The government said it was determined to ensure "every mother and baby gets the highest quality care". A poll of 83 heads of midwifery at NHS trusts found there had been a rise in the number of units that had closed their doors, with 33% having closed the previous year. The RCM said budget cuts were also affecting services, with midwives struggling to cope with a rising birth rate and increasingly complex births. [...] But he added that rising numbers of complex pregnancies were also putting pressure on other UK countries. [...] The RCM says there is a shortage of 2,600 full-time midwives. Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease - YouTube
>> medical profession may come around: what is bad for your arteries and heart is bad for your brain as new research shows. cholesterol levels do play role/correlate with "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy"/beta-amyloid formation in the brain aka brain plaques. After all, its a build up of the arteries in our brain (brain consists mostly of fat) "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a neurological condition in which proteins called amyloid build up on the walls of the arteries in the brain. The condition increases the risk of hemorrhagic stroke and dementia." - 1.usa.gov/1MlBi6u // And prevention is better than cure because cognitive function starts to be lost early on before medical/personal detection of the condition. // LDL cholestero may be able to cross blood brain barrier. Pop star Selena Gomez diagnosed with lupus - BBC News
The disease is currently treated by drugs, and by chemotherapy designed to suppress the action of the immune system. - nutritionfacts.org/?s=autoimmune & nutritionfacts.org/video/cancer-as-an-autoimmune-disease/ - Immunosurveillance Hypothesis & nutritionfacts.org/2014/07/03/how-animal-proteins-may-trigger-autoimmune-disease/ //&! bbc.in/1LCHEzM &! Speaking to Billboard magazine, the 23-year-old was scathing about the gossip websites who suggested she was addicted to drugs. "I wanted so badly to say: 'You guys have no idea. I'm in chemotherapy. You're assholes'." "I locked myself away until I was confident and comfortable again." Gomez went on to criticise the tabloid press, who have spent years picking apart her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber as "vile". "I've been working since I was seven. I've been a Unicef ambassador since I was 17. It's so disappointing that I've become a tabloid story," she said.

Recorded Webinar: The Dietary Treatment of Cancer - YouTube
High-fat high-protein diets promote cancer. even vegetable fats. and both together is great environment for tumors. // thus 80/10/10 started by Doug Graham. and supported by T Collin Campbell in Whole to focus 80/10/10 macros in a Whole-Food Plant-Based Diet. // But Dr Greger also showed / talked about one study in his nutritionfacts.org videos, that even people threatened with death, are unlikely to change their diet, even if recommended by their treating physician. It's a case by case. Patient Compliance. WHY? Because people grew und and still live in an environment that is rigged against their health.

Chemistry Nobel: Lindahl, Modrich and Sancar win for DNA repair - BBC News
Their work uncovered the mechanisms used by cells to repair damaged DNA - a fundamental process in living cells and important in cancer. [...] DNA is open to an onslaught of different phenomena that can generate defects in our genomes. UV radiation and molecules known as free radicals can cause damage. Furthermore, defects can arise when DNA is copied during cell division - a process that occurs millions of times each day in our bodies. "Cigarette smoke contains small reactive chemicals, which bind to the DNA and prevent it from being replicated properly - so they are mutagens. And once there is damage in the DNA this can cause diseases including cancer," said Prof Lindahl.
