Quentin Tarantino faces $100m copyright claim over Django Unchained | Film | The Guardian
Two scriptwriters have launched legal action against Quentin Tarantino, alleging that his 2012 film Django Unchained infringes the copyright of their screenplay Freedom, according to The Wrap. In the suit, Tarantino – along with the Weinstein Company and Columbia Pictures, which produced and distributed the film – Oscar Colvin Jr and Torrance J Colvin call Tarantino “an admitted thief”, quoting him as saying “I steal from every single movie ever made.” They say they submitted their screenplay to the William Morris Agency, which discussed Tarantino as a possible collaborator, and that the overlap of ideas and characters from their script goes beyond coincidence.

Bundesverfassungsgericht: Moses Pelham gegen Kraftwerk - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Google offers YouTube copyright support - BBC News
YouTube owner Google says it will help fund up to $1m (£650,000) in legal fees for some content creators who have received copyright takedown notices. It will step in if it feels their material is considered to be fair use. However the firm admitted that only a handful of people have been chosen to benefit from this support. Copyright holders are able to make requests to Google - or other sites - to take down content under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). However there are exceptions to the law, which vary around the world but can include the use of other material for the purposes of commentary and parody. If a small portion of somebody else's work is used in this context, or in news reporting or for teaching purposes in the US, it can be exempt from copyright legislation.

Groups Issue Warning: Pro-Corporate TPP Could Kill the Internet | Common Dreams | Breaking News & Views for the Progressive Community
Digital rights groups are greatly concerned about the Trans-Pacific Partnership deal. According to these groups, every internet user should be worried since the TPP will supposedly lead to censorship, curtail freedom of expression, and eventually violate people's privacy rights.

Open Letter to @FuckJerry, @TheFatJewish, and accounts like them. | Comedian Davon Magwood
[ via Casey Neistat ] I didn’t really think I was going to write this letter. I thought “hey it’s the nature of the beast”, but that thought really pissed me off. It shouldn’t be the nature of the beast. What added insult to injury, was one of the followers of “TheFatjewish” says in my comment sections “That’s how social media works”, then a lot of my fellow comedian friends mentioned how they have had their jokes stolen and reposted on sites like these without getting credit, even a “Times” magazine editor said that he also had a tweet stolen and reposted. [...] What I noticed happening were sites and people reposting my words with the picture and the words and not my freaking name!

Death to remixes: The enormous hidden threat of Soundcloud’s ZEFR partnership | PandoDaily
And Stuckey isn’t alone. Two days ago, remix artist DJ Cotton said on Twitter that SoundCloud removed 30 of his uploads due to copyright infringement. And some DJs have talked of abandoning SoundCloud altogether thanks to its ramping up of copyright enforcement. Legally speaking, it would appear that SoundCloud has every right to take down this copyrighted material, but the matter is not so clearcut. The legality of remixes and mashups has always been precarious, relying on a fair use doctrine that is vague by design. The work must be sufficiently “transformative” to avoid violating copyright law, but that distinction is subjective and can only be made by a judge, not a piece of software like the one used by ZEFR.

Latest TPP Leak Reveals Even Harsher Copyright Rules - Forbes
The US is also calling for criminal sanctions for copyright infringement, even where the infringement isn’t being carried out for commercial reasons. “If the US gets its way, then criminal penalties will apply even against users who were not seeking financial gain from sharing or making available copyrighted works, such as fans and archivists,” write Jeremy Malcolm and Maira Sutton of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). “Such a broad definition is ripe for abuse.” Indeed, a similar provision in a free trade agreement between Columbia and the US led to copyright laws that saw a Columbian graduate student arrested for posting another student’s academic paper online without permission.

How Jonah Peretti and BuzzFeed Got to $850 Million | Re/code
BuzzFeed +500 people. Even if you want to slight the company as nothing more than a Reddit repackager, someone has to do that repackaging. But if you’re only looking at BuzzFeed as a media company, then that $850 million might seem optimistic. Last year, people around the company pegged BuzzFeed’s 2013 revenue at $60 million, and now they’re supposedly on track for $120 million. Which means Dixon and his co-workers at Andreessen Horowitz are likely valuing Jonah Perreti’s company at something like 10x trailing 12-month sales. Investors value the New York Times at 1.2x sales. Time Inc. is at 0.77x. Time Warner, which mints money, is at 2x. + Are There Internet Dialects? Those YouTube Promo Plans Are A Lot More Common Than You Might Think
But it's something of a necessary evil, he continues. With copyright issues and the struggle to remain relevant amongst the sea of other YouTubers trying to get their Let's Plays noticed, a cushy bonus like a few extra bucks per thousand views could feel like a good deal. And so Boogie warns to take the videos you see with a grain of salt, because these kinds of deals are fairly widespread within the community. And despite many of these contracts necessitating a disclosure of the agreement in the descriptions of these videos, not every YouTuber is as open about the deals they make, Boogie says.
