I talked to maybe 20 randomly hailed UberX and Lyft drivers between November and March. All but one were male immigrants, primarily from Africa, South Asia and the Middle East, and most spoke heavily accented English. It's a completely different group from the drivers I'm able to get in touch with through Uberpeople.net, the demographics of which I'd call "Reddit-ish." All the immigrant drivers who spoke to me took a lot of pride in providing excellent service. Few had been Uber drivers for more than a month or two. Many were helping support multiple family members, most had at least one other job and all worked hours that would reduce me to a weeping wreck in a month. Peter Thiel on why Airbnb should be valued way higher than Uber… and why it’s not | PandoDaily
Rather than explaining how two companies locked in such a battle could possibly justify nearly $2 billion in collected investment and sky high valuations, he made the point that Airbnb in contrast is wildly undervalued at least relative to Uber. Thiel is also an investor in Airbnb– yet another darling of the sharing economy, valued at a “mere” $10 billion compared to Uber’s $18 billion. Unlike Uber and Lyft, Thiel argued, there is no obvious competitor to Airbnb. That in and of itself makes it a more valuable company because of the distraction and profit erosion that he describes throughout his book. So why doesn’t the market reflect that thinking? Thiel gave an amusing answer to that too: VCs like to invest in things they like to use. VCs love getting in black town cars, but they typically stay in five star hotels. Fewer still open up their homes to strangers for extra cash. Uber gets a “yeah! I like this one!” valuation boost.

But drivers are none too pleased, arguing that the bargain pricing is threatening their ability to make a living via the service. It was $2.50 a mile when I started a year-and-a-half ago, and now we are at $1.10 a mile. You can’t make a living off of that.” John Dabbah, another driver, echoed these frustrations, saying, “At the beginning, it was $2.50 a mile. People, they financed cars, they bought cars. They made money at the beginning. Now they are dropping the price day after day without even asking the driver.”

Commentary: Uber’s $18.2B Valuation Is a Head Scratcher - Digits - WSJ
That’s a worthy mission, but the wrinkle is that Uber is entering what is essentially a frictionless market (for both drivers and riders) in which its services are a commodity. The company’s phenomenal growth so far (we don’t know the actual numbers, but doubling in revenue every 6 months is what Kalanick claims) has been built on the back of low-hanging fruit — expansion into new cities, particularly where taxi availability is low — and levels of dissatisfaction among taxi drivers that may be temporal. (When I asked drivers who had a particular loyalty to Lyft why they liked the company, they said they felt it treated them better in general.) In both respects, Uber’s growth is reminiscent of Groupon, and we know what happened to them.
