We Underestimate Tesla
Today the Powerwall and Supercharger network support the sale of Tesla cars. Tomorrow, we may see them feeding electric cars beyond Tesla: BMWs, Toyotas, Ubers, Chevy Bolts and others. The same way Amazon has turned its fulfillment centers into a revenue generator, Tesla could turn the Powerwall and Supercharger into a profit center by selling access to other car companies.

Plastic bottle litter on beaches up 43%, conservationists say
Conservationists say they found 160 plastic bottles for every mile of UK coastline cleaned last year.
The Marine Conservation Society said more than 8,000 bottles were picked up during its Great British Beach Clean Up in September, up 43% on 2014.
It wants deposit return schemes, which give money back to people who return empty bottles, to encourage recycling.
More than 6,000 volunteers collected and recorded litter along 340 beaches across the UK.
The MCS said putting a charge on the bottles of up to 20p, which gets refunded when they are returned, would change behaviour, and called for the UK government to explore the potential of such a scheme.

Ineos warns Scotland will pass up the chance of an economic lifeline if fracking is banned (From Herald Scotland)
NICOLA Sturgeon has been warned against passing up a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise the Scottish economy after she admitted she is “highly sceptical” about fracking. One of the country’s largest firms intervened after the First Minister revealed her personal view in a bid to counter claims that the SNP is preparing to give the controversial gas extraction method the green light after the Holyrood elections. Ineos, which owns the sprawling Grangemouth petrochemical plant and owns fracking exploration licences for large swathes of central Scotland, said it believed shale gas could become “another Scottish success story like the North Sea” and “pick up the slack” of declining offshore reserves.

Britain heading for power cuts next winter, say 60 local authorities | Business | The Guardian
bit.ly/1TOwjhT &! A group representing 60 local authorities has warned that recent closures of large power stations have left Britain heading for power cuts next winter, despite assurances to the contrary from the government. [...] National Grid needed to act immediately to fill the supply gap by sending out new contracts for at least 2,500 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity – enough to power 2.5m homes. The alliance wants ministers to reconsider the level of carbon taxes, saying this is one of the key reasons why so many coal-fired power stations are being shut down early. [...] In recent years, coal, nuclear and gas-fired plants have been shut because of low prices, high operating costs or old age. Windfarms have been erected and new nuclear facilities promised but energy companies say gas plants cannot be built without higher subsidies. //&! bit.ly/1MpvhlE - UK doesn not meet 15% of EU renewables target, but cuts subsidies for renewables, duh! &! bit.ly/1sL8Kty

IEA warns consumers of spike in oil prices - BBC News
[ Saudie's playing game of who has the deepest pockets against USA and Canada ] The International Energy Agency (IEA) is warning consumers not to let cheap oil lull them into a false sense of security amid forecasts of a price spike by 2021. In a report, the IEA said it expects prices to start recovering in 2017. But it forecasts that will be followed by a sharp jump in price as supply shrinks following under-investment by struggling producers.

this is akin to taking plaster to fix a crumbling high rise: limiting the emissions and putting cost on emissions for one industry, seen as heavies polluter in public eye ... while livestock industry is biggest +50% of them all. // what is needed is a carbon tax that also includes environmental and ecological cost (ie deforestation, water pollution from pig waste - livestock farming) and if we are already there, what about antibiotic-resistance? 'BPA-free' plastic accelerates embryonic development, disrupts reproductive system in zebrafish : science
Yeah. You know why? Because we replaced BPA with another plasticizing compound that does the exact same thing. BPS, the BPA replacement chemical, is structurally very similar to BPA and, therefore, we shouldn't be shocked when it exerts a similar impact on the reproductive system. Because we need the plasticizers to serve a particular function in the production of plastics, they are relegated to a fairly particular type of chemical structure. This means there all pretty likely to look the same and act the same. That is, as weak estrogens.

The Chemical in Cupcake Wrappers and Cookware Might Be Causing Cancer | Mother Jones
C8 is in a chemical family called PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals)—the same water- and stain-proofing class of chemicals used to make rain gear, pizza box and popcorn bag liners, stainproof upholstery treatments, and those waxy slips that hold pastries at cafes. Dozens of studies have linked PFCs to all sorts of health problems, from kidney and testicular cancer to increased risk of miscarriages. (3M phased out the chemical from production in 2002 due to potential health hazards.) [...] PFC contamination may not be isolated to the Ohio Valley. According to an Environmental Working Group (EWG) report that uses recent EPA data, C8 has been found in the drinking water in 94 counties serving more than 6 million Americans. (An interactive version of this map is available here.) [...] The EPA is in the process of investigating C8's health effects; in the meantime, it has set voluntary C8 safety standards to be used by utility companies.

The health implications of the diesel scandal - BBC News
[ http://www.spiegel.de/thema/abgasaffaere_bei_volkswagen/ ] The diesel scandal started as a worry for car owners. Yet, according to Prof Alistair Lewis, an air pollution expert at the University of York, "it is overwhelmingly a health story". The costs of not doing more to tackle air pollution can be measured in "thousands of deaths and billions of pounds, all passed on to the taxpayer", he says. Fed chief Yellen says US rate rise still likely this year - BBC News
The US remains "on track" for an interest rate rise this year, Federal Reserve chief Janet Yellen has said. The central bank head said as long as inflation was stable and the US economy was strong enough to boost jobs, the conditions would be right for a rise. Despite expectations of a rise this month, the Fed held rates, in part due to fears about global economic growth. Ms Yellen, speaking at the University of Massachusetts, said US economic prospects "generally appear solid". Speaking a week after the Fed delayed that long-anticipated hike, she said she and other policymakers did not expect recent global economic and financial market developments to significantly affect the central bank's policy. Much recent inflationary weakness is due to special and likely temporary factors, such as a strong dollar and low oil prices, she said. //&! http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2015-09-25/janet-yellen-s-flip-flop-confuses-markets

How plunging oil prices have created a volatile new force in the global economy | Business | The Guardian
The new Saudi strategy has caused ripples across the world, knocking off pricey drilling operations everywhere from the Arctic to South America. More broadly, lower energy prices have delivered a blow to oil-dependent nations, pressuring state-run oil firms, causing a currency slump in Nigeria, and contributing to major economic contractions in Venezuela and Russia. Some experts also say that the Saudis are hoping to cut off the fracking boom at its knees. If they’d allowed prices to stay high, US production would have continued to grow rapidly.
