What has the Women’s March accomplished, beyond mere visibility? | Jessa Crispin | Opinion | The Guardian
Women’s March // Advertisement

Since its inception, Women’s March has faced criticism by many within the feminist community. The March and its participants, we heard from many critics, marginalized Native women, disabled women, women of color, trans women and Jewish women to present a very safe, white, middle of the road protest. [...] Others called the organization out for not having any real agenda, and for focusing solely on what it was against – the Trump administration and Republican control of Congress – and not what it was for. This is a common problem for organizations that begin as protest movements.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

The Guardian view on the UK labour market: farewell, Lithuanian car valets | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
Of course, pay was not the only reason that migrant workers came to be so resented. Queues for doctors’ appointments and overcrowded classrooms were easier to see than differences in pay, and they played a bigger part in fuelling resentment. Yet in the same way that migration concealed structural change in wages, its impact on public services served as a distraction from the real cost of the austerity measures brought in by the coalition government in 2010.

Up to 70% of people in developed countries 'have seen incomes stagnate' | Business | The Guardian
Research by the McKinsey Global Institute found that between 65% and 70% of people in 25 advanced countries saw no increase in their earnings between 2005 and 2014. The report found there had been a dramatic increase in the number of households affected by flat or falling incomes and that today’s younger generation was at risk of ending up poorer than their parents. Only 2% of households, 10 million people, lived through the period from 1993 to 2005 – a time of strong growth and falling unemployment – without seeing their incomes rise.

How the Brexit vote unleashed a mutiny against the old order | Politics | The Guardian
But the revolution that had delivered Brexit, driven in large part by white working-class votes, was sweeping all before it in the most unpredictable way – careers and ambitions, along with what had seemed the safest of assumptions. The aftershocks of the referendum were wreaking havoc with the old system. //&! How bad can Brexit be if it has made bankers think about inequality? [...] Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) immediately called Brexit the “biggest electoral riposte yet to [the] age of inequality”. Investment group Pimco, which manages $1.5 trillion of bonds, warned clients about the “battle against inequality”. A warning to Gove and Johnson - we won’t forget what you did | Jonathan Freedland | Opinion | The Guardian
He didn’t believe a word of his own rhetoric, we know that now. His face last Friday morning, ashen with the terror of victory, proved it. That hot mess of a column he served up on Monday confirmed it again: he was trying to back out of the very decision he’d persuaded the country to make. And let’s not be coy: persuade it, he did. Imagine the Leave campaign without him. Gove, Nigel Farage and Gisela Stuart: they couldn’t have done it without the star power of Boris.

Greece isn't any old troubled debtor - BBC News
What is very striking - and important - about the agonised talks between Greece and its creditors is that no European leader has tried to bind the feuding sides together with a call to European solidarity, or with any emotive rhetoric about how this great monetary project is all about prosperity and peace for all eurozone citizens. [Career Politicians are are managing the status quo. They are no missionaries.] Nor has any great sense been conveyed that maintaining the wholeness and integrity of the eurozone is a matter of passionate principle. Instead the public and private debate has been couched in the language of national interests, rather than the imperative of keeping the so-called great European project on the road. [...] And some of them would say the creditors are in self-harming denial [not accepting a haircut or lengthy pause of repayment till economy is on a growth track] Or to put it another way, Mrs Merkel and Mr Hollande don't want the backlash from their own citizens.

Spain enters a new political era - BBC News
Anti-austerity parties, linked to the Podemos movement on the far left, which is barely one year old, have the prestige of holding power in Barcelona, and could form a coalition to rule in the Spanish capital. Across the country the ruling Popular Party (PP) of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has been punished. The PP will hold onto the fact that they still have the highest share of the vote of any single party. But they have lost absolute majorities in regional parliaments across the country, including in traditional heartlands like Valencia, where the party has been badly damaged by corruption. [...] What is also eye-catching is that significant support nationwide has shifted from the PP to parties on the left, even though the PP has taken Spain's economy from the height of the financial crisis in 2012 through to a period of impressive growth. [...] That could be because the social impact of the recovery is still not being felt by enough of the people bit.ly/1J0fkU3 & !> bit.ly/1Ht0Nfi

All dies gehört zur gesellschaftlichen Realität.

[...] The answers to these questions can be found in the appropriately titled “Manual of Disobedience.” Published online several days before the Occupy Central campaign was set to begin, the document (written in Chinese and English) is part how-to guide and part philosophical mission statement. It details the movement’s tactics, the rules for nonviolent protest, the legal codes that may be violated, and the exact procedure to follow should someone be arrested. It also implores protesters to “avoid physical confrontation, but also to avoid developing hatred in [their] heart,” and explains that the protests must be a model of the values that they are striving to see in their society, namely “equality, tolerance, love, and care.” [...] Book - Blueprint for Revolution.

YouTube - Inside Story - Spain in pain
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/may/21/spain-reveals-pain-cuts-unemployment

Just a week ago the Spanish had seemed stoical about one of the most depressing eras in recent economic history. Despite unemployment hitting 21% – rising to 41% for the young – widespread spending cuts and a socialist government bound to obey the diktats of Germany's chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the financial markets, they had refused to show their pain. Marches, sit-ins or riots were for the French – or British students. The real drama, anyway, was in north Africa. Spaniards stayed at home.
All that changed as demonstrations organised via Facebook and Twitter became static protests in city squares, mushrooming into something that caught politicians, unions and the media by surprise. While journalists were following the dull routine of campaigning for Sunday's municipal and regional elections, the steam was beginning to escape from a pressure cooker of discontent.
