Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

Since 2010, rents have risen by 40%, and eviction rates have risen by 38%—two rapid changes that have had very visual consequences all across the city. Much of SoMa, for instance, looks like an elephant graveyard. Sidewalks look like the surface of the moon; alleys are littered with broken glass; and streets are strewn with sleeping persons and human shit. All of this can be observed from in the shade of the brand-new office buildings and luxury condos that now line the streets everywhere east of 4th Street. [...] those who move to San Francisco and don’t engage with the community dilute and adulterate San Francisco’s sense of character.

Apple's “Special Event” was underwhelming, but that's a good thing
I felt less bad for my younger, archiving self than I did for Apple. The parts of our lives we wanted instinctively to endure became ink leaked onto pulp, not files housed in silicon. Paper volumes we still house on oft-dusted bookshelves. It was the technology that Apple designed to usher us into the great, digital future that got thrown out – or, if the technology was lucky, encased inside a dust cover and forgotten about for decades. Apple, in time, learned not only to live with the disposability of digital architecture, but to profit from it... // [ the pendulum will swing back again, on a personal level, but for distribution, digital is so much better! Vlogger guidelines published by advertising committee - BBC News
New guidelines for video bloggers who enter marketing relationships with brands have been published. The rules encourage "vloggers" to label advertising content and explain when they have been asked to feature products sent to them by companies. The Committee of Advertising Practice (Cap) has issued its first guidance since a landmark Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling last year. The ASA said several vlogs praising Oreo biscuits were not clearly marked.

Banner “Fraud” Doesn’t Matter | Hacker News
bit.ly/1Jb27sI "A Message from brand marketers to publishers [...] We use banners as little billboards now. We use them strategically as incredibly cheap repeat impressions for brand awareness. We know many people don’t see them, we know most people don’t see them. Thats okay. We use them accordingly & the cost has been adjusted down to make them a perfectly great buy even though most people dont see them. [...] It’s an indicator to us that you don’t get this by the fact you’re still always talking about clickthrough, which was kind of BS when you first sold it to us twenty years ago, and doubly the case now." [ CPM will go lower, fundamentals point in that direction, Social Media & other future forms of advertising will fill in the lower CPM rates overall. Thus pressuring business models reliant on pageviews even more 2 increase pageviews as the revenue average per pageview declines. Snapchat Solicits Longer Content By Ditching Tap-And-Hold-To-Watch | TechCrunch
bit.ly/1NAmQWu "he's showing that he can make practical decisions that benefit the Snapchat users, even if it means losing something that was fundamental to Snapchat's product itself." // But doesn't he give up the 'attention grab/focus' feature for long-form content and thus also loosing share of the snacking %' !!?? long-term we will see what Snapchat will become and be eventually worth. Because it won't be a Facebook. It could turn out to be a Twitter with problems in monetisation (turning a profit and meeting growth stage investors expectations - current valuation ... at IPO and post-IPO one, two years on.) Gary might be right about putting yourself out of business than letting the other guys do it for you. But Snapchat (Mr Spiegel) may have been forced to abandon its 'differentiation' in order to meet valuation expectations by appealing to a broader potential user base to use it more, like to read news & consumer other types of content than Snapchats ( P2P or B2C versions ).

"The social aggregator is a terrible business model." : TheoryOfReddit
If you charge users up front to use your service, all things being equal, they are more likely to use one that is free, especially if an up-and-coming one offers something new and compelling. If you charge your users by selling their information and views to advertisers, then your service is beholden to those parties that buy the information and views, and this results in motivations that take priority to the user experience. For these reasons, starting with VC funding is a poison pill for social aggregators, as the profit pressure runs contrary to the conditions and patience necessary for community building and early growth. // https://hubski.com/pub?id=219234

The Facebook Effect (On Real Estate Prices) | TechCrunch
The Wall Street Journal had a story on this yesterday: space is so tight that tech companies are paying north of $90 a square foot in Mountain View. Those are Manhattan skyscraper prices for 1980s-era suburban office parks. It is like running the entire industry on the physical equivalent of MS-DOS. You can either scale the physical infrastructure of the region or you can move the jobs. I favor doing both, but it seems obvious that the world is on an inexorable path towards mass urbanization and that the type of creative and collaborative work done in the industry today favors density. The younger generation in tech understands that in a knowledge-based economy, the value of what is created in Silicon Valley both economically and culturally is in the network. It depends upon who we can bring and include here — not in physical assets like a piece of land or a home. [...] elastic housing supply is supportive of economic growth, especially urban/metropolitan areas of dense eco activity

Epoxy partners with top MCNs to makes multi-platform content management less of a pain | PandoDaily
The emergence of tools like Epoxy couldn’t have come at a better time for MCNs and the creators they represent. While YouTube has continued to grow in reach, the video giant’s relationship with its stars has deteriorated rapidly. Many prominent voices in the community have questioned the fairness of the revenue splits available on the platform, as well as the lack of sales support and sophisticated content management tools. The result of this discontent has been a general belief that it’s no longer enough to build a “YouTube business,” but rather that it’s crucial to build a multi-platform video business with YouTube as just one aspect – typically the top-of-funnel audience acquisition component.

Sure Stripe has more cash, but does it have a path to exit? | PandoDaily
The problem with raising capital at nosebleed valuations is that the number of scenarios under which a positive outcome is possible becomes greatly diminished. By raising at $3.5 billion, Stripe, [... and Investors ...] — are betting that the company can exit at or above $7 billion. That’s a steep price and largely eliminates acquisition as an option. The list of potential acquirers is likely limited to Facebook, Google, Apple, eBay, Amazon, and Alibaba in the tech sector. On the financial side, there are the large banks and credit card companies. But it’s hard to see anyone ponying up $7 billion to acquire Stripe, which has yet to prove that it has a sustainable business or attractive margins. [...] Not every round requires a doubling valuation, and in this case, it may turn out that everyone involved would be better if more modesty was applied. The End of Big Twitter | Hacker News
Twitter is an optimal conduit for narcissism, trolling, harassment, mobbing, astroturfing, demagoguery, and manufacturing consent. The medium shapes the discourse, and Twitter encourages and amplifies bad behavior while inhibiting intelligent and thoughtful conversation. Even if it didn't architecturally push you toward this behavior the scale alone enables every bad behavior you would expect if you scaled a single IRC channel up to a billion people. There is no way to "fix" this. It is its nature. It is a technology that exists because it makes a few people a ton of money and gives regular people a dopamine tweak along with heaps of suffering. It is the online equivalent of a crackhouse. [...] Platform starts, intelligent, well-spoken early adopters sign on. Fast forward 7-8 years. Platform is overrun by normal people. Cultural Realities Of Latin American Entrepreneurship | TechCrunch
// In Latin America, the fundamental cultural impediment to creating a sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystem is lack of individual risk-taking. While this is true at the entrepreneurial level, it is not a crucial element due to other factors compensating – primarily the attraction of the Silicon Valley lifestyle. However, this is not true in the investor layer, and thus a crucial piece of the infrastructure – the post-startup financing – is severely underdeveloped. The cultural factors here are clear: lack of comfort with technology, group decision-making, long decision-making cycles, desire for control and severe discomfort with failure result in an anemic investment community.

Amazon Pounces On Twitch After Google Balks Due To Antitrust Concerns
Google was unable to close the deal, because it was concerned about potential antitrust issues that could have come with the acquisition. Facebook is bad for you: Get a life! | The Economist
>> People posting only the best things in their life. << The Economist reported in 2013 that people tend to grow more depressed the more time they spend on Facebook after volunteers in a University of Michigan study had their activities and emotions tracked by submitting reports about both five times every day for two weeks. The finding: people who spent more time on Facebook were more depressed than those who didn’t. “A volunteer’s sex had no influence on these findings; nor did the size of his (or her) social network, his stated motivation for using Facebook, his level of loneliness or depression or his self-esteem,” the Economist said in its report. “[Study organizers] Dr Kross and Dr Verduyn therefore conclude that, rather than enhancing well-being, Facebook undermines it.” ( source http://pando.com/2014/06/17/facebooks-slingshot-brings-some-authenticity-to-the-worlds-most-disingenuous-social-network/ )

eBay Shrugged: Pierre Omidyar believes there should be no philanthropy without profit | PandoDaily
Pierre Omidyar. The role of Omidyar Network in so many major events of the past week — helping elect India’s ultranationalist leader Narendra Modi; co-funding Ukraine regime-change NGOs with USAID, resulting in a deadly civil war and Monday’s election of Ukrainian billionaire oligarch Petro Poroshenko; and now, this week’s first-ever sit-down TV interview with Edward Snowden, through an arrangement between NBC News and Pierre Omidyar’s First Look Media — shows how these contradictions are coming to the fore, and shaping our world. [...] Muhammad Yunus failed to dissuade Omidyar: "Let them make money—but why do you want to make money off the poor people?” [...] “Omidyar views the fund as a way of testing his theories about commercializing the sector. ‘It’s really the demonstration impact I’m looking for, primarily,’ he said.” << Billionaires Playground.
+ http://www.femalepressure.net/fempress.html

Staying in someones place is very different than a hotel. a hotel is generic. every AirBnB is different. Bertelsmann Invests in YouTube Fashion Network StyleHaul - Peter Kafka - News - AllThingsD
StyleHaul is one of several YouTube-focused video networks that have sprung up in recent years that produce their own content and aggregate many clips by amateurs and semi-professionals, as well. That’s the technique, for instance, that Machinima has used to generate billions of views for its videogame clips. It’s not a coincidence that Machinima CEO Allen DeBevoise is a StyleHaul investor. Many of these “multi-channel networks” (terrible name, but it might stick) are now also looking to build businesses outside of YouTube, and StyleHaul is on that path, too. Horbaczewski says she’ll use the money to build out her direct-sales team, and to build her own destination site; earlier this week, she hired former Yahoo executive Alvin Fong as her COO. At a minimum, you can see the investment as another sign that lots of big-media players are trying to get their heads around YouTube as well as lay some bets on the site.

Disney Ponders the Biggest Big Media YouTube Bet Yet: Buying Maker Studios | Re/code
But that enthusiasm for YouTube investments has been tempered in the last year, as big players on Google’s video site have complained that they don’t make enough money there — either because YouTube’s ads aren’t lucrative enough, or because YouTube takes a big chunk of those dollars via revenue sharing deals, or both. Many big YouTube networks, such as Maker, are trying to find ways to make money outside of YouTube by distributing their videos to other hubs, including Microsoft’s Xbox, as well as building their own properties. And they are also trying to strike “integration” deals that don’t require them to share revenue with YouTube; Maker has recently signed what it says is a significant integration deal with Pepsi.

Warner Bros. Gets Ready to Bet on YouTube With a Machinima Investment | Re/code
Machinima’s long road for this round is partly a reflection of its own problems — several of the company’s top executives have left in the last year, it has had multiple layoff rounds, and is looking for a replacement for CEO and founder Allen DeBevoise — and may also be related to issues many video producers are having as they try to make money on YouTube. Even companies that garner lots of eyeballs on the world’s biggest video site — and Machinima says it generates billions of views a month — have had a hard time turning that into a profitable business, because ad rates are low and much of the money they do make goes back to YouTube.

Don’t Expect Facebook’s WhatsApp to Make Any Real Money for Years | Re/code
“By being a part of Facebook, it makes it so that [WhatsApp] can focus for the next five years or so purely on connecting more people,” Zuckerberg said. Were Facebook not to have acquired WhatsApp, he continued, the pressure would have increased on WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum to eventually “focus more on revenue models” and monetization over the near term, rather than on the company’s continued growth. [...] “I think by itself, WhatsApp is worth more than $19 billion. It’s hard to make that case today because they have so little revenue, but look at the messaging apps already out there,” Zuckerberg said, pointing to existing competitors like KakaoTalk, WeChat and Line, which are already monetizing (in some cases, quite successfully). [...] 70 percent of those returning to the app on a daily basis. Those levels of engagement are unheard of in Internet circles, and it’s why Zuckerberg and company were so taken by the fast-growing mobile app.

Reddit Is Big, Growing, and (Maybe) Turning Ever-More Inward - Robinson Meyer - The Atlantic
via http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1v4vik/reddit_is_big_growing_and_maybe_turning_evermore/ [...] This is an interesting article I found, and implies that reddit may be, rather than a "sharing site," more of "a kind of earnest Internet town hall." I personally like the idea, really. Whereas facebook is mindless "look at this!" reddit, for all of its flaws and circlejerks, does occasionally have really good discussion and debate that facebook and social media sites just, well, lack. I just thought that was interesting, I've never posted here before so hopefully this is enough elaboration and you find the article interesting. [....] Shareaholic’s statistics indicate a changing role for Reddit: The site is perhaps becoming more of an object of sustained attention, and less of a interesting-link clearinghouse. (Reddit darlings like image-sharing site Imgur, meanwhile, now boast their own communities—Imgur’s is now larger than Reddit.)

Do Network Effects Span Geographies?
Was it Facebooks product innovation and design and approach?
Or was it the Network effect that let go growth wild?

Twitter, SXSW, and Building a 21st Century Business - Umair Haque - Harvard Business Review
Openness as a survival strategy. I asked Ev about why Twitter's been focused on openness, and his response was that it's a "survival strategy." New ideas, new concepts, new applications — all flow to open organizations. That's a great way to express the point that for next-gen organizations, openness is now table stakes: fail at it, and you're not even in the game.

Organizing for experimentation. "Why don't you guys have a business model?" That was the essence of my first question — and the response was about experimentation. Though many organizations want to experiment, they can't — because they're not built to. Ev gave a blow-by-blow description of how Twitter organizes for experimentation, by creating modular teams that rapidly iterate to solve tough problems. That's what 21st century organizations look like: networks, not pyramids.
