Ellen Pao: ‘I Have Decided to End My Lawsuit Against Kleiner Perkins’ | Re/code
Still, Pao underscored that the deck was stacked against her in terms of resources. “I think it is wrong that employees have to pay in this situation, but I simply cannot afford the risks of more costs to fight a firm with massive PR and legal resources,” she said. “The court system is not set up to create an even playing field.” [...] To be clear, Kleiner and I have not reached any agreement to settle this matter. Settlement might have provided me with financial benefits, but only at the great cost of silence." [...] She said she would continue to speak out on issues of gender disparity, but she was spending time with her family and also returning to investing and working with entrepreneurs. &! on.recode.net/1OfLRII

Mansplaining the Ellen Pao trial & fixing the gender issue in venture capital | Calacanis.com
To understand why these VC firms are all male in many cases is to understand that they are not really businesses — they are partnerships. In my experience they operate more like social clubs, sports teams or, wait for it, fraternities. Because their business is not actually building something, but rather sitting around talking about which founders they should back to build something, the required skill is “getting along” and “shooting the shit” and “debating.” In a way, they’re more like debate clubs than corporations. That’s why they constantly go on retreats to try and bond and build trust with each other. [...] They want to build enough trust so that if they say no to Google or Facebook, they are able to keep functioning in the face of such a huge miss! [...] Changing this system will be very hard. Competing with it will be easier. &! youtu.be/Cm5QL2kEqzg - This Week in Start-ups Episode w Liz Gannes, Senior Editor of Re/code

The Kleiner Perkins Lawsuit, and Rethinking the Confidence-Driven Workplace | Hacker News
"At Google, men were being promoted at a much higher rate than women — because they were nominating themselves for promotion and women were not." What’s at Stake in the Ellen Pao Case | Re/code
the clubby world of venture capital, a male-dominated culture that has often been criticized as an insular fraternity of privileged white men despite its veneer of being a meritocracy. [...] While gender inequality has always been an issue in Silicon Valley, it has now come to dominate more of the conversation in the industry. Venture capital firms in particular have appallingly few female partners. [...] But Kleiner Perkins still has more to lose. Though it is an icon of Silicon Valley, having provided funding for historic winners like Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Sun and Google, it has, in recent years, been upstaged by younger and flashier firms. Being cast as a bastion of old-world discrimination does little to improve the image.

Ellen Pao versus Kleiner Perkins Gender Discrimination Suit: Day 1 | Re/code
Toward the end of his opening remarks, Exelrod quoted Doerr, who had hired Pao, discussing what he thinks “correlates more than any other success factor” in entrepreneurs: “If you look at Bezos, or [Netscape founder Marc] Andreessen, [Yahoo co-founder] David Filo, the founders of Google, they all seem to be white, male, nerds who’ve dropped out of Harvard or Stanford and they absolutely have no social life. So when I see that pattern coming in — which was true of Google — it was very easy to decide to invest,” Doerr had said in 2008.
