GoPro Isn’t Doomed Yet. But they must become a software company, fast.
GoPro needed to spend heavily in “video editing automation.”
GoPro needs software in spades, far beyond just something to make editing easier. The company that created the first mass-market visceral experience broadcasting device ought to have a hand in every dimension of the current live revolution, not just be one of its few cameras. That requires software. [...] Most consumers already have all the hardware they need to create video; what they need is software to make this infinity of images comprehensible. As the defensibility of hardware declines, GoPro has an advantage few other makers of software have: fans, tens or even hundreds of millions of them.

Warum die Thighbrows auf Instagram auf die Thigh Gap folgen - Style - bento
Bye, Thigh Gap. [Hi] Thighbrows. [ superficial world that Social Media created. ] Es handelt sich dabei um das Haut- und Fettröllchen, das an der Falte zwischen Bein und Po – also an der Hüfte – entsteht, wenn man kniet, sitzt oder sich nach vorne beugt. Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

Banner “Fraud” Doesn’t Matter | Hacker News
bit.ly/1Jb27sI "A Message from brand marketers to publishers [...] We use banners as little billboards now. We use them strategically as incredibly cheap repeat impressions for brand awareness. We know many people don’t see them, we know most people don’t see them. Thats okay. We use them accordingly & the cost has been adjusted down to make them a perfectly great buy even though most people dont see them. [...] It’s an indicator to us that you don’t get this by the fact you’re still always talking about clickthrough, which was kind of BS when you first sold it to us twenty years ago, and doubly the case now." [ CPM will go lower, fundamentals point in that direction, Social Media & other future forms of advertising will fill in the lower CPM rates overall. Calm down, tech journalists: It’s okay if you don’t use Snapchat | PandoDaily
artificial limitations is the trend that emerged late out of the freeze box that was SV 2001-2005/6 ... artificial limitations ie 140 charachters, ephemeral content, <10s videos, Yo, (photo)filters, ... and anonymity within the echo chamber made Secret --- and the real world broke the idea. The World’s Biggest Popstars are Walking Contradictions | NOISEY
bit.ly/1HXHZIy &! "However, what's most telling, is that Lorde has become a bit of an icon for the materialists that she set out to criticise. Kanye loves her; "Royals" soundtracked an advert for a $700 Samsung phone; she's collaborated with MAC cosmetics. It's this exact contradiction - I'm this and I'm also this - which is part of a wider social trend that's fucking around with the definition of authenticity and counter-culture. This stems from what, if you want to get academic about it, is called hyperreality - a phenomenon first observed in the eighties by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. Shows like The Only Way is Essex are the pinnacle of hyperreality, where even though it clearly states that it's been scripted for your pleasure, the programme relies on the viewer buying into the idea of the characters being completely genuine. [...] we don't want to reject consumer culture at all. We want to buy into the idea of rejecting it. [...] We suck it up and go along with it.

What last night’s “The Newsroom” gets wrong about “disruption” in media | PandoDaily
This has become a common theme in Hollywood and television’s depiction of Silicon Valley. Tech entrepreneurs, especially on HBO’s popular series “Silicon Valley,” are often portrayed as awkward losers who lucked into a billion dollar payday simply because they stayed inside playing computer games as kids instead of riding their bikes. It’s as if society still hasn’t graduated from its 1980s “Revenge of the Nerds” mentality. But while there’s truth to every cliche, the act of turning these rich kids into objects of ridicule glosses over the well of sociopathic greed they drew on to make their companies so successful in the first place. Sure, some tech founders are lovable geeks. But the capacity for evil is just as large in Silicon Valley as it is in any other corporate environment. ... [ to the point, that Unterhaltungsfernsehen = menschenverachtend. ]

Lena Dunham and Aziz Ansari’s Big Book Deals – Flavorwire
But out of the two, which deal was the source of 1,000 thinkpieces and vague concern trolling about whether-or-not a big deal like this was “right?” You guessed it, Dunham’s. Was there a similar level of outrage for Ansari’s book deal? No — and perhaps speaking to his smaller footprint, culturally, it basically was reduced to a side note. The difference here speaks to a couple of things. Is gender playing a big role? Certainly! Also the difference in Dunham selling a book of essays “about her life” versus Ansari’s take on “modern love” where he was inspired “after reading Malcolm Gladwell.” Ansari’s book will be about his life, to be sure, but it’s not sold to the public as memoir in the same way. It is also probably the result of “Lena Dunham” being a loaded gun in the media representing a lot of ideas regarding young women and power, whereas Ansari, on the other hand, doesn’t represent every young man ever — or every young man of Indian-American heritage, either.

What I love about Abramson’s [...] she’s named it, she’s owned it, but she doesn’t make herself a victim. “With the things that get us to really crave the news, the tenor of the story tends to have a negative impact on the way we see the world more generally,” he said, referring to the controversial and scandalous subjects that draw in chronic readers and viewers. “We become more cynical.” Does he regard his own bingeing on these topics as escapist? + https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4aAJrJB6h0 + http://alaindebotton.com/news-users-manual/ “Absolutely,” he said. “You forget about your life for 30 minutes while you read about Chris Christie’s implosion.” Joshua Ferris’s forthcoming novel, “To Rise Again at a Decent Hour,” is about “the obsessive-compulsive nature of your own personality emerging through these platforms, and disliking the person who is taking advantage of them,” he said. Why I’m Bullish on the News - POLITICO Magazine
Go maximum mass or maximum specific. [...] News organizations are also going to have to mix and match revenue models. I see eight obvious ones: advertising, subscriptions, premium content, events, cross-media promotion, crowdfunding, micropayments and philanthropy. Jimmy Fallon Exits Stage (Just) Right : Monkey See : NPR
Because Jimmy Fallon lives on joy, and joy is not solitary. It's why he's not at his strongest in plain monologue delivery, and it's why every single good bit he has is fundamentally a collaboration. Even something like "Thank You Notes," which seems to be just him reading cards, has morphed into a silly little dance he does with the keyboard player. [...] As I've said a bunch of times, the precise quality that could make Fallon irritating on Saturday Night Live — the inability not to laugh during sketches — was a glimpse at why his late-night show has been so utterly delightful. He gets so jazzed about things, and he's so energized by the presence of other humans, that he has the poker face of a five-year-old. He laughs, and somebody else laughs, and then everybody laughs more. It's not everybody's thing, but boy, it's been mine.
+ http://www.spiegel.de/video/selbstbewusster-schweinsteiger-laesst-sich-zeit-beim-comeback-video-1318976.html

Katy Perry ‘Prism’ Good Example How Albums Don’t Work Anymore | Variety
We’ve turned into a nation of grazers. And the artist’s job is to constantly be at the smorgasbord. Not to deliver one big meal that is picked at and thrown away, but to constantly provide tantalizing bites to the public. [...] no one’s got time for mediocre anymore. [...] Labels are no longer in the record business, they’re in the star business. How to maximize the revenue of an individual or band in as many media as possible, in as many ways as possible. Yes, while you were bitching about piracy, your whole business model disappeared.

[...] Sie ist der klügste Popstar ihrer Generation.
