Mattis’ Message to the World: Trump Is Out of Control
That was more than a letter of resignation provided today by Defense Secretary James Mattis. It was a bright red line in American history. [...] Two key points were cited by Mattis as intractable differences that existed between him and the president. First, he stated his strong belief in the alliances on which U.S. foreign policy has depended for three-quarters of a century and which have been serially attacked and eroded by Trump. Next he offered an explicit critique of the actions of Russia and China which he characterized as profoundly threatening on many levels.

“Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my positions,” Mattis wrote.

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

London attack: Theresa May says enough is enough after seven die - BBC News
https://twitter.com/iyad_elbaghdadi/status/871490728396038145 & https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jun/04/theresa-may-british-values-muslims-terror-threat - Speaking in Downing Street after a meeting of the government's emergency Cobra committee, the prime minister said the country "cannot and must not pretend that things can continue as they are".
"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Torture victims in high court challenge to Home Office over detentions | Law | The Guardian
Seven victims of torture who have been locked up in immigration detention are at the high court, challenging as unlawful a government policy that allows some torture survivors to be imprisoned.

The seven, who include victims of trafficking, a man kidnapped by the Taliban, and two men tortured because of their sexuality, say the government should no longer be able to routinely incarcerate people who have experienced persecution. The charity Medical Justice, which works to improve the health of immigration detainees, is also part of the judicial review challenge.

Trump signs new travel ban directive - BBC News
Donald Trump has, at last, unveiled his new immigration order, and it looks like government lawyers - and not just White House political operatives like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller - have had their input.
Gone are the most controversial measures of the old order, such as preference for Christian refugees and the suspension of existing visas and green cards.
The details of the action's implementation are outlined with greater clarity this time, with more than a week before the new rules kick in.

Britain is one of worst places in western Europe for asylum seekers | UK news | The Guardian
Britain is one of the worst destinations for people seeking asylum in western Europe, according to a Guardian analysis of policies, data and reports of the conditions faced by the record recent influx of new arrivals.

At the start of a year-long project with three other newspapers on Europe’s refugee crisis, the Guardian has analysed the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union’s big five nations – the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – and found the conditions in Britain do not compare well.

The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the US will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

Syria conflict: Russia's Putin orders 'main part' of forces out - BBC News
In a surprise move, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered his military to start withdrawing the "main part" of its forces in Syria from Tuesday.
He said the Russian intervention had largely achieved its objectives.
The comments come amid fresh peace talks in Geneva aimed at resolving the five-year Syrian conflict. [...] [ Comment: The decision to scale down Russian operations may partly be fuelled by cost, given falling oil prices; it could also be driven by a desire to end Russia's isolation and western sanctions.
But whilst Vladimir Putin has ordered his foreign minister to focus efforts on the political front in Syria, he appears to be hedging his bets. ]

Migrant crisis: Russia and Syria 'weaponising' migration - BBC News
[ positioning, pr, spin ...? ] US Gen Philip Breedlove said they were "weaponising" migration to destabilise and undermine the continent. He also suggested that criminals, extremists and fighters were hiding in the flow of migrants. Migrants are continuing to accumulate in Greece, after Macedonia stopped allowing more than a trickle through. On Wednesday it allowed around 200 Syrian and Iraqi refugees to cross, with thousands still stuck on the Greek side of the border. New figures suggest last year's total of one million seaborne migrants arriving in Europe could be matched well before the end of the year.

Migrants break down Macedonia fence on Greek border - BBC News

And Europe is failing the world. The people of Europe, are failing the world. ] [...] Individual countries like Sweden, Denmark and Belgium have broken ranks and imposed their own border checks. Others have failed to take in refugees. Angela Merkel pointed her finger squarely at Austria, saying its decision to accept just 80 refugees a day had led to today's problems in Greece. Europe's leaders have a chance to restore some unity at another crisis summit in a week's time. But it may be events on Greece's borders that dictate what happens.

Is it becoming a national security? // The announcement followed a request from Turkey, Germany and Greece at a defence ministers' meeting in Brussels. The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. Syria refugee crisis: six charts that show how Europe is struggling to respond | World news | The Guardian
Of the 1.2 million asylum applications filed, 356,805 were from Syrian applicants. The number of first-time applicants has grown hugely in the past five years. The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Europe has been driven primarily by applications from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] In Germany, one of the few EU countries to have reported full-year figures for 2015, there were almost 442,000 first-time asylum applications in 2015 alone: over a third of these by Syrians. Going through paperwork takes time, though; the country registered 428,468 Syrian arrivals last year. As a proportion of population, the most applications have been received in Hungary (649 applications per 100,000 population), Sweden (528 per 100,000 population) and Austria (where there were 273 applications per 100,000 population up to the end of November). //&! bit.ly/1o5FdLQ // Cameron Pays Up to keep them away and voters happy - bit.ly/1R3rJf5 &! bit.ly/1Kr9kqZ

Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians' - BBC News
At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists. It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November. The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says. Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare". Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also been accused of bombing rebel groups opposed to Mr Assad but backed by the West.

Syria war: UN Security Council unanimously backs peace plan - BBC News
The UN Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution outlining a peace process in Syria. The resolution endorses talks between the Syrian government and opposition in early January, as well as a ceasefire. The Syrian war, which is heading towards its fifth year, has killed more than 250,000 people and displaced millions more, the UN says. However, disagreements remain over the future of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The US, UK and France called for his departure, saying he had lost the ability to lead the country.

NATO says won't send ground troops to fight IS: report | Reuters
via https://redd.it/3vss9j - Stoltenberg stressed that the conflict was not a war between the West and the Islamic world, but rather against "extremism and terrorism". "Muslims are on the front line in this war. Most victims are Muslims, and most of those who fight against the IS are Muslims. We can not carry on this struggle for them," he said. //&!
