BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Is the UK’s 'superficial' maths teaching style making us fall behind?
According to Andreas Schleicher of the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development, children in the UK are falling behind in maths, due to a ‘superficial’ teaching style based on memorising facts, rather than understanding mathematical concepts.

Mathematician and co-author of Maths for Mums and Dads, Rob Eastaway thinks that “good ways of teaching are problem solving and real world context.”

When teaching 9 and 10 year olds he uses maths and magic, playing number games with the children which makes them “excited…they want to know how, explore and investigate”.

Secondary school places for all 'undeliverable', councils warn - BBC News
[ planning taken out of hands of councils ] [ first the teachers strike (2014), then the doctors strike (2015/2016) - bit.ly/1T3QTfc ] The legal duty of councils in England to ensure that every child has a school place could soon become undeliverable, local authorities have warned. With a population bulge about to hit secondary schools, councils want powers to open new maintained schools and to compel academies to expand. Thousands of children are due to hear on Tuesday which secondary school they will attend from September. However the government says the warning amounts to "scaremongering". The population bulge which has put primary schools under pressure will start hitting secondary schools this year, according to official figures. Last year councils had to provide 2,740,000 secondary school places, but this will rise to 3,287,000 by 2024, the figures predict.

Doctors call for new tax on sugary food and drinks - BBC News
Doctors have called for the introduction of a tax on sugary food and drinks to tackle what they describe as an "obesity epidemic". The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh warned that being overweight may now be considered "the norm". It claimed a tax would help fund the "spiralling" healthcare costs associated with the problem. The British Soft Drinks Association (BSDA) insisted that the case is "not compelling". It cited research which suggested a 20% tax would save just four calories per day. Liverpool University chair of clinical epidemiology, Simon Capewell, is due to speak at a conference on the issue in Edinburgh later, entitled: "Obesity: A 21st Century Epidemic". [ ... rootless tax evaders crony capitalists have stake and no shared economic long-term interest ... capitalism has no selfl-imiter ...]

NHS chief warning on obesity - BBC News
People must be more responsible for their own health otherwise the NHS simply will not be able to cope, warns the head of NHS England. Simon Stevens says a national conversation is needed to tackle obesity in particular and he says the NHS should not be left to deal with the consequences on its own. // http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-32991129 "War on sugar. In a wide-ranging speech to the NHS Confederation conference, Mr Stevens also spoke about the need to do more to tackle obesity." // big food = no stakeholder, rootless manipulative, exploitative, crony capitalists seeking only profit maximization and shareholder value. // Tax rises preferred to NHS cuts among British people - bbc.co.uk/news/health-32180929 << tax on processed food, junk and fast food, animal products, sugar, fat (animal fat and pure added processed fats(plant oils)) // &! dailym.ai/1AKhTZn

Just look at the class sizes for the Privileged/Ivy League - not 30! NYT - EU and Google
“With more than a decade of hindsight, the theories supporting the case against Microsoft have all but fallen apart, and the pursuit of the company that makes Windows may suggest a reason for skepticism about this fight against Google: The tech marketplace is fluid and unpredictable. The giants that look most unbeatable today could falter in ways that may once have seemed unthinkable — and without a lot of help from the government.” [...] Google makes most of its money from search ads, but the market for such direct advertising may be tapped out. The next great wave of digital advertising — a market far bigger than search spots — will come from ad budgets now reserved for TV commercials, and many observers bet that Facebook, not Google, is in the best position to get that business. &! bit.ly/1aCgTK7 &! Fink Builds BlackRock Powerhouse Without Goldman Backlash - Bloomberg
BlackRock is the world’s biggest asset-management firm, a $3.45 trillion powerhouse that is Wall Street’s largest trading partner, set to pay investment banks $1 billion in fees this year. It manages $1.4 trillion for public pension funds in states including New York, New Jersey and California, and invests $240 billion for central banks and sovereign wealth funds such as the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

“There’s no bank, no sovereign wealth fund, no insurance company that’s as large as BlackRock,” says Ralph Schlosstein, a co-founder who left in 2007 and is now CEO of Evercore Partners Inc., a New York-based investment bank. “BlackRock today is one of, if not the, most influential financial institutions in the world.”
