Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News
there is income inequality
there is health inequality (air)
there is political inequality, your voice only heard when you have money to donate and can pay lobbyists.
>> electoral reform (1), limit lobby influence and party donations (2), citizens assembly, devolution might have failed.

Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.

It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.

The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.

That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Racism will not be solved by there being more mixed-race children | Nikesh Shukla | Life and style | The Guardian
“Beige Britain” won’t be the utopia we want. It’ll be the same country it always was, but with a significant demographic change. Over 10 years NHS prescriped 100% more anti-depressants. Medicalised Society. Parked indefinetly on management medication no healing. Doctors are much more likely to keep people on drugs for longer with evidence suggesting it is a more effective way of treating patients.
But as common as antidepressants are, the fact remains the majority of people with mental illness report they are not getting help.

Loneliness: The cost of the 'last taboo' - BBC News
There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK who have "chronic" loneliness, with links to poorer physical and mental health and increased use of GPs, hospitals and social services.
The campaign says it should be seen as a problem in public health terms, like obesity and smoking.
For a decade of an older person's life, the extra economic cost of loneliness is calculated as £6,000. [...] "Everyone's on their phones, they're closed off."

New Study Finds That Transgender Identity Is Not A Mental Disorder
The research, led by the National Institute of Psychiatry, interviewed 250 transgender people and found that it is not a mental disorder as once believed. Apparently, distress and impairment are the two essential characteristics of a mental disorder, and they found transgender people can experience some distress but not because they are transgender, but because of social rejection and violence.

UK South Asian women 'hiding cancer because of stigma' - BBC News
But in 2014, research from Bridgewater NHS found Asian women between 15 and 64 years old had a significantly reduced survival rate for breast cancer of three years.
Ms Saini said her research suggests the influence of men in the family and elders in the wider community may be contributing to the issue.
"If they didn't think women should go for screening, then they didn't go," she said. The stigma surrounding cancer in South Asian communities spans different forms of the disease.
Ms Patel said there was a reluctance for women to go for a smear test because they did not want to be "defiled" or be considered "no longer pure". National screening statistics show people from ethnic minority communities do not go for screening as much as their white counterparts.

Plugging in through clothing: How children’s clothes influence perception and affective practices in day careThe Sociological Review - Elina Paju, 2017
Through the analysis of everyday practices of wearing clothing, clothes are seen as connectors. They enhance, diminish or expand possibilities for perception, action and affective practices in which children engage, thereby altering the children’s ways of being. The article proposes that the wearing of clothing plays a role in constituting selfhood outside of mere representations.

Thousands of doctors trained in Europe 'may quit UK after Brexit' | Politics | The Guardian
The BMA’s findings are based on a survey it undertook of 1,193 EEA doctors working in the UK. When asked if they were thinking about leaving the UK following last year’s referendum vote, 500 (42%) said yes, 309 (26%) said no, 278 (23%) were unsure, while the other 106 did not answer. [...] “While thousands of overseas and EU doctors work across the UK to provide the best possible care for patients, many from the EU are left feeling unwelcome and uncertain about whether they and their families will have the right to live and work in the UK after Brexit,” said Porter. European doctors feel significantly less appreciated by the UK government now than before the referendum. Their average rating on that score has fallen from seven out of ten before the vote to leave the EU to less than four out of ten now. & less committed to stay.

Why Justice for a Murdered 17-Year-Old Transgender Girl Is So Important
But there remains one big question: Will the case be investigated as a hate crime? Though, according to the Advocate, Josh knew that Mercedes, an aspiring cosmetologist, was a transgender woman before he killed her, the motive for the crime is still unkown. According to Rodgers, who said she isn’t familiar enough with this specific case to know whether or not it qualifies, “The federal hate crimes law explicitly includes gender identity as one of its categories, so [there] could be a way to charge the crime federally if the state murder prosecution is unsuccessful for some reason.” [...] If Mercedes’s murder is charged as a hate crime, it will be a unique case, as most of the transgender murders last year were not classified in that way, despite the fact that there seems to be a clear epidemic. Gender theorist Judith Butler told Broadly last year that men often kill transgender women as a result of feeling threatened.

Mental health care 'failing most people' - BBC News
Inadequate and underfunded mental health care in England is leading to thousands of "tragic and unnecessary deaths" [...] around three-quarters of people with mental health problems received no help at all. It said more needs to be done to tackle rising suicide rates. Ministers agreed with the findings, committing a £1bn extra a year by 2020 to treat a million more people. This is to come out of the £8.4bn the government has promised to the health service during this Parliament and comes on top of extra money already announced for children's services. David Cameron said the plan would help put "mental and physical healthcare on an equal footing". [ would help on the way, but not actually putting it, no targets, nothing to be held accountable to. this is piecemeal, satisfying the headlines, appearing to do something. is minority service. easier to under fund than cancer or neuro. demand resource mismatch @those ] //&! bbc.in/1QgiJxX

NHS mental health funding falls in England - FoI figures - BBC News
[ minority of patients. Can't do that with cancer treatment! Public sentiment would rip you apart. ] Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request showed the budgets for mental health trusts fell by 2% from 2013/14 to 2014/15. This compares to a rise of 2.6% in hospital trusts' operating budgets, according to analysis by the Health Foundation think-tank. The Department of Health said mental health care funding overall was rising. In the year to April 2016 the budget for mental health trusts was projected to rise just 0.3%. Of the 53 out of 59 mental health trusts in England which responded to the FOI request, 29 said their budget would be lower this year than last. [...] funding is not keeping pace - and many are facing cuts. [...] In Scotland, mental health spending was up just 0.1% last year, and down a projected 0.4% this year. [...] money increasingly is getting sucked in to meet their rising costs, [ diet-related and chronic preventable diseases ] & bbc.in/243Y4Yp

Cuts to council youth budgets are putting vital specialist provision for vulnerable youngsters in jeopardy [...] “Youth provision has always been the Cinderella service and LGBT youth provision is its poor relation,” [...] Overall, youth services directly provided by councils in England have been cut by 36% since 2011 – from £877m to £561m total expenditure, according to figures provided by Kate Green, shadow minister for women and equalities. “Councils are facing impossible decisions about youth services as the government slashes their revenue support grants by over 50%, regardless of the cost to individuals and communities,” //&! Can call centre therapy solve the NHS mental health crisis? | Society | The Guardian
Fast-track treatment aims to ease growing problem in the UK, but critics say it is the clinical equivalent to online dating [...] [ mental health - a mental health crisis ] This is no fringe issue in the health of the nation. The NHS believes people with mental health problems die 15 to 20 years earlier than the average, but the system is struggling to cope. Lord Layard, a government adviser on mental health, identified mental health problems as “the biggest causes of misery in Britain today”, with an estimated 6 million people affected. [ needs massive investment, no call centres ] [...] Meanwhile 40% of mental health trusts saw spending cuts over the past two years and fewer than one in eight people who suffered a mental health crisis said they received appropriate care in 2015, according to the Care Quality Commission. The regulator concluded this was “unsafe and inherently unfair”. [ referring complex cases to call centre is neglect and malpractice ]

DWP to apologise to woman whose brother killed himself after his benefits were cut | Society | The Guardian
A woman whose partially sighted brother killed himself after his benefits were cut is to receive an apology from the Department for Work and Pensions, after the health service ombudsman partially upheld her complaint about his case. It marks the end of a two-year battle for Linda Cooksey, 60, who believes her brother Tim Salter, a recluse with undiagnosed mental health problems, should never have been found fit for work by DWP assessors. [...] A report last month linked fit-for-work tests carried out between 2010 and 2013 with extra suicides and mental ill health. The DWP has said it has worked with medical experts and charities to make significant improvements to the work capability assessment (WCA) and give additional support to those with mental health issues.

'Grief and anxiety are not mental illnesses' - BBC News
Psychiatric diagnoses are not only scientifically invalid, they are harmful too. The language of illness implies that the roots of such emotional distress lie in abnormalities in our brain and biology, usually known as "chemical imbalances". This leads us to be blind to the social and psychological causes of distress. More importantly, we tend to prescribe medical solutions - anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medication - despite significant side-effects and poor evidence of their effectiveness. This is wrong. We should not be diagnosing many more people with meaningless "mental illnesses", telling them these stem from brain abnormalities, and prescribing medication.

Suspended BBC journalist breaks silence over Tyson Fury comments · PinkNews
[ Platforming, see paris lees on Germaine Greer and platforming for wrong people ... ] The Newsline journalist was since suspended, and had previously said he was not allowed to comment on the controversy. But in a new YouTube video, West did comment, saying: “I’m not really meant to say anything, but I wanted to just say that I chose between being an objective journalist and being a human being with thoughts and opinions with principles.” He went on: “I shouldn’t have given my opinion on something that was current” but said that at the same time he “couldn’t forget the little boy I was when I was nine or 10 at school and I was being bullied for being camp and being gay”. The video now appears to have been deleted from West’s YouTube page.
