CBI head calls for GCSEs to be scrapped - BBC News
John Cridland, director general of the employers' group, says England's exam system is narrow and out of date. He proposes a system in which the most important exams would be A-levels, including both academic and vocational subjects, taken at the age of 18. Ministers are pushing for all pupils to take a core group of academic GCSEs. [...] He says that for too long "we've just pretended" to have an exam system that values vocational education, when in practice, exams have operated as stepping stones towards a university degree. [...] "GCSEs are past their sell-by date and should be retired." He says that the only purpose they serve now is to allow measurement of schools through league tables. The proposal to scrap GCSEs comes as ministers are pushing for an even greater emphasis on academic GCSEs, with plans for all pupils to have to take core academic subjects. This announcement "misses the point that we need curriculum reform, not just exam reform", says the CBI chief.

American Schools Are Training Kids for a World That Doesn't Exist | WIRED
Our kids learn within a system of education devised for a world that increasingly does not exist. To become a chef, a lawyer, a philosopher or an engineer, has always been a matter of learning what these professionals do, how and why they do it, and some set of general facts that more or less describe our societies and our selves. We pass from kindergarten through twelfth grade, from high school to college, from college to graduate and professional schools, ending our education at some predetermined stage to become the chef, or the engineer, equipped with a fair understanding of what being a chef, or an engineer, actually is and will be for a long time. We “learn,” and after this we “do.” We go to school and then we go to work. This approach does not map very well to personal and professional success in America today. Learning and doing have become inseparable in the face of conditions that invite us to discover.

BBC News - More student loans won't be repaid, government believes
Ministers estimated that 28% of loans would never be paid back in full when factoring their calculations. But now repayment levels are projected to drop so low that the government is close to getting back less money than it would have by keeping the old system. Responding to a parliamentary question, universities minister David Willetts said the government had been reviewing its modelling on student loans and now estimated that about 45% would be written off - an increase from 40% six months ago. Economics consultancy London Economics said the "tipping point" at which the costs of the new system will exceed those of the old one would be reached if 48.6% of all student loans were not repaid.

Deutschland wird seine Wettbewerbsfähigkeit nicht allein mit Prädikatsexamen erhalten, sondern mit kreativen Köpfen, die den Willen haben, Risiken einzugehen. Mehr und mehr werden Leute gefragt sein, die sich selbstständig in neue Themen einarbeiten und nicht nur auf Anweisung handeln; die komplexe Sachverhalte analysieren und vernetzt denken. Die Wirtschaft braucht Absolventen mit Persönlichkeit, die fähig sind zur Selbstreflexion, und die in der Lage sind, schnell zu lernen. Doch Persönlichkeit ist eine Frage von Zeit - und der Freiheit, sie zu entwickeln. Dazu müssen die Studierenden ermutigt und die richtigen Strukturen geschaffen werden. Im Moment haben sie verdammt große Angst, das Falsche zu tun. Das sollte man ihnen nicht vorwerfen. Schon gar nicht, wenn man selbst in einer Zeit groß geworden ist, in der jeder Akademiker einen sicheren Job mit Tarifvertrag bekommen hat, wenn er nur seinen Namen richtig schreiben konnte. Die Zeiten sind unsicherer geworden.
