National Insurance rise 'fair', says PM - BBC News - She said the decision "was taken in the context of a rapidly changing labour market in which the number of people in self employment is rising rapidly".
The shift towards self employment was "eroding the tax base", she argued.
"Is it fair? I think it is fair to close the gap in contributions between two people doing the same work and using the same public services to make the same contribution to wider society."
'We should apologise'
She said, with other NI changes, "this is a change that leaves lower paid self-employed workers better off" and .
Ministers say those earning £16,250 or less will see their NI contributions fall.

Noam Chomsky: The US Health System Is an "International Scandal" -- and ACA Repeal Will Make It Worse
As for reasons, we can return to the more general question of social justice comparisons, but there are special reasons in the health care domain. To an unusual extent, the US health care system is privatized and unregulated. Insurance companies are in the business of making money, not providing health care, and when they undertake the latter, it is likely not to be in the best interests of patients or to be efficient. Administrative costs are far greater in the private component of the health care system than in Medicare, which itself suffers by having to work through the private system.

Here's Why All Pension Funds Are Doomed, Doomed, Doomed
Given that both The Economist and The Wall Street Journal have covered the impossibility of pension funds achieving their expected returns, this reality cannot be a surprise to anyone in a leadership role. [...] Here's problem #1 in a nutshell: the average public pension fund still expects to earn an average annual return of 7.69%, year after year, decade after decade.

This is roughly triple the nominal (not adjusted for inflation) yield on a 30-year Treasury bond (about 2.65%). The only way any fund manager can earn 7.7% or more in a low-yield environment is to make extremely high risk bets that consistently pay off. //&! Climate change: Advisers warn of climate change domino effect
In a 2,000-page report, the Climate Change Committee says flooding will destroy bridges - wrecking electricity, gas and IT connections carried on them.
The committee also warns that poor farming means the most fertile soils will be badly degraded by mid-century.
And it says heat-related deaths among the elderly will triple by the 2050s as summer temperatures spiral.
The projections are based on the supposition that governments keep promises made at the Paris climate conference to cut emissions - a pledge that is in doubt.
The committee says if emissions are allowed to spiral, London summer temperatures could hit 48C (118F) in an extreme scenario, although the advisers say they don't expect that to happen.
The report from 80 authors is the most comprehensive yet on the potential impact of climate change on the UK.

BBC News - 'Half of UK people' will get cancer
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, analysis suggests. Cancer Research UK said this estimate, using a new calculation method, replaced a forecast of more than one in three people developing the disease. It said longer life expectancies meant more people would be affected. But it was not inevitable and improving lifestyle, such as losing weight and quitting smoking, could have a major impact, the charity added. The good news is cancer survival figures are also rising. &! Cancer diagnosis rate of 1,000 per day to 'push NHS to limit' The NHS will be "pushed to its limit" by the end of 2016 by rising numbers of cancer patients, a charity says. [...] The Department of Health said it had invested £750m in cancer care. [...] "Cracks in the NHS are already beginning to show," -

Sozialversicherung macht Milliardendefizit - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Dr. Garth Davis - Meat alters microbiome (gut flora) disadvantageous to your health.
Dr. Lawrence David did a fascinating study showing that you could dramatically and quickly alter your gut biome when you eat meat, and meat can specifically create inflammatory bacteria. [...] Dr. McCarty looked at the role of excess essential amino acids has on affecting health and was amazed to find, as I was, the negative effects of excessive protein in the diet. He found that excess protein coming mainly from animals, caused obesity, heart disease, and cancer. In the discussion of the article he states, that the data was so overwhelming he changed to a vegan diet. He concludes with, “ I suspect the single injunction, ‘ do not eat animal products has the the potential to do more for world health than all of the abstruse wisdom in all of the worlds medical libraries”. I certainly agree with him.

This Legendary Accounting Firm Just Ran the Numbers on Climate Change | Mother Jones
This accounting firm confirms what we've been saying for a while. We don't have to choose between the the environment and the economy. In fact, we can't afford NOT to stop climate change. [...] We're 20 years away from catastrophe, says PricewaterhouseCoopers. [...] Overall, PricewaterhouseCoopers paints a bleak picture of a world that's rapidly running out of time; the required effort to curb global emissions will continue to grow each year. "The timeline is also unforgiving. [...] The pressure will be on the world's governments to come up with a solution to this enormous challenge at the much-anticipated climate talks in Paris next year. Gap in Diet Quality Between Wealthiest and Poorest Americans Doubles, Study Finds
The diets of low-income Americans have worsened in the past decade, even as the diets of the wealthiest Americans have improved, according to a new study that is among the first to measure changes in diet quality over time by socioeconomic status. BBC News - Health experts to argue for Scotland drink price plan
"MUP (minimum unit pricing) is opposed by a consortium of multi-national alcohol producers who, inaccurately, are framing this as a health v industry issue. "Demonstrating the falseness of this claim, we have speakers from the Scottish alcohol industry who support this policy from an ethical position." Dr Peter Rice, chair of the body, said a 10% increase in average minimum price in Canada was associated with a 32% drop in alcohol death rates. "Changes in the price of alcohol are a key determinant in rates of alcohol harm," he said. "This vitally important health policy will save Scottish lives and it needs to be implemented as a matter of urgency."

BBC News - Out-of-hospital plan 'a recipe for disaster', MPs warn
The Health Select Committee said the NHS faced "one of its greatest challenges" dealing with patients with long-term conditions, such as diabetes. They account for 70% of health spending but only 30% of patients. The NHS has tried to ensure more care is done in the community, but the MPs questioned the wisdom of this strategy. The cross-party group said these patients would still need specialist hospital care. [...] Figures show these patients are responsible for two-thirds of outpatient and A&E visits and occupy 77% of beds.

only those who have the date, profit from the data. middle class jobs will be lost as software and automation more and more takes over other peoples jobs. 3D printing, transportation, - user data should cost money - it is valuable. Companies will appear that offer people money to share their data, their online lives, in return for money. Less people around the globe needed to produce/make stuff people around the world need. means less menial, task oriented jobs to go around. thus the future is in software, problem solving and creativity. in the next 5 years, Amazon will have only roboters in its warehouses. no people packing the packages.

Alzheimer's could be the most catastrophic impact of junk food | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
[Aftermath of a nation on Poor Diet is a] problem [that] belongs to all of us. Even if you can detach yourself from the suffering caused by diseases arising from bad diets, you will carry the cost, as a growing proportion of the health budget will be used to address them [, and everyone has to pay more to keep health budgets in balance]. The cost – measured in both human suffering and money – could be far greater than we imagined. A large body of evidence now suggests that Alzheimer's is primarily a metabolic disease. Some scientists have gone so far as to rename it: they call it type 3 diabetes.

Experiments conducted seem to support the link between diet and dementia, and researchers have begun to propose potential mechanisms. In common with all brain chemistry, these tend to be fantastically complex, involving, among other impacts, inflammation, stress caused by oxidation, the accumulation of one kind of brain protein and the transformation of another

The Distinction Is Game Theory - Businessweek
This gap allows plans that can better predict beneficiary costs to game the system by selecting beneficiaries who are expected to cost much less than their risk-adjusted payments. (Plans do not always want the least-expensive beneficiaries, but rather those who are the least expensive compared with their risk-adjusted payment. The implication is the same, though: Plans can beat the risk adjustment, and be overpaid.)

—Peter Orszag, “Private-Market Tooth Fairy Can’t Cut Medicare Cost,” Bloomberg View, Aug. 20, 2012

(For a primer on game theory, might I suggest Chapter 10, “Thinking Strategically,” Frank & Bernanke, Principles of Microeconomics, 4th edition. This includes a sidebar in which our august Fed chairman considers “Why do people shout at parties? Tit-for-Tat and the Repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma.”)

BBC News - Today - Bupa members 'can no longer afford premiums'
The UK's biggest health insurer has warned that treatment costs have become so expensive that hundreds of thousands of people are abandoning private medical cover.

Dr Natalie-Jane McDonald, the managing director of BUPA's UK Business, explains part of the issue is due to the "inefficiency and a lack of competition among consultancies and hospitals".

"We have a responsibility on behalf [of our members] to make sure the cost of healthcare is affordable," she told the Today programme.

- rising budget of NHS is and has ever been a problem
- take for example rising cost for rising cases of diabetes
- take for example rising cost for health problems from rising % levels of overweight/obesity within the population
= it is a problem.
Solution. Diet (Vegan) and reasonable amount of exercises.

Lobbying for More Time
Given these circumstances, it might be that the Fed must keep this "extended period" language in their lexicon until just before raising interest rates. To envision this, imagine how investors will react once this language is dropped.

While investors are playing the same game — make no mistake, they are — they will interpret the dropping of this language to mean interest rate hikes are on the way very soon. This will cause them to trade out of fixed income securities, driving market-based yields upward and immediately tightening credit on term borrowers.

The Fed will have tightened simply by dropping the phrase "extended period" and without actually increasing any interest rates.

Realizing that simply dropping this language creates a very real and effectual tightening itself, the Fed will wait until the underlying economy begins to grow and potential perceived inflation occurs before even changing this language. ....
