GoPro Isn’t Doomed Yet. But they must become a software company, fast.
GoPro needed to spend heavily in “video editing automation.”
GoPro needs software in spades, far beyond just something to make editing easier. The company that created the first mass-market visceral experience broadcasting device ought to have a hand in every dimension of the current live revolution, not just be one of its few cameras. That requires software. [...] Most consumers already have all the hardware they need to create video; what they need is software to make this infinity of images comprehensible. As the defensibility of hardware declines, GoPro has an advantage few other makers of software have: fans, tens or even hundreds of millions of them.

meritocracy, democratic, egalitarian. anyone who has interest, can find it. u will have an audience, even it is just 1. either they like it, share it & come back. or they leave u alone. // Beme, remove the aspect of creation. the friction. the cognitive cost. the overhead. a process to follow. a tutorial or how to listicle to read. to Google or to ask. >> Product developers & investors should think about the cognitive cost of their products. The cognitive cost very often can be much higher than the financial cost. Facebook Confirms Live Broadcasting Will Soon Open To Journalists And Verified Profiles | TechCrunch
Live streaming/Broadcasting from your phone, being a feature. Not a product. Nor a company. Good luck Meerkat finding a soft landing, exit, getting to cashflow postive quickly. If you are lucky an Android device maker like Samsung buy you for cheap and put your app pre-loaded on their devices. Twitch came out of Justin.tv and found itself a crowd with gamers, bought by Amazon. I wouldn't be surprised if Twitch releases an iPhone/Android app soonish.

Reddit Raising Big Funding Round With Help From Y Combinator Contacts | Re/code
Sources said the almost-anything-goes site has reached a preliminary agreement to sell less than 10 percent of the company for more than $50 million. That could give the company a valuation of upward of $500 million. Given investors’ new-found appetite for content companies — see: BuzzFeed, Twitch — Reddit’s valuation may swell significantly by the time the deal is done, well above the $400 million it was looking for in 2013. Amazon Pounces On Twitch After Google Balks Due To Antitrust Concerns
Google was unable to close the deal, because it was concerned about potential antitrust issues that could have come with the acquisition. The Mountain View, Calif. company already owns YouTube, the world’s most-visited content streaming site, which competes with Twitch to broadcast and stream live or on-demand video game sessions. One source noted that because of the concerns, Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement on the size of a potential breakup fee in case the deal did not go through. Representatives at Twitch could not be immediately reached for comment while representatives at  Google declined to comment. +++ http://www.businessinsider.com/what-happened-to-the-google-twitch-acquisition-2014-8?op=1 +++ !!Start-Up lesson >> http://pando.com/2014/08/25/twitch-ceo-on-jilting-goolge-amazon-shares-our-long-term-values-but-does-it-really/ !! // Google failed @social & human aspect again. How Twitch’s Founders Turned an Aimless Reality Show Into a Video Juggernaut | Re/code
Shear said that part of what made the Truman Show-esque experiment work was that this time, the product was something its creators wanted for themselves. “If we had any success with Justin.tv, it’s because we were our own user,” he said. “We knew what was important because it’s stuff we wanted.” +++ http://recode.net/2014/05/18/why-a-youtube-twitch-marriage-makes-sense/

Why Twitter, AT&T and GoPro all want to be media companies and Bing Launch of the Week - YouTube
Run of the mill companies which found traction and executed well(ish) to a certain degree (which is debatable) = Technology (which removes friction and enables discovery and builds graph of x [ friends, work, hobby, interests ] & user data [Big Data] ) +++ Media, Content. ... ie. Yahoo! - Tumblr, Twitter, Fb, Pinterest, Soundcloud. There is no free lunch. Period. Soundcloud monetization options: pro accounts, ads, + pre-roll in audio - targeted at same music taste. But intent - to buy - is much lesser degree.
