Ken Clarke: Tories had deal with Rupert Murdoch for 2010 election | Politics | The Guardian
David Cameron may have done “some sort of a deal” with Rupert Murdoch to win the Sun’s support for the Conservatives in the 2010 general election, Ken Clarke, the former justice secretary, has claimed.

“Quite how David Cameron got the Sun out of the hands of Gordon Brown I shall never know,” Clarke said. “Rupert would never let Tony [Blair – Brown’s predecessor] down because Tony had backed the Iraq war. Maybe it was some sort of a deal. David would not tell me what it was. Suddenly we got the Murdoch empire on our side.”

More than half of donations to EU referendum campaigns came from just ten wealthy donors | The Independent
In its report Take back Control: How big money undermines trust in politics, the campaign group found that of the £31,834,885 donated to both sides during the referendum, £16, 444, 905 – about 52 per cent – came from just 10 individuals or companies. [...] Leave received £17.5 million of all donations - almost exactly one vote for every pound given towards the Brexit campaign - compared to Remain’s £14.2 million.

Transparency International also found that 95 per cent of all money raised during the referendum campaign came from just 100 donors – a tiny fraction of the millions who voted on June 23.

But the most striking quality of her on-air performance is that when Kellyanne Conway is done talking you know less than when you started. It's not the way she deflects, or lies. Man removed from UK flight over 'prayer' message on phone | UK news | The Guardian
The Nigerian-born Christian believes the passenger next to him assumed he was a Muslim and jumped to the conclusion that he may be a terrorist. “That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me,” he told the Guardian. “Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. I don’t think anyone, irrespective of their religion should be treated in such a way. “If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim.” [...] But he now fears he is on a terrorist watchlist because when he returned the next day from his business trip, the electronic passport gate did not let him through and he had to speak to an immigration officer before proceeding. “Someone felt I was a terrorist because they saw the word ‘prayer’ on my phone and now I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in and out of the United Kingdom,” he said.

"stay campaign is project fear" leave campaigners go without facts. [...] Chris Grayling, one of the six cabinet members who favour Brexit, had earlier dismissed a 28-page Cabinet Office report warning of what Cameron called a “decade of uncertainty” if Britain votes to leave, as “completely ludicrous”. Grayling accused his boss of running a “relentless campaign of fear”. Separately, employment minister Priti Patel, another prominent advocate for Brexit, ramped up the criticism of cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood’s decision to limit the support civil servants can provide to pro-Brexit ministers, describing it as “unconstitutional”. British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

Mass EU migration into Britain is actually good news for UK economy | UK news | The Guardian
[ symptom! offer of Brexit vote was election move out of fear, UKIP gains ] Far from the unfounded headlines about EU migrants grabbing British jobs, record numbers of British citizens are in work too [...] the quarterly labour market survey – showed that record numbers of British citizens were in work too. Indeed, 1 million more Britons are in work and 850,000 more Europeans are working in Britain since David Cameron became prime minister. [...] Britain should not be seen as a sudden, recent mass invasion to be necessarily feared by every British worker. It is now a fact of life that Britain has been a country of net mass migration every year for the past 20 years. [...] European migrants are not a drain on Britain’s finances; what is more, they actually pay in more in taxes than they take out in state benefits. [...] [60%] are now university graduates [...] For eastern Europeans, 25% are graduates – similar to the proportion in the UK-born workforce. [ below Germany levels? ]

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. The EU referendum, Project Fear Mark II, and the thorny path the SNP must tread backing Europe (From Herald Scotland)
[ Brexit was put on table by tories in order to not lose more votes to UKIP. immigration/migration became a point in the manifesto because of the rise of the far-right in form of UKIP. a Fear based move. nothing principles. career politicians move. their own sleeze and propaganda, polarisation, fearmongering cought up to them. ] THE long-awaited Cabinet split over Europe finally happened last week. Chris Grayling, the Tory Leader of the House, announced that it would be a “disaster” for Britain to stay in the European Union under present terms. But the earth didn't exactly stop spinning. So far, none of the “big beasts” of the UK Cabinet – London Mayor Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Teresa May, or the former Education Secretary Michael Gove – have shown much eagerness to join. One suspects they don’t want to back a loser. David Cameron isn't purring yet, but he is certainly looking very self-satisfied.

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. [...] That episode, like the vote on student grants, is consistent with a pattern displayed by this government of impatience with democratic norms, verging on contempt. One habit is bundling measures of primary importance up in secondary legislation. [...] lay the foundations for a long-term Conservative monopoly on government.

Why should Rachel Watt have to sleep in her wheelchair? | Frances Ryan | Opinion | The Guardian
This is the hidden face of Britain’s social care crisis: disabled people left without help in their own homes. Read most coverage of the cuts to social care and it is easy to believe the crisis solely affects older people. According to research by Scope, 83% of disabled people in this country are now living without sufficient hours in their care package. That means being unable to get out of the house or waiting 14 hours to go to the toilet. This is what happens when austerity strips £4.6bn from social care spending in five years. As the government squeezes local authorities, social care has been left with a “funding gap” – a gaping wound, shall we say – that is growing by £700m a year. The King’s Fund thinktank has told the Guardian that the financial prospects for Britain’s social care system in 2016 “could not be worse”. [...] The biggest trick the government can play is the myth that any of this is inevitable. [...] It is the political choice[.]

Civil servants will be banned from helping Brexit ministers, Cameron says - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
He put Brexit on the table because it was popular and feared to lose votes to UKIP. Opportunist. Career Politician. Needs a script. And now is changing the script in order not to lose the plot. The public voting yes. // David Cameron has made it clear that civil servants will not be allowed to help ministers who want to make the case for Britain leaving the European Union. He set this out in a letter listing four rules that will apply to ministers who want to campaign for Brexit. [...] [ and makes clear what his cabinet and peers can vote on ] Ministers will only be free to dissent on the issue of staying in the EU or leaving. [...] Ministers who speak from the frontbench will be expected to support government policy. But “we need to be flexible and apply common sense”, Cameron said. [...] This implies that Outist ministers will not be allowed to make the case for leaving the EU from the Despatch Box. [ Meaning his Brexit-Op is a dickless stunt. ]

Linking junior doctors and terror is cheap politics | Barbara Ellen | Opinion | The Guardian
[ Tories, nasty party at it again; spin and positioning - to use something to put someone or something in a bad light. distract. smoking gun and mirrors. avoid. change direction and tone of discussion or debate. ] Now questions are being raised about political interference, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron calling it an attempt to “politicise the Paris terror attack” and the “lowest politics” he’d seen in years. Keogh and the Department of Health say that it was “entirely appropriate” that they communicate with each other and co-ordinate a response. Communication is generally a very good thing, co-ordination, in this case, not so much. Indeed, some might say that this is desperate stuff, an overt attempt to stir up public fear and animosity towards striking medics.

This July the current director general, Tony Hall, agreed to shoulder the burden in return for relief from other costs.

Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. They privilege simplistic concepts that lack nuance and lend significant edge to leaders who talk tough and offer what psychologists call “closure”.

Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

David Cameron to curb migration from EU by targeting jobless | Politics | The Guardian
[ working on the fringes ] The prime minister’s plan to curb in-work benefits has met a wall of opposition from other EU governments, with many saying they would discriminate against workers from other member nations and cut directly across Europe’s commitment to free movement of labour. But with other European leaders desperate for the UK not to leave the EU, and determined to help Cameron put together a package he can sell at home as substantial, the plan B option, involving curbs on out-of-work migrants, is emerging as a potential deal saver.

Duncan Smith has 'complete faith' in PM's EU negotiations - BBC News
Iain Duncan Smith has said he has "complete faith" in David Cameron's ability to secure welfare reforms as part of the UK's EU renegotiations. Mr Cameron has said there will not be a deal this year amid reports of growing opposition to proposals to restrict EU migrants' access to in-work benefits. The work and pensions secretary said he remained "upbeat" since all EU nations wanted to curb "benefit tourism". He said the PM wanted a deal he "could sell to the British people". The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.
