Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

Investors urge fast food and pub chains to act to reduce farm antibiotics
A group of powerful City investors who together control more than $1tn in assets have written to leading fast food, pub and restaurant chains urging them to take immediate action to reduce antibiotic use in their meat and poultry supply chains. [...] UK human campylobacter infections have become more resistant to antibiotic treatment. Percentage of human campylobacter cases tested that showed some degree of resistance to the antibiotic ciprofloxacin - approaches 50%!!! [...] Of the 17,332 human campylobacter cases tested in 2015 for resistance to ciprofloxacin, 48% had some degree of resistance to the drug. In 2005, this figure was 30%.

Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Poultry deregulation plans risk bringing back dark days of food scares. History shows problems start when food companies police themselves: think salmonella, BSE, foot and mouth, swine flu - bit.ly/1UON3ai - Privatisation move! Austerity. Self-regulation.

Stop Cancer Before It Starts (Michael Greger, M.D.. 2011)
[ oldschool dr greger ] not only is meat a carcinogen itself, but meat has accumulated pesticides and herbicides, because cows and co eat animal feed full of pesticides and herbicides. but also their loved ones (male chicken, not laying eggs, not putting on meat fast enough for industry to make a bigger profit) are in it, ground up. Even fat trimmings are in animal feed! // breast cancer rates on the rise as meat eating babyboomers come into old age 40-50 and older

Hedge funds tell Puerto Rico: lay off teachers and close schools to pay us back | World news | The Guardian
Report commissioned by 34 hedge funds says government had been ‘massively overspending on education’ despite spending only 79% of US average per pupil [...] The group of 34 hedge funds hired former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economists to come up with a solution to Puerto Rico’s debt crisis after the island’s governor declared its $72bn debt “unpayable” – paving the way for bankruptcy. [...] The funds are “distressed debt” specialists, also known as vulture funds [ Heuschrecken], and several have also sought to make money out of crises in Greece and Argentina, the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the near collapse of Co-op Bank in the UK. // // they are implicit in lending money to a low grade borrower and took on the risk for higher interest rates. instead of looking out for long-term productive investment that benefit society, they go for the investment by click from a Bloomberg Panel, to meet their ROI at year end for their clients, promised in their annual letter.

Oil production and consumption: Running dry | The Economist
Oil production fails to keep up with demand
CRUDE-OIL prices shot up on June 8th—Brent crude to a one-month high of $118.59 per barrel—after OPEC representatives meeting in Vienna were unable to reach an agreement on production quotas. Many had expected an increase in quotas as members with spare production capacity, led by Saudi Arabia, pushed to avoid a price spike that may dampen long-term demand. As figures released in BP’s "Statistical Review of World Energy" show, global oil production has struggled to keep up with increased demand recently, particularly from Asia. In China alone consumption has risen by over 4m barrels per day in the past decade, accounting for two-fifths of the global rise. In 2010 consumption exceeded production by over 5m barrels per day for the first year ever, as world oil stocks were run down.

Will AOL and Demand Media’s Content Farm Strategy Prevail?
This is why folks like Slate’s Farhad Manjoo have ripped Demand Media to shreds, echoing the fact that its content is good enough to get indexed on Google’s search results but bad enough to induce users to click on a Google ad and go elsewhere (thereby generating revenue for Demand). That might actually have been one of the nicer things said about the company.

Online Content is Art and Science
Making sure it’s SEO friendly is also important, but in a world where content is shared through social networks, it needs to strike a chord with audiences, be it readers, listeners or viewers. Video, in particular, is not even really properly indexed on search engines, so an SEO-centric strategy might be useless to begin with. I’ve covered what makes video get discovered before.

But as much as venture capitalists don’t like to hear this, no amount of science will remove the art that is publishing, or the emotions that fuel marketing decisions.
