Revealed: legal aid cuts forcing parents to give up fight for children | Law | The Guardian
Ex-minister says cuts went too far, as Guardian investigation shows wide-ranging impact [...] “draconian”. Protracted austerity since 2012 has reduced funding by about £950m a year in real terms, causing an alarming rise in the number of people forced to represent themselves. [...] Prevented hundreds of thousands of people from pursuing justice in other areas such as housing, debt, employment, clinical negligence, immigration, welfare payments and education. [...] “What saved the courts from chaos is that [the government also] cut police funding. If you restored funding to the police and they caught and prosecuted more [suspects], the courts would be in desperate trouble.” &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/how-legal-aid-cuts-filled-family-courts-with-bewildered-litigants &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/strain-of-legal-aid-cuts-showing-in-family-housing-and-immigration-law &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/26/legal-aid-how-has-it-changed-in-70-years &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/27/its-completely-wrong-falsely-accused-tory-mp-attacks-legal-aid-cuts &! https://www.theguardian.com/law/2018/dec/27/secret-barrister-legal-aid-the-rule-law-cuts

Policing in parts of the UK is 'broken', says Police Federation chief | UK news | The Guardian
John Apter says stretched resources force police to ditch some crime investigations [...] “We can’t do everything – there are going to be situations where we simply can’t deliver the policing we want to deliver,” he said. “In those cases we are failing the public, but that’s not the fault of police officers on the ground, and in some cases it’s not the chief constable’s fault. “You can only slice the financial cake so many ways and you have to prioritise … The public are already suffering and they are going to suffer more and more.” Forces logged 5.5m crimes in the 12 months to March, a rise of 11% on the previous year and the highest tally for an equivalent period since 2005-06. // &! https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/aug/12/the-guardian-view-on-legal-aid-cuts-have-caused-chaos-and-must-be-reversed - The Guardian view on legal aid: cuts have caused chaos and must be reversed

Underfunded justice system 'crumbling', top criminal barrister says | Law | The Guardian
[pure rational rationing (workload) decisions out of necessity - by individuals, forced upon them by Austerity decisions] Failures to disclose evidence in rape prosecutions are a sign of the “dystopian disaster” engulfing the criminal justice system that has been caused by chronic government underfunding, the head of the criminal bar has warned. Angela Rafferty QC, who represents criminal barristers in England and Wales, criticised ministers for trying to promote the justice system as “a national asset” at the time of Brexit when in reality “the fabric of the court estate [is] crumbling”. [...] The Law Society, which represents solicitors across England and Wales, has launched legal action against the Ministry of Justice for cutting fees for defence lawyers, who have to examine increasingly large volumes of material recovered from mobile phones and laptops.

Inquiry launched into UK gender laws amid fears over Brexit effect | World news | The Guardian
[ one particular NHS already breaking EU overtime work directive ] Areas of equality law to be examined include measures to guarantee equal pay, protection for part-time workers and during pregnancy, and combating so-called intersectional discrimination, where someone faces potential disadvantage for not just their gender but another area, for example race or religion. [...] While the government had promised to protect equality and the rights of workers following departure from the EU, Smethers said, the concern was that some protections could be lost almost inadvertently amid wider changes. [...] “The real worry we’ve got is that those kind of assurances are actually quite superficial, and they are probably a second order commitment compared to the need to secure a competitive economy, and how we compete if we’re outside the trading bloc,” Smethers said. &! Legal highs 'may be linked' to rise in HIV in Glasgow area
For the first time in almost 30 years, new diagnoses of HIV related to drug injecting was at a comparable level among gay and heterosexual men.
Investigations into the outbreak highlighted that some drug users were sharing needles, syringes, spoons and water when preparing and injecting their drugs.
It has also highlighted that there is low awareness of the risks of HIV from doing so. [...] Dr Catriona Milosevic, consultant in public health medicine at NHSGGC, said it was "vitally important" that people who inject drugs do not share or reuse equipment.

Changes to legal aid for domestic violence victims ruled 'invalid' | Law | The Guardian
The decision comes after women’s rights campaigners argued large numbers of victims were being unlawfully blocked from legal aid, forcing many who have endured rape and beating at the hands of their partners to face their abusers in court without legal representation. [...] Research by the charity had found that 53% of those affected by domestic violence had chosen not to pursue cases in the family courts because they could not get legal aid.

Tory MP Crispin Blunt: 'I out myself as poppers user' | Politics | The Guardian
“I use poppers. I out myself as a poppers user. And would be directly affected by this legislation. And I was astonished to find that it’s proposed they be banned and, frankly, so were very many gay men.” Poppers are especially popular among gay men, and used to prepare for sex and enhance sexual pleasure. The proposed laws would criminalise the sale of the drug, but not those who buy it.

@4:40 - RE: Food as Reward = Business as Usual (BAS). Any food that triggers some feel good chemicals can be abused: junk food, fast food, processed food, alcohol, tobacco, drugs. Some are legal others carry a stigma and others are illegal ... depending where you live. (Liberal) Progressive policy making would be to legalise all but put a progressive and aggressive tax on those. An addiction & harm tax along the nudge theory. And with that tax revenue to pay for public health care and public education campaigns to raise awareness and change perception, image and opinion. Not pulling the nanny state. But if you use tobacco, you pay twice; now with your discretionary spending choice and then with your health, and we let you know on the packaging. And we can also subsidise cycle to work schemes, cycle lanes, cycle shelters.

addictive: sugar+fat mix, alcohol, tobacco, ... [...] criminalising doesn't work (deviant behaviour = Religious), have to allow it supervised (clean drugs, not stretched nor other toxic ingredients) & educate & regulate. based on the scientific evidence it is the best choice for governments pockets (less cost for police and law enforcement, as well new consumer tax source and business tax source, and local gov/councils; paying for license to sell and grow/make, oversight and regular check-ups like food safety and hygiene laws). [...] drugs are an excellent way to vilify and marginalise certain kinds of people. see relative new legal high; media manufactured consent. they are dangerous bc nobody knows what they are & what is in then & there are no clinical trials ie for establishing safety limits! as gov also established safety recommendations for alcohol bit.ly/1uNuvry [...] gov does what voters want them to do (ie both Clinton's against gay marriage) // full episode - bit.ly/1NrcZSQ
