It makes sense that hosting what the Southern Poverty Law Center described as the nexus of white supremacism on the Internet makes it difficult to “maintain a healthy and successful platform.” It’s obvious that Reddit doesn’t want to play host to racism and harassment. But the company doesn’t want to compromise too much on the “free speech” principles that hardcore Redditors, who are integral to the day-to-day functions of the site, obsess over. And Reddit also wants to cut ties with well-known hate centers like r/coontown that offend both advertisers and common decency. Reddit’s problem is that it wants to have it both ways. [ tl;dr Reddit wants to be more family friendly to be more attractive to advertisers, after all it has the pageviews to have advertising, what ever form, make it a sizeable revenue pillar. The decision to forgo that traditional revenue stream and attempt to broaden the install base of Windows 10 highlights the tough choices Microsoft must make as it tries to claw its way back into the competition for mobile. It also needs to marry the strength of the slowly waning desktop world to its offerings on phone, tablets, consoles, and the cloud. The goal is to create "universal" apps that work on Windows 10 and across Windows mobile, as well as on computing platforms like Xbox and the forthcoming HoloLens. Along with growing its user base to woo developers, Microsoft hopes it can use a freemium model, giving away more of its core software but monetizing in other ways. The margins will never again be as fat as they were in the glory days of Windows 95, but the number of people who own a personal computing device is now far larger. Apple aims for bigger bite of music market - BBC News
Spotify can be a "very comfortable number two" after Apple. Some investors appear to agree. Despite the imminent arrival of Apple Music, Spotify said in June that it had raised $526m (£334m) in new funding and was now valued at $8.5bn (£5.4bn). That's more than household names such as Sainsbury and Royal Mail are worth. Unsurprisingly, Spotify also thinks it can survive the Apple onslaught. Mark Williamson, its head of artist services, says the company has only just "scratched the surface" after getting people to pay for music again. (To be fair, Apple probably deserves some of that credit for its iTunes store.) [...] The big challenge for Spotify is continuing to grow if it has any hope of becoming profitable. The company reported a net loss of €162m (£117m) last year - largely because its agreement with record companies and publishers requires it to pay 70% of revenues to performers and writers. Worse still, they allow people to report each other for using “fake” names. People know this, and they use it as a mechanism to kick each other off the site. If you’re a marginalised person, such as a trans person, you may be left with no way to get back on. Facebook have handed an enormous hammer to those who would like to silence us, and time after time I see that hammer coming down on trans women who have just stepped out of line by suggesting that perhaps we’re being mistreated. Don’t shoot the messenger: Facebook asks game developers to trust its Messenger platform | PandoDaily
Messenger also has something else going for it: It’s not Facebook, not exactly anyway. Most people are familiar with the dangers of relying on Facebook for any meaningful revenues. The company is capricious, its algorithms even more so, and a rags-to-riches tale can be reversed with just a couple of keystrokes. It’s hard to imagine Messenger operating the same way. The platform is built on people directly communicating with each other instead of sharing things to the abyss and hoping that Facebook’s algorithms deliver them to the right person. Which means it’s also perfect for helping games spread via word-of-mouth. If Messenger is built right into the game — or better yet, the game only exists in Messenger — it will be easy for interested players to share it with their friends.

Through those experiences, it’s clear with the Messenger Platform rollout that the mission is different; have developers build great products and experiences that are more directly oriented to their friends. The very nature of the documentation for Messenger suggests building experiences that are focused, explicit and structurally sound, something that wasn’t quite there in 2007.

If someone searches for a restaurant that offers delivery through one of those providers, an option for “place an order” will show up in its Google information. For starters, we could pay Facebook to promote Pando’s posts, thus artificially propelling them up the News Feeds of our followers and inserting them into the News Feeds of our non-followers against their wishes. Or, I could take it a step further. Much has been written here and elsewhere about Facebook’s plans to convince news publishers to post stories directly to the social network’s servers. The idea is for Facebook to display articles from, say, the New York Times in Facebook’s own app alongside ads from its own marketing partners and pay news outlets a portion of the ad revenue generated by these posts. By hosting content itself Facebook stands to collect even more ad revenue and user data than it does now.
