Everything in Moderation? Even Heart Disease? | NutritionFacts.org
Health authorities appear to have taken the patronizing view that the public can’t handle the truth and would rather the science be watered down. It’s worth rewatching and pausing on the Framingham data, the graph with the bell curves. That’s a very important concept to understand. At first glance, it looks like those that get heart disease and those that don’t have very similar cholesterol levels, but that’s only at “normal” levels. To get an Optimal Cholesterol Level, one has to eat an exceedingly healthy diet. It’s worth it, though, since we’re not just talking life and death with heart disease, but life and the #1 cause of death. And I continue this streak of questioning the patronizing paternalism of authorities in the next video, Optimal Diet: Just Give it To Me Straight, Doc. - bit.ly/1RhH5cG - Why is there a reticence to provide the public with guidelines that will spare them from preventable disease and premature death?

Immune clue to preventing schizophrenia - BBC News
[ does diet and epigentics play a role, science knows that risk is higher if you have family case. big pharma would not be amused to hear that schizophrenic schizophrenia episodes could be reduced with an anti-inflammatory diet and active lifestyle. and anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID's) do not work at the same rate and have side effects (lower efficacy) ] Brain scans found an overactive immune system in patients as well as in those at high risk of schizophrenia. Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

Cholesterol and Alzheimer’s disease - YouTube
>> medical profession may come around: what is bad for your arteries and heart is bad for your brain as new research shows. cholesterol levels do play role/correlate with "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy"/beta-amyloid formation in the brain aka brain plaques. After all, its a build up of the arteries in our brain (brain consists mostly of fat) "Cerebral amyloid angiopathy is a neurological condition in which proteins called amyloid build up on the walls of the arteries in the brain. Brighton and Hove initiative tackles sugar addiction - BBC News
The "devastating harm" caused by having too much sugar is the focus of Brighton and Hove's first city-wide campaign as part of a drive to help reduce obesity. More than 300 children were admitted to hospital for teeth extraction in the city in 2012-13, while treating diet-related diseases costs £80m a year. The Sugar Smart City initiative has the backing of TV chef Jamie Oliver. He has asked food outlets in the city to adopt a voluntary 10p sugar levy on soft drinks with added sugar. The food campaigner has recently launched a voluntary levy on sugary drinks in his own restaurants, with the money raised going to Sustain, a charity working in health and food education. The money raised elsewhere in the city from the charge will be paid into the Children's Health Fund. Statistics have shown that one in four children in Brighton and Hove are already overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school. [...] "We don't know where it is [...]"

Gomez went on to criticise the tabloid press, who have spent years picking apart her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber as "vile". "I've been working since I was seven. Chemistry Nobel: Lindahl, Modrich and Sancar win for DNA repair - BBC News
Their work uncovered the mechanisms used by cells to repair damaged DNA - a fundamental process in living cells and important in cancer. [...] DNA is open to an onslaught of different phenomena that can generate defects in our genomes. UV radiation and molecules known as free radicals can cause damage. Furthermore, defects can arise when DNA is copied during cell division - a process that occurs millions of times each day in our bodies. "Cigarette smoke contains small reactive chemicals, which bind to the DNA and prevent it from being replicated properly - so they are mutagens. And once there is damage in the DNA this can cause diseases including cancer," said Prof Lindahl.

The NHS is on a one-way road to privatisation | Healthcare Professionals Network | The Guardian
[ 'founder' of NHS said NHS exists as long as people fight for it. true north ] [ rationing and creating Cinderella service ] The British public has not agreed to the destruction of the health service. It’s up to all of us to fight for it. [...] This translates into unlimited rationing. We are already seeing the rationing of hearing aids and cataracts. Devon CCG announced that all routine surgery would be restricted for obese patients and smokers. And routine shoulder surgery would be restricted for all patients. [...] Simon Stevens’ Five Year Forward View asked the government for an extra £8bn each year but the flip side of this is a further £22bn in efficiency savings. Never has the NHS undergone such a funding squeeze since its inception. Yet we spend significantly less on the NHS than the EU average and well below the likes of France, Germany and the Netherlands. Out of the G7, only Italy has the same level of spending.

NHS to begin denying people hearing aids for first time | Society | The Guardian
[ From January 2015 - bit.ly/13RgSyy - NHS accused of ‘cruel’ rationing of hearing aids ] [ NHS services, yet another example, is being rationed. Because budget is blown on chronic diseases caused mainly by diet and sedentary lifestyle. NHS CEO did say prevention is not addressed properly of how big the lever actually is long-term! ] The NHS will start denying people with hearing problems access to hearing aids for the first time from Thursday in a controversial move that critics claim will worsen sufferers’ social isolation. The GP-led NHS clinical commissioning group in North Staffordshire is taking the unprecedented step of ceasing to provide free hearing aids to mainly elderly people in its area with mild hearing loss. It is also making it harder for those with moderate hearing loss to get access to hearing aids by introducing new eligibility criteria against which patients will be judged.

Genetic clue to breast cancer relapses - BBC News
A research team from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge found that cancers that return were more likely to contain certain genes or combinations of genes. Targeting these genes with early treatments could be key, they said. The study is being presented at the European Cancer Congress in Vienna. In around one in five people with breast cancer, the disease will return - either to the same place as the original tumour or another part of the body.

30 stone at 13: meet the obese teenagers going under the knife | Society | The Guardian
More than 8,000 patients had weight-loss surgery in 2012-13, according to NHS figures – a 30-fold increase in just over a decade. They were not only middle-aged and long-term obese, but teenagers and young people, too: 570 under-25s had surgery between 2010 and 2013, according to the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry, and nearly 40% of these were “super obese”. Despite healthy eating edicts and government campaigns, they had, in their short lives, already advanced through the obesity categories – obese, severely obese, morbidly obese – and now, at super obese, were more than twice the weight they should be.

Is it HEALTHY to have Obese role models? Tess Munster - YouTube
fat shaming (does not help, ultimately) is not enlightenment (public education and personal self-education, reading up how you harm yourself and people from high up & ur parents have poisoned you since your inception (epigenetics, pollution)), medical intervention, helping someone when you were in their shoes and found help and or helped yourself. Only YOU YOURSELF can be of true interest about YOUR health, because it is your life, your health, your well being, happiness, your disposable income not to spend on medical care. Not food multinational conglomerates owned by a handful shareholders! Theyre not interested in ur health or the nations exploding health care spending. They are interested in maintaining the status quo. Dividends. Profits. Less regulation & oversight. Rising share price. Share buybacks. As child ur indoctrinated, by those people. Because they HOLD the power. There is no broccoli lobby. How abt frame lobby involvement in food pyramid as nanny state by food giants!?

Wandel der Trinkgewohnheiten - The European

Diabetes uses 10% of NHS drugs bill - BBC News
Diabetes now accounts for 10% of the NHS drugs bill in England, according to official figures. The Health and Social Care Information Centre report shows £869m was spent on drugs for the disease last year. It marks a sharp rise from the £514m being spent on the drugs a decade ago, when they accounted for just 6.6% of the prescriptions budget. The figures include drugs for both type-1 and type-2 diabetes, which affect 2.8 million people in England. It includes insulin, metformin and other anti-diabetic drugs. // &! Life Sciences, the two-year old health research group inside Google X, officially moved out of X and became its own standalone company under Alphabet. On the same day, Life Sciences announced a new deal with DexCom, a San Diego, Calif. firm that builds continuous glucose monitors for diabetics. Obesity is an incurable disease. So why is the government intent on punishing sufferers? | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
Fat-shaming is worse than useless. David Cameron points his finger at the afflicted, but food manufacturers and advertisers are the real culprits. s overeating more addictive than crack cocaine? It’s hard to compare addiction rates, or to produce a clear definition that holds true across all substances and behaviours. But consider this crude contrast: of people who use crack cocaine, 10%-20% become addicted to it; across a nine-year study of 176,000 obese people, 98.3% of the men and 97.8% of the women failed to return to a healthy weight. Once extreme overeating begins, it appears to be almost impossible to stop. [...] seek out a range of highly palatable, energy-dense foods, of the kind with which we are now surrounded. [...] [ abuse food ] comfort eating [ handling stress, as is binge drinking on the Fridays and Weekends and your glass of wine every evening during the week ] [ IT IS ABOUT PREVENTION AND ENVIRONMENT HAS TO CHANGE! ] [ 10% NHS Budget is spend on diabetes treatment ]

Obesity: 'Slim chance' of return to normal weight - BBC News
[ its the environment & addiction component, stupid ] For severe obesity, shedding excess weight in a year is even more unlikely, a study of UK health records concluded. [...] [S]trategies for helping obese patients are failing. A team from King's College London is calling for "wider-reaching public health policies" to prevent people becoming obese in the first place. Lead researcher Dr Alison Fildes said the main treatment options offered to obese people in the UK - weight management programmes via their GP - were not working for the vast majority. "Treatment needs to focus on stopping people gaining more weight and maintaining even small levels of weight loss," she said. "Current strategies that focus on cutting calories and boosting physical activity aren't working for most patients to achieve weight loss and maintain that. "The greatest opportunity for fighting the obesity epidemic might be in public health policies to prevent it in the first place at a population level."

A Liverpool health experiment which just might save the NHS - BBC News
[ a bomb oozing, not exploding, just getting bigger & bigger & each passing year not tackling the causes - harder to resolve. ] True to form, the wise men at the top of the NHS in their headquarters in Leeds and Liverpool have identified the source of their pain: it's us. We are victims of our own lifestyle choices, demographically ever more numerous, and culturally driven by untameable expectations. We drink too much, we are too fat, we smoke, and we do not exercise and the average age of the population is increasing. The pressure is intolerable. A morning at A&E or a GP's surgery is like a scene from The Day of the Triffids. No power on earth could save us from ourselves and we are lucky to live as long as we do. [...] Unless we change the way we do things, the NHS in England will die. Tax sugary drinks by 20%, say doctors - BBC News
[health care budget bomb that WILL explode, is already oozing ] An extra 20% tax on sugary drinks should be introduced to tackle the obesity crisis, the British Medical Association says. It estimates poor diets are causing around 70,000 premature deaths each year. In a major report on unhealthy diets, the body called for the extra money raised to be used to subsidise fresh fruit and vegetables. [...] "We're looking at 30% of the UK population being obese by the year 2030, a large extent of that is due to the amount of sugar we're actually consuming without realising. "The biggest problem is a lot of us are unaware of the amount of sugar we are consuming on a day-to-day basis."
'production and consumption (of what types of food) is the key to most things that is on our mind as society - climate change, health & well being, income, food, - are all related.' // livestock farming is 2nd biggest contributor to CO2 emissions (global warming), what we put in our mouths and whether we are active or sedentary determines our happiness, well being and health and in what way we grow old (sick and kept alive) or actually enjoying your old age. // food industry has no shared economic interest and is not a stakeholder because it is a rootless corporate conglomerate that evades taxation and lobbies for subsidies and also thus evades possible prosecution when wrongdoing/negligence is clear, oversight and transparency - exploits unsustainable - money (or stored value in fiat 'container') doesnt have 2 deal with ecological/environmental disaster & economic damage &! personal identity social status = meat consumption! + marketing + peer pressure

The Treasury, the Budget and the NHS - BBC News
[Cost 4 public health care & services are set-up 2 explode bc of sick population. NHS needs 2be funded by Alcohol, Sugar, Tobacco & animal products tax! (phased in) & Subsidize together with companies an employee wellbing-active lifestyle voucher system that also includes family! As well as subsidize fruit & vegetable prices. & a national years long multi-media campaign & PE@School ] The big decisions on financing the NHS over the next few years are likely to come in the autumn with the departmental spending review. Beyond a restatement of the commitment to an extra £8 billion in 2020 [...] detailed analysis of the financial needs of the NHS in England is underway. Department of Health and Treasury officials are poring over projections for health demand. They need to be sure that the £8 billion identified by NHS chiefs is realistic. That figure was reached after assuming highly ambitious efficiency savings of £22 billion by 2020. Ministers want to be assured that figure is achievable.

Heart disease plus diabetes can knock more than a decade off your life | Society | The Guardian
“An individual in their 60s who has both conditions [diabetes and heart disease] has an average reduction in life expectancy of about 15 years.” Men of 60 with any two of the cardiometabolic conditions studied lost 12 years of life on average. The lifespan of those with all three conditions was reduced by 14 years. For women aged 60, the corresponding estimates were 13 years and 16 years of reduced life expectancy. The effects were even more dramatic at younger ages. Men of 40 with all three conditions could expect to have their life cut short by 23 years and women by 20 years. // - Old before your time. IN THE WESTERN & TODAYS DEVELOPING WORLD. The Complete Skinny on Obesity - YouTube
chronic disease are 75% of health care expenditure in western world & developing world! developing countries have bigger problem w obesity & metabolic syndrome than infections like cholera/tb // min13 (Structure of Sugar) fructose is equal 2 alcohol. glucose is metabolized by every organ in the body. even if you don't consume glucose, your body will make it. fructose can only metabolized by the liver. you are overloading your liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). fructose is a liver toxin (liver fat). fructose and alcohol is metabolized into fat! alcohol and fructose can be both nutrients, but they can also be addictive // min 20 Leptin resistance. Insulin turns sugars into fat. western diet (dietary composition, omnivore, fast & processed food) encourage body 2 up the production of insulin (sugar 2 fat) till the ceiling is reached (Pancreatitis -> diabetes). increased insulin response (from diet composition) blocks leptin-to-brain signal (feeling of full) &is addictive over time
