Why a good Ofsted report can be bad for GCSE results | Education | The Guardian
Health warning: positive Ofsted ratings may damage GCSE results.

This is the shock finding of a study conducted by four universities and two thinktanks which found that parents with children in schools that have received a better-than-expected Ofsted report are much more likely to reduce how much they help their children with their homework. This, in turn, could have a damaging impact on their children’s GCSE results.

Excluded pupils' results 'to be part of league tables' - BBC News
Schools in England will have to stay accountable for pupils they exclude, a government-backed review has said.

It could mean school league table rankings having to include the exam results of pupils who have been excluded and moved elsewhere.

The intention is to stop so-called "off-rolling", where schools remove difficult or low-achieving pupils.

"Exclusion from school should never mean exclusion from education," said review author Edward Timpson.

Education Secretary Damian Hinds, endorsing the report, promised "greater clarity" for schools over the appropriate use of exclusions.

Where did all the GCSE pupils go – and why has no one noticed? | Education | The Guardian
[ underachieving taking pupils off roll to boost class/school rating! League Table. unintended consequences! macro over micro + staff shortage, pressure, not money, less money! making the short cut to let underachievers and trouble makers go. classic american school dropout. in childhood already left behind! ] Earlier this month, Sean Harford, Ofsted’s national director, said that from now on inspectors should question headteachers during inspections when large numbers of students have left. And Amanda Spielman, the chief inspector, described “off-rolling”, alongside other results-boosting methods, as a scandal.

Our investigation shows that even though the inspectorate recognised this as a national problem going back to 2010, it has not done anything about it.

The research organisation Education Datalab recently published reports on pupils leaving their secondary schools, following an investigation by Education Guardian in 2014. It raised concerns that 20,000 pupils were being lost to state education altogether, with no one knowing where they had gone. The reports do not show whether pupils were encouraged to move or left of their own volition. Those who had disappeared were mostly lower achievers.

Yemen conflict: Governor of Aden killed in Islamic State attack - BBC News
Islamic State militants say they are responsible for a blast that killed the governor of Yemen's port city of Aden. Jaafar Mohammed Saad and several aides died when their convoy was hit. IS says it detonated a car laden with explosives as he drove by. The group has established a presence in Yemen since its civil war broke out. It is opposed to the government and Iranian-backed Houthi rebels who have seized much of the country, including the capital Sanaa. Earlier this year, Aden was recaptured by government troops backed by a Saudi-led coalition.

Jürgen Klopp is a modernising force in the mould of Arsène Wenger | Barney Ronay | Football | The Guardian
Welcome, Jürgen! Just don’t bother talking to the natives. Because the fact is for all its commercial triumphs the Premier League remains robustly anti-intellectual, a product with plenty of sound and fury but little in the way of innovation. No significant tactical model has ever emerged here, no way of playing beyond the successfully reeled-in power football of the years 2005-2011. Not that Klopp comes across as a notable pointy-head. An article by James Corbett in the Blizzard magazine recently identified him as part of a group of coaches from the south-west of Germany with “a highly innovative philosophy” based on the ideas of one Helmut Gross, a man who once spent so long holed up with Ralf Rangnick watching Sacchi videos the VCR machine wore out. VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'

Sweden’s feminist foreign minister has dared to tell the truth about Saudi Arabia. What happens now concerns us all » The Spectator
You might think of Swedes as upright social democrats, who have never let worries of appearing tedious stand in the way of their righteousness. But that has never been wholly true, and is certainly not true when there is money at stake. [...] No less a figure than His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf himself hauled Wallström in at the weekend to tell her that he wanted a compromise. Saudi Arabia has successfully turned criticism of its brutal version of Islam into an attack on all Muslims, regardless of whether they are Wahhabis or not, and Wallström and her colleagues are clearly unnerved by accusations of Islamophobia. The signs are that she will fold under the pressure, particularly when the rest of liberal Europe shows no interest in supporting her. [...] Finally, and most revealingly in my opinion, the non-affair shows us that the rights of women always come last. [...] an embarrassed and hugely revealing silence. // via http://redd.it/30el3h

The War Nerd: Islamic State and American Narcissism | PandoDaily
The people who fight for Islamic State are not victims. Well, we’re all victims, if you want; we’re all gonna die, we’re all confused, we all had weird childhoods…but the groups that make up Islamic State are some of the most privileged, arrogant, and unsympathetic demographics in the entire Muslim world. There are two groups involved in Islamic State: First, the core strength, the Sunni Arabs in Iraq; second, the much-hyped “foreign fighters” from outside the Iraq/Syria war zone. [...] That’s what Islamic State’s Iraqi roots are: Bitter, defeated Sunni using religion as a handy pretext to win back control of the country they consider theirs, and theirs alone. Only fools like Moyers and de Vega seriously imagine that gang has anything to do with preserving the honor of Islam.

The American fear-mongering machine is about to scare us back into war again | Trevor Timm | Comment is free | theguardian.com
[ Intelligence Agencies missed the rise of the splinter group (ISIS) of al-Qaida !!?? as local threat to security & stability? ] The American fear-mongering machine is about to scare us back into war again Thanks to a say-anything media, hawkish politicians and an Orwellian administration, a war-weary public is terrified. Are there any red lines anymore – or just launch buttons?

BBC News - Iraq crisis: Obama to set out 'US offensive against IS'
US President Barack Obama is to set out his "game plan" against Islamic State militants in a speech on Wednesday. Mr Obama, who has been criticised for failing to outline a strategy, told NBC TV the US would degrade IS, shrink their territory and "defeat them". US jets bombed IS targets in western Iraq for the first time on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Arab League has vowed to take "all necessary measures" against IS, which has seized a huge amount of territory from Iraq and Syria. The League gave its backing to a Security Council resolution passed last month calling on member states to stem the flow of weapons and money to extremists in Iraq and Syria. BBC World Service Middle East editor Sebastian Usher says the Arab League's message will hearten Mr Obama, but the question now is whether its members will fully act on it, and act together rather than against each other. [...] Mr Obama went on: "On Wednesday, I'll make a speech and describe what our game plan's going to be going forward."

“These people were very accessible,” Swisher recalls of a younger Bezos and his cohort, “and you met them before they were who they are now.
