Antisemites use the language of anti-Zionism. The two are distinct | Kenan Malik | Opinion | The Guardian
Israel itself combines aspects of civic and ethnic nationalism. As the late historian Tony Judt put it in an essay for the New York Review of Books, Israel is both a democracy in which non-Jews can be citizens and “a state in which Jews and the Jewish religion have exclusive privileges from which non-Jewish citizens are forever excluded” and from which Palestinians grievously suffer. Judt faced great opprobrium for that essay, with many reviling him as “antisemitic” or a “self-hating Jew”. To oppose Zionism but not other forms of ethnic nationalism would indeed be antisemitic. But to oppose Zionism because one opposes ethnic nationalism is a legitimate view.
Judt, who in early life was a Zionist, came eventually to accept that the only lasting solution would be a single, secular state in which both Jews and Palestinians were treated equally. For anti-Zionists like Judt, “self-determination” in that piece of contested land that is Israel/Palestine should adhere to principles of civic, not ethnic, nationalism; that is, be the self-determination of the people, and only the people, who live there, whether Jews or Palestinians.

Taibbi: Goodbye, and Good Riddance, to Centrism - Rolling Stone
In December, Barack Obama said he wasn't worried about the "Corbynization" of American politics because "the Democratic Party has stayed pretty grounded in fact and reality." [...] For decades pundits and pols have been telling progressive voters they don't have the juice to make real demands, and must make alliances with more "moderate" and presumably more numerous "centrists" in order to avoid becoming the subjects of right-wing monsters like Reagan/Bush/Bush/Trump.

Voters for decades were conned into thinking they were noisome minorities whose best path to influence is to make peace with the mightier "center," which inevitably turns out to support military interventionism, fewer taxes for the rich, corporate deregulation and a ban on unrealistic "giveaway" proposals like free higher education. Those are the realistic, moderate, popular ideas, we're told. [...] Here and abroad, voters in other words stopped deferring to politicians and media figures and began making their own decisions about what is and is not realistic.

Tony Blair's legacy 20 years on - BBC News
[hard left was banished to the wilderness under Blair] Blair's supporters point to his domestic achievements - the minimum wage and all the new schools, hospitals and Sure Start children's centres that were built during his time in power - and they insist that his reputation will one day recover.
But with Britain on its way out of the European Union, and the Labour Party back in the hands of the left, it seems like much of what Blair stood for has been swept away.

Jeremy Corbyn has attracted "socialism fans", not Labour voters
centrist left was infiltrated my outright socialists - Although Corbyn was originally elected with broad support from existing members of the party, his power base within it now primarily consists of people who joined it in order to re-shape it in his image and their own. These people might best be thought of as "socialism fans", and are quite different from traditional Labour Party members and voters. They are people who joined the party not because they agreed with its goals and wanted to help it achieve them, but because they identified with the culture of Leftism and sought an active form of cultural participation — much as theatre buffs might join an amateur dramatics club, or history enthusiasts might join a medieval re-enactment society.

Admiral Lord West: Iraq invasion planned before Tony Blair told public (From Herald Scotland)
The decision to invade Iraq was made before Tony Blair publicly announced it "but they were looking for a reason" to do it, the head of the Royal Navy at the time has said.

Admiral Lord West, who was first sea lord when the war began in March 2003, said he was told by "some b*****d" to ready his forces in preparation for the conflict.

Lord West said: "I think there had been a decision that we were going to invade Iraq, that that was going to happen, but they were looking for a reason to actually do it."

How the Brexit vote unleashed a mutiny against the old order | Politics | The Guardian
But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. The aftershocks of the referendum were wreaking havoc with the old system. //&! How bad can Brexit be if it has made bankers think about inequality? [...] Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) immediately called Brexit the “biggest electoral riposte yet to [the] age of inequality”. Hey Britain – Your Kids Have Just Been Privatised
"Thatcher said the problem with socialism is that you run out of other people money. Henry VIII will tell you the problem with crony capitalism is you eventually run out of other people’s assets to sell." [...] In George Osborne’s mercurial March 2016 budget he showed his own Machiavellian sleight of hand. He is now seen as a politician whose leadership ambitions come before the welfare of the British people. Osborne’s allegiance is to The City not the country. When he and Peter Mandelson holidayed on financier Nat Rothschild’s yacht do you think they talked about free school meals and increasing the economic opportunities of the people in Grimsby? [...] Look at his actions and we see that one of Osborne’s aims is to reinstate the class divisions that began to ebb away with socially progressive policies. This last budget sought to weave a line into the fabric of society between the haves and have-nots. [...] We are at the end of the debt cycle and there’s nowhere else to go. [...] This is not the budget for the next generation of young people. This is the budget for the next generation of rent-seekers, moneymen and crony capitalists.

How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. We must do everything possible to reclaim our democracy.

Is this the end for the Freedom of Information Act? - BBC News
The commission's remit is to look at two substantive issues that officials keep complaining about: "whether the operation of the Act adequately recognises the need for a 'safe space' for policy development and implementation and frank advice", and whether complying with the act is too much of a burden. [...] The safe space? So what about the "safe space" arguments? Under current law, section 35 of the Act allows the withholding of policy development work, private office communications & letters between ministers. If that isn't enough, section 36 allows ministers to withhold other information that would undermine the safe space for discussion. [...] That is, more or less, the information that a good transparency law should publish. It is supposed to help us find cover-ups, incompetence and crookedness by the powerful. David Cameron & the director of the FBI have both asked for ‘backdoors’ to be included in encryption software [...] Keys Under Doormats: Mandating insecurity by requiring government access to all data and communications, is worth reading in full. It concludes that proposals for backdoors are “unworkable in practice, raise enormous legal and ethical questions, and would undo progress on security at a time when internet vulnerabilities are causing extreme economic harm”.

Unrest at Nest Labs
Coming from Dropcam, which boasted a much more egalitarian culture, a clash seems all but inevitable. Yet these employees also suggest that the differences between Dropcam and Nest are not just stylistic. One Nest employee says that Nest, which employs between 700 and 800 people, will see roughly double the revenue of Dropcam this year but that Dropcam, which employs 100 people, is growing its revenue eight times as fast, thanks largely to its subscription business. Many employees were reportedly disappointed to sell to Google because “we were firing on all cylinders, with a sensor product about to be released and an outdoor camera about to come out in 2015 and great sales. It just felt like we’d been chopped off at the knees.”

Foundation 25 // Tony Hsieh - YouTube
- it goes downhill when you don't have the confidence, guts, vision, passion, ... to make the hard decisions (willing to have hard conversations); not hiring great talent that do not fit the internal culture, saying no many times (avoiding feature creep, mission creep, walking past the core product value prop - 'does it actually help solve the problem?'). +++ Lessons from Good to Great (Book) - they all had strong cultures. ... it comes from the alignment, all being on the same page, pulling on the same string at the same time. not necessarily what you values are. At Google, Larry Page Finds His Right-Hand Man - The Information
When Mr. Page tried in vain to convince WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum not to sell the messaging startup to Facebook for $19 billion two months ago, it was Mr. Pichai who accompanied Mr. Page to the high-stakes talks rather than Vic Gundotra, who was in charge of Google’s social products and would have seemed a more fitting choice. [...] // @nest founder & former Apple exec @tfadell now 'owns' @Google's consumer hardware division, acc to @theinformation (via @verge); Google SVP Sundar Pichai reportedly dismantled most of @Android's hardware initiatives to give Fadell 'creative freedom' w/ future products following the acquisition of Nest || Reply :: The Information is 100% wrong! "I never liked meat and my son Hilary, 30 years... - The Vegan Society
"I never liked meat and my son Hilary, 30 years ago, said: 'If the world ate the grain instead of feeding it to animals and killing them, there would be enough food for everybody.' That moment my wife and I became vegetarian and I never touched meat since." Tony Benn, writing in 2006, who has died after a long illness. ▶ Marc Ecko Interview at The Breakfast Club Power 105.1 - YouTube
Marc Ecko - legacy over money. + Perception is perception, it's not reality. How are you perceived, your brand. Focus on what you are good at (Talent), and do that well (+Hustle). And then later comes the Hustle, even more so + harder work, if you want to go beyond that. ... "Kanye! You don't need those gatekeepers. [...] Don't let your product be defined by a certain price point [by those gatekeepers]. [...] Don't try to imagine your future in a straight line. [...] Hubris can kill yourself. Don't get high on your own supply. [Stay Humble, authentic, down to earth, stay true to yourself.]" [...] "Nike makes an event out of a product." + v=k3SIkVIj7TQ "Perfect is the Enemy of Great.
