Inequality driving 'deaths of despair' - BBC News
may 2019 by asterisk2a
there is income inequality
there is health inequality (air)
there is political inequality, your voice only heard when you have money to donate and can pay lobbyists.
>> electoral reform (1), limit lobby influence and party donations (2), citizens assembly, devolution might have failed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YmdzgJAMxk
Widening inequalities in pay, health and opportunities in the UK are undermining trust in democracy, says an Institute for Fiscal Studies report. [...] The think tank warns of runaway incomes for high earners but rises in "deaths of despair", such as from addiction and suicide, among the poorest.
It warns of risks to "centre-ground" politics from stagnating pay and divides in health and education.
The report says such widening gaps are "making a mockery of democracy".
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), one of the country's leading research institutes, is launching what it says is the UK's biggest analysis of inequality.
That will be chaired by Nobel Prize-winning economist Prof Sir Angus Deaton.

Here's Why All Pension Funds Are Doomed, Doomed, Doomed
july 2016 by asterisk2a
Given that both The Economist and The Wall Street Journal have covered the impossibility of pension funds achieving their expected returns, this reality cannot be a surprise to anyone in a leadership role. [...] Here's problem #1 in a nutshell: the average public pension fund still expects to earn an average annual return of 7.69%, year after year, decade after decade.
This is roughly triple the nominal (not adjusted for inflation) yield on a 30-year Treasury bond (about 2.65%). The only way any fund manager can earn 7.7% or more in a low-yield environment is to make extremely high risk bets that consistently pay off. //&! Konzept gegen Wohnungsnot: Höher, enger, dichter
march 2016 by asterisk2a
[... Active change in Planning Laws to allow new types of developments ... ] Die Bundesregierung unterstützt Nachverdichtung, indem sie Kommunen zum Beispiel mehr Spielräume für die Bebauung von Innenstadtflächen einräumt.

Full-time work is no bar to poverty in UK, report says | Society | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Despite at least one adult working full time, millions of households cannot make ends meet, Joseph Rowntree Foundation reports [...] Millions of households struggle to make ends meet even though they include at least one adult in full-time work, according to a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). Living standards have declined since 2008 despite the economy’s return to growth, the anti-poverty charity said, warning that families with children are at particular risk of a life in poverty. [...] The MIS is determined by asking members of the public to define what is needed to “live to an adequate level”. The threshold is £16,850 for a single person, £25,600 for a lone parent with one child and £36,060 for a single breadwinner with two children. [...] Approximately 11.6 million people in the UK live below the MIS, [...] An improving economy alone is not guaranteed to reverse this rise.” [...] [ no economic security in this recovery! ]

Scientists: air pollution led to more than 5.5 million premature deaths in 2013 | Environment | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
“Air pollution is the fourth-highest risk factor for death globally and by far the leading environmental risk factor for disease,” said Michael Brauer, a researcher from the University of British Columbia. Brauer said air pollution contributed to heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, bronchitis, emphysema and acute infections. He and his colleagues compared the problem in Asia to the conditions under centuries of industrial revolution in the US and Europe: massive economic growth smothered by clouds of toxic matter in the air. [... COAL ...] “Even in the most clean scenario in 2030,” Ma said, China’s growing and ageing population will still suffer 990,000 to 1.3 million deaths a year.

Next week's junior doctor strike on - BBC News
february 2016 by asterisk2a
[ after they came back on the table from the first strike and another strike as been called off during negotiation ] Next week's strike by junior doctors in England will go ahead as talks with the government have failed to reach a solution - but union leaders say medics will provide emergency cover. [...] BMA junior doctor leader Dr Johann Malawana said despite some "good progress" the union had been left no choice but to announce the stoppage would take place. He accused the government of taking an "entrenched" position by insisting the extra pay doctors get for working on a Saturday is cut. [ Tories redefine WEEKEND, as they did with poverty, and else ] Dr Malawana said: "What we are asking for is fair and affordable recognition of unsocial hours."

january 2016 by asterisk2a
Hepatologists in Southampton are seeing more young, middle-class and female alcoholics – some even in their teens [...] Half of Wright’s liver patients are not drinkers. Smoker's cough 'could be sign of serious disease' - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Smokers are being urged not to dismiss the early signs of a debilitating disease as simply a smoker's cough. In a new campaign, Public Health England says too many smokers remain unaware of the risks of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). COPD, which narrows the airways, can leave people struggling to do simple tasks such as climbing stairs. Figures show more than 1m people in England are living with it, with nine in 10 cases caused by smoking. COPD is actually the umbrella term for a number of serious lung conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. NO CURE People with the disease have difficulties breathing, primarily due to the narrowing of their airways and destruction of lung tissue. //&! bbc.in/1QXhR74

Leslie Jamison: confessional writing is not self-indulgent | Books | The Guardian
november 2015 by asterisk2a
[ no judgement. empathy. compassion. see Dr Gabor Mate Rich Roll Podcast #189 ] When they confessed things to me, these strangers were offering something but they were also asking for something. They were asking for the subject of the book itself: empathy. They wanted an enactment of its central principle, its primary call: to pay attention. Even when they didn't say they wanted this, I felt I owed it to them. The professor struggling with chronic headaches wasn't asking for anything, she was just offering a response: "I find the thing that wears you down the most is pain. To wake up and as you gain consciousness to feel the pain again, and wanting it to not be so, but yet it is, and having to face that reality hundreds, in my case thousands, of days in a row. It transforms you and disconnects you from everyone, even those who want to understand."

Ceased all power and rendered the citizen powerless. This is no capitalistic democracy. This is crony capitalism. Cycling: three-quarters of Britons support more spending on bike use | Environment | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ where is the bike lobby here? its a bn dollar business. ] Biggest ever survey on subject says people would like government to spend almost seven times more on bike infrastructure than it does now. [...] Currently, about 1% to 2% of all trips in the UK are made by bike, as against figures of 25% or more in some nations, such as the Netherlands. Activists argue that more bike use would greatly help combat the ongoing health crisis caused by physical inactivity, as well as reducing vehicle pollution, among other benefits. “The message from the public couldn’t be clearer: there’s a desire to cycle more, but that a lack of safe places to ride bikes is off putting,” said Jason Torrance, policy director at Sustrans. [...] “Physical inactivity, congestion and declining air quality cost our economy billions. Governments must act to secure a greater share of current transport investment for cycling and walking.”

Mindfulness has huge health potential – but McMindfulness is no panacea | Jon Kabat-Zinn | Comment is free | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ you own only your thoughts, emotions and health (fitness) ] [ you have to function ] Mindfulness is often misunderstood – so let us be clear about what we are encouraging. In essence, mindfulness – being about attention, awareness, relationality, and caring – is a universal human capacity akin to our capacity for language acquisition. It is a way of being in wise and purposeful relationship with one’s experience, both inwardly and outwardly, with oneself and with others. Thus there is an intrinsic social dimension to its cultivation as well. It usually involves cultivating familiarity and intimacy with aspects of everyday experience that we often take for granted.

UK's most expensive city facing 'catastrophe' - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
shortage of supply = unaffordable = nobody can afford to live there, work there, study there. or have to commute from out of town for 1 hour or more. // this is not only a problem in Oxford. NHS Grampian has problems of recruiting because unaffordable house prices and rents pushed up by Oil Industry and the lack of new housing. Same for teaching jobs. // all the while building companies make pumper profits and even skirt around the edges to lower the ratio of social and affordable housing they have to provide with each new big project. its in their interest, if prices were to fell, they would make less money. so they build not enough to keep up with demand at all. and not enough so each new builds profit rises because of risen demand and people willing to pay more for the same house or flat from previous year or two or three despite no real improvement in the build technically/energy efficiency wise/or architecture wise - modern, wide open, big windows. //

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben? — der Freitag
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Average monthly rent hits record high of £816, highlighting housing shortage | Money | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Rents rose across most of England by averages of 6.3% and 8.5% in past year, say separate studies, but fell in the north-west, north-east and Wales [...] Housing charity Shelter said the figures “highlight the plight of an entire generation stuck in insecure and expensive private renting”. On Tuesday, official figures underlined the continuing difficulty of buying, as UK house prices surged to a record peak of £284,000 on average in August. According to the report from Your Move and Reeds Rains, rents rose to a “new all-time record” in September and are up a typical 6.3% on an annual basis. It found that rents are now almost a quarter (24%) higher than in January 2010, while the index of CPI inflation is just 14% higher over the same period. // bonuses and pay and profit for building companies are up as well. actively restricting demand to push up prices marginally (compounding over time). nearly all property sells before even the first brick is put down for the development!]

Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

More patients in Scotland given antidepressants - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
814,181 patients in 2014/15. Since 2009/10, use of antidepressants has increased by 28.5%. Two-thirds of the patients given the drugs were women, with use peaking in the 50-54 age group. The figures indicated antidepressant use was associated with deprivation. They recorded 225,969 patients in the poorest parts of Scotland receiving the drugs, compared with 110,507 in the least deprived areas. The total cost of antidepressants to the NHS in Scotland was £40.8m. The use of lower-cost drugs means this figure has fallen by one-third over the past 10 years. [...] "We are now looking at the flabbergasting statistic of more than one in seven people in Scotland being prescribed antidepressants this year. [...] "The fact that we have seen such substantial increases in prescriptions raises real concerns over whether this reflects shortages in other services, //&! bit.ly/1GJ9ouW - doubling in 10 years from 10 to 20 million daily doses for NHS Grampian [...] without other forms of treatment.

Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

Concern over hidden diesel pollutant - BBC News
september 2015 by asterisk2a
Atmospheric levels of a little known by-product from diesel engines are up 70 times higher than expected according to a study. Researchers found that long-chain hydrocarbons are significantly under-reported in car manufacturers' data. These hydrocarbons are a key component of two of the worst air pollutants, ozone and particulate matter. The authors believe these "hidden" emissions are having a large impact on air quality in cities like London. The exhaust pipes of diesel-fuelled trucks and cars produce an array of emissions that have different impacts on the air that people breathe. Complicated mixture The nitrogen dioxide and particles that are emitted from burning diesel have a direct impact on human health in cities. But diesel also contains more complex, long-chain hydrocarbons, whose role in air pollution has been little understood until now. [ science ] There have been several air pollution alerts in London over the past two years

Revealed: British ministers tried to block EU moves to clean up air quality | Environment | The Guardian
september 2015 by asterisk2a
A document obtained by the Observer reveals that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been advising British MEPs to vote against legislation that would oblige countries to carry out “routine and non-routine” inspections on vehicles’ “real-world” emissions. [...] The revelation will add to the growing concerns over the government’s commitment to tackling air pollution. It follows the admission last week that the Department for Transport had ignored significant evidence of the fraudulent practices being employed by the car industry when this was sent to it a year ago. About 29,000 deaths in the UK are hastened by inhalation of minute particles of oily, unburnt soot emitted by all petrol engines and an estimated 23,500 by the invisible but toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) discharged by diesel engines.
