Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Poultry deregulation plans risk bringing back dark days of food scares. History shows problems start when food companies police themselves: think salmonella, BSE, foot and mouth, swine flu - bit.ly/1UON3ai - Privatisation move! Austerity. Self-regulation.

Demand for Meat Is Driving Water Shortages Affecting 4 Billion People | TakePart
Climate change, population growth, and skyrocketing meat consumption is making water scarce for two-thirds of the world’s population. 'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Bacteria that resist 'last antibiotic' found in UK - BBC News
[ over 80% of antibiotic use - livestock farming. also use of colistin. self-regulated. ] Bacteria that resist the most common antibiotic of last resort - colistin - have been discovered in the UK. Officials say the threat to human health is low, but is under ongoing review. Scientists warned the world was on the cusp of a post-antibiotic era when such resistance was discovered in China last month. Now checks have discovered the same resistance on three farms and in samples of human infections. [...] Colistin-resistance was discovered in fifteen of them, including samples of Salmonella and E. Coli. [...] The DNA that gives bacteria resistance to colistin - the mcr-1 gene - can spread rapidly between species. The concern is that colistin-resistance will now find its way into other superbugs to create infections that doctors cannot treat. //&! youtu.be/M2xZBngTIas //&! bit.ly/1O5oHWa //&! bit.ly/1MW3FYW //&! bbc.in/1PkB6G9 //&! 50-50 chance to salvage situation - bit.ly/1Zmx8Qg

Why Cancer Research Has Stalled - T. Colin Campbell
But such conclusions fail to explain changes in the rates of cancer over time, or the wide variation in cancer prevalence between different human populations. They are flawed for a very fundamental reason: they assume that most types of cancer are caused by DNA mutations. This is the mutation theory of cancer. It serves as a fundamental explanation of cancer development and thus is a central focus of cancer research and clinical practice. [...] I disagree with this theory. I suggest that failing to question the mutation theory of cancer is the underlying scientific reason the War on Cancer is not being won. A nutritional theory of cancer .... Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

Part II: Is the Government fulfilling its role in the fight against cancer?
The scale of the challenge is apparent. I think we should be as bold and ambitious as possible: scientists, clinicians, patients, the general public and politicians all working together for a single goal: to eliminate cancer within a generation, and Britain at the forefront of this. [...] Patient experience has to be prioritised and this is difficult when NHS cancer services are under unprecedented pressure and the Government far too often provides contradictory messages. The Department of Health must provide the NHS with the resources and the long-term, holistic stability to allow Trusts to invest in state-of-the-art equipment. The NHS needs to emphasise prevention and early detection too, but the risk is that under greater financial and workforce pressure, cancer services will be forced to firefight.

- SPIEGEL ONLINE

Five research papers that revolutionised health - BBC News
Richard Doll was the British statistician working for the Medical Research Council who published a ground-breaking paper in the British Medical Journal in 1950 that concluded there was "a real association between carcinoma of the lung and smoking". He looked at the incidence of smoking and lung cancer in a large number of patients and compared their experience with people who had different cancers - what scientists call a control group. His findings led him to give up smoking. But despite many subsequent studies that have supported the connection, the tobacco industry has not accepted the research.

Britain's water crisis | Nick Davies | Environment | The Guardian
The immediate cause of the early drying out at the source of the Ouse was simply that there was not enough water in the underground aquifer on which it feeds. But that turns out to be part of something bigger. In March 2013, the local branch of the Environment Agency reported that, depending on conditions, there are now years when they can extract water from the Ouse on no more than 94 days. For the rest of the year, abstractors can use water that has been stored during the wet months in the big reservoir at Ardingly, and they can pump up water through boreholes sunk into the underground aquifers. This in turn reduces the amount of water that bubbles up into the river and its tributaries. The Environment Agency has stopped issuing new abstraction licences for the river. Meanwhile, during the summer months, nearly half of what we like to describe as a river is, in fact, recycled waste water and sewage. [...] [south-east and south] “serious water stress”

WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

Study supports cancer link with height - BBC News
nutritionfacts.org //Its results found that for every extra 10cm (4in) of height, when fully grown, the risk of developing cancer increased by 18% in women and 11% in men. But experts said the study did not take into account many risk factors and that tall people should not be worried. To reduce risk of cancer, the most important things to do are: give up smoking, cut down on alcohol, adopt a healthy diet and lifestyle. [ and its not about more cells as noted by one doc, its about the bigger need of caloric intake, and thus bigger intake of sick food, cancer food, processed food, ... thus bigger load on the system: insulin response, IGF-1 load bigger, long-term = higher risk. its comparable with obese people are at higher risk because they eat more sick food, even if you take into account the sick status they are in vs tall person with normal weight. Wasser: Mineralwasser, Leitungswasser - Welches ist am besten? - SPIEGEL ONLINE

BBC News - Breastfeeding problems linked to injection after birth
The drug ergotmetrine is offered to mothers to speed up the delivery of the placenta. But a Swansea University study of 288 women found those given the jab were more likely to report pain or difficulties when breastfeeding. The mothers were also less likely to continue breastfeeding past two weeks. The report concluded the injection of the drug may interfere with natural hormones which support the breastfeeding process. [...] Co-author Dr Sue Jordan explained the injection might interfere with the body's natural responses to hormones known as oxytocin and prolactin, which regulate the production of milk. She called for further research to explore the options for new mothers to "understand the balance between protecting women from excessive blood loss and giving them the strongest chance of breastfeeding their baby".

Why Big Food is the Big Tobacco of the 21st century | AL.com
never buy food that is advertised/got a ad budget assigned by a corp. On the one hand you subsidize ags and corps of food / chains and giants. and on the other hand you put money into healthcare ie UK NHS - to fix the outcome = poor health.
