Princess Haya: Dubai ruler's wife seeks marriage protection order - BBC News
UAE

Princess Haya initially fled to Germany to try and seek asylum there, but it emerged this month that she was living in central London - specifically, in an £85m ($107m) town house in Kensington Palace Gardens.

It's believed that Princess Haya will want to stay in the UK. However, if her husband demands her return to Dubai, this could cause a diplomatic headache for Britain - which has close ties to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

After she fled, Sheikh Mohammed wrote an angry poem accusing an unnamed woman of betrayal and treachery, and posted it on his Instagram page.

Putin beklagt ″wahnsinnigen″ Rüstungswettlauf | Aktuell Europa | DW.COM | 30.06.2016

UK to send five ships to Baltic as part of Nato buildup against Russia | Politics | The Guardian
Britain will also contribute troops to a new 6,000-strong force that is intended to act as a deterrent [...] After years of steady military withdrawal from Europe since the end of the cold war, the US last week announced a quadrupling of military spending to $3.4bn (£2.35bn) to increase its presence in Europe as a counter to Russia. The UK contribution, though modest by comparison, is still significant given the extent to which the navy has been reduced after years of cutbacks.

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. There will be more training for local Nato troops, more state-of-the-art hardware and more manoeuvres. [ ... + MH17 downing w Russian ground to air defense missile ]

About 100 British military personnel will be sent to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the MoD has confirmed. A further 25 will be involved in a continuing training mission in Ukraine. BBC News - Ukraine: UK and EU 'badly misread' Russia
The House of Lords EU committee claimed Europe "sleepwalked" into the crisis. The EU had not realised the depth of Russian hostility to its plans for closer relations with Ukraine, it said. It comes as French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about the crisis at a joint news conference in Paris. Ill-equipped The committee's report said Britain had not been "active or visible enough" in dealing with the situation in Ukraine. It blamed Foreign Office cuts, which it said led to fewer Russian experts working there, and less emphasis on analysis. A similar decline in EU foreign ministries had left them ill-equipped to formulate an "authoritative response" to the crisis, it said. The report claimed that for too long the EU's relationship with Moscow had been based on the "optimistic premise" that Russia was on a trajectory to becoming a democratic country.

War in Ukraine and the threat of conflict in the Baltics raise fundamental questions about the West's military alliance. What is Nato - the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation - for? The Supreme Court is about to tackle online threats for the first time | The Verge
The issue before the Supreme Court is whether "a true threat" requires finding that the threatener subjectively intended to be threatening. Elonis is arguing for a subjective intent requirement, claiming that his posts were meant as rap lyrics and not as threats, while the prosecutors are arguing for an "objective" standard—a threat counts as a threat if a "reasonable person" would think the statement is a threat. The government is arguing that it’s enough to use an objective standard, with an exception for "idle or careless talk, exaggeration, something said in a joking manner or an outburst of transitory anger." However, when it comes to the Internet, where context or tone may be more difficult to perceive, this objective standard has obvious drawbacks [...] [UK has] law that forbids electronic messages that are "grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene, or menacing character," [...] "with the intent to intimidate." [...] "[...] most likely to inspire fear of bodily harm."

U.S. threatened massive fine to force Yahoo to release data - The Washington Post
The U.S. government threatened to fine Yahoo $250,000 a day in 2008 if it failed to comply with a broad demand to hand over user communications — a request the company believed was unconstitutional — according to court documents unsealed Thursday that illuminate how federal officials forced American tech companies to participate in the National Security Agency’s controversial PRISM program. /// via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8305925 The documents, roughly 1,500 pages worth, outline a secret and ultimately unsuccessful legal battle by Yahoo to resist the government’s demands. The company’s loss required Yahoo to become one of the first to begin providing information to PRISM, a program that gave the NSA extensive access to records of online communications by users of Yahoo and other U.S.-based technology firms. +++ http://pando.com/2014/09/12/the-government-threatened-to-fine-yahoo-250000-per-day-if-it-didnt-participate-in-prism/ +++ Documents - http://bit.ly/1DbJosI
