National minimum wage rise still fails to cover living costs, study shows | Society | The Guardian
Workers on the national minimum wage would still need to work for an extra six weeks just to cover their everyday living costs, despite an inflation-beating pay rise from this weekend, according to analysis.

More than 2 million workers are to receive a pay rise of at least 4.4% from Sunday, as the government’s national living wage increases to £7.83 per hour from £7.50 for over-25s. The increase amounts to more than £600 per year for full-time workers on basic pay.

Germany's AfD: how to understand the rise of the right-wing populists
Indeed, the party’s name stems from Angela Merkel’s now famous observation that there was no alternative to the policies her government put in place in a bid to save the euro at the height of the financial crisis. [...] The AfD is, however, a rather more complicated beast than that. Although many of the Eurosceptics who founded the party have long since left, their influence has not vanished completely. One of the AfD’s two "leading candidates" for the 2017 election, Alice Weidel, for example, is a 38-year-old lesbian who used to work for Goldman Sachs. She speaks fluent Mandarin and spent six years in China writing a PhD on the Chinese pension system. She is certainly not the archetypal leader of a far-right party.

Falling unemployment is great for the economy? Try telling cleaners like Irene | Stefan Baskerville | Opinion | The Guardian
While UK unemployment fell by 75,000 in the three months to July, bringing the jobless rate down to 4.3%, these figures disguise a disturbing trend in the British labour market – one of falling wages, rising insecurity and false self-employment. At the New Economics Foundation, we carried out research that shows two in every five people employed in the UK are in “bad jobs” – work that doesn’t provide a secure, living wage.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Britain’s young suffer as austerity continues to take its toll | Letters | Business | The Guardian
It is governmental negligence when the poorest young citizens do not have enough money to heat a home or buy a healthy balanced diet. Universities report time and time again that cold homes increase rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, excess winter deaths and mental illness. Inadequate diets increase the risk of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Debt with insufficient income impacts on health indirectly through increased stress, depression and anxiety, and suboptimal coping behaviours – such as increased rates of smoking and drinking.

After the crash in 2008, the Queen asked: “Why did no one see it coming?” Ten years later, she might well ask the same question about the rise of early deaths among young people.

Back to the future on inflation
[ no rising demand = no inflation ] Globalisation and the march of technology have strengthened the hand of employers and weakened that of workers. So it is no surprise that though unemployment has relentlessly fallen, wage growth remains in the doldrums.

Then there is the war between generations. As the baby boomers approached retirement, they sought to safeguard their wealth. Inflation-targeting central banks, the dismantling of the welfare state and fiscal austerity were the natural results. The modern macroeconomic constitution has disenfranchised the inflationary constituency of the young. &! https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/tax-cuts-for-the-rich-solve-nothing-by-joseph-e--stiglitz-2017-07

[a speech to reassert herself] She will say her commitment to social justice and determination to address difficult issues remains “undimmed”, despite her calamitous general election performance. 93% Of All Jobs "Created" Since 2008 Were Added Through The Birth/Death Model | Zero Hedge
Here are the details of how over 90% of the jobs created in the past decade were nothing more than a "statistical" adjustment in some BLS model. [...] Furthermore, self-employed persons as a percentage of the working age population and the number of jobs created by establishments less than one year old are also declining. [...] the multi-decade slowdown in new business formation. Further supporting the Harvard study findings, a Brookings Institution paper called “Declining business dynamism in the United States: a look at states and metros” shows that business formations slowed down and business deaths accelerated after the crisis of 2008 (below to the right). (( THE LOW HANGING FRUITS OF INNOVATION HAVE BEEN PLUCKED! + ECON WINNER TAKES ALL = COMPETITION ON PRICE )) [...] The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) seems to be alone in its belief that the entrepreneurial environment in the US is improving. We believe that the BLS has been artificially inflating the monthly payroll numbers via the birth and death adjustment. This overstatement is not trivial in nature – the adjustment added 30% of all jobs reported since 2010.

The contracts have been attacked for allowing some firms to keep people in insecure work, depress wages and deny people their full employee rights. [...] "Two years ago our staff started to tell us they needed some form of contracted hours because they wanted to get mobile phone contracts, car loans and - as they got older - mortgages to buy houses. Car finance deals soar to new record - BBC News
The Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have raised concerns about such deals.
The Bank's worry is in relation to levels of consumer borrowing.
However Adrian Dally, head of motor finance at the FLA, said lenders were behaving responsibly.
"We do not share their concerns," he told the BBC. "Lending is responsible. This is a sustainable model going forwards." [...] That is largely because motorists can hand their cars back if they can no longer afford payments.
Ultimately it is the car manufacturers who carry the risk on such deals, as they guarantee second-hand values.

Researchers have answered a big question about the decline of the middle class - The Washington Post
“This idea that we’re having this progression of increasing incomes over time — I think that might be true for the upper regions of the income distribution but not for the median,” said Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard University economist who was not involved in the study. [...] The implication, Guvenen argues, is that economists should search for explanations for households’ current financial woes in the youth and childhood of today’s workers.

“We are maybe looking at the wrong place for the solution to stagnation in wages and rising inequalities,” Guvenen said. “To understand higher inequality, we should turn and take a closer look at youth.” /// &! one comment https://redd.it/69zf27 said part to do w competition. if you don't work for that money, others will. labour pool available for some kind of work. already applicable in the auto industry in usa uk and germany.

UK firms struggle to find employees – even before Brexit bites | Money | The Guardian
The signs of rising demand for temporary staff will fan fears about economic insecurity for UK workers as many find themselves struggling to make ends meet because they are on zero-hours contracts or taking work on a self-employed basis with no access to holiday or sick pay. In response to such worries, Theresa May last year commissioned a review of modern employment from Matthew Taylor, the head of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).

Taylor, the former head of Tony Blair’s policy unit, is due to publish his report in the summer but will provide a flavour of his findings in a speech on Tuesday. At his annual RSA lecture, he will call on policymakers and employers to make all work “good work” – which he defines as “fair and decent, with scope for development and fulfilment”.
