Nicole Cooke ‘sceptical’ of Bradley Wiggins and hits out at ‘sexist’ cycling | Sport | The Guardian
Her next words, though, were even more damning. “The chronological coincidence of the TUEs just before major events raises suspicions with me based on my experience of patterns and ways that I’ve seen other riders try and beat the system.”

Cooke was also fiercely critical of the efforts to tackle doping, saying that Ukad held a “chocolate sword” because of its lack of resources. But she also attacked the body for not doing enough to investigate wrongdoing. She said that several times she had gone to the authorities, including after being asked to dope by a team manager, yet been fobbed off.

BBC Radio 5 live - In Short, Doctor: 'band aid tricks' won’t solve Rio water risk
Dr Daniel Becker, a paediatrician who works in the city's poorest neighbourhoods, says "human sewage", combined with industrial waste, in Guanabara Bay pose a real risk to swimmers, sailors and windsurfers.

He said Brazil's government has used "band aid tricks" to reduce the amount of rubbish, but this is a much bigger problem than that.

If athletes on, or in the water swallow any of it, Dr Becker says the bacteria and viruses contained within could lead to "diarrohea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disease, also Hepatitis A is a risk."

Rio 2016: Refugee team to compete at Olympics - BBC Sport
Fewer than half of tickets sold So far, fewer than half of the 7.5 million tickets issued for the Games, which will run from 5-21 August, have been sold. Sales of more expensive tickets for premium events and the opening ceremony mean ticket revenues have reached 74% or $195m (£139m), but the build-up to the Games has been overshadowed by an economic downturn in Brazil, political turmoil and Zika. The 2012 Olympics in London reached its revenue target from ticket sales months before the start because of huge demand and, overall, 96% of the 8.2 million tickets were sold. `"I have no concerns at all there," said Bach.

Adidas to end IAAF sponsorship deal early in wake of doping crisis - BBC Sport
Earlier this month, the commission's chairman, Dick Pound, delivered a second, damning report, which revealed that "corruption was embedded" within the IAAF under former president Lamine Diack. Within days, a decision at the highest level in Adidas was taken to terminate the relationship. It is understood the German multinational believes the doping revelations in Pound's reports constitute a breach of its agreement with the IAAF. The 11-year sponsorship deal was signed in 2008 and was due to run until 2019. At the time of signing, it was reported the deal would be worth about $33m (£23m). But sources have told the BBC the figure is much higher, and that in terms of cash and product, it is worth about $8m (£5.6m) per year. This would mean the projected lost revenue for the IAAF over the next four years will be more than $30m (£21m). //&! Unglaubwürdig. - bit.ly/1lLsDjd

Being Trans and the Paradox of Sport — Medium
Just yesterday the International Olympic Committee announced new rules for transgender athletes, an update which ends their Gender Confirmation Surgery (GCS) requirement. This is a huge step forward for trans people everywhere, simply because many of us choose not to have surgery in the first place because of lack of need or funds to pay for it. Whether to have expensive and invasive GCS or not should be a matter of individual need, not whether or not an athlete can continue his or her athletic career. It’s easy to forget sometimes that GCS is permanent sterilization. For me, my involvement in sport was both life-saving and a paradox for myself. - outsports.com/2016/1/21/10812404/transgender-ioc-policy-new-olympics

Athletics doping crisis: Secret plan to delay naming Russian cheats - BBC Sport
A senior figure at athletics' world governing body was planning to delay naming Russian drug cheats in the run-up to the 2013 World Championships. The plan is outlined in an email from IAAF deputy general secretary Nick Davies to Papa Massata Diack. Diack, who worked as an IAAF marketing consultant at the time, is the son of former IAAF president Lamine Diack. Davies wrote he needed to "sit down" with the anti-doping team to discuss "Russian skeletons in the cupboard".

Lance Armstrong Refuses to Meet With U.S. Antidoping Agency - NYTimes.com
Armstrong asked for two week extension to meet with USADA and at deadline turns down and criticizes them. could've done that 2 weeks ago when the first deadline from USADA was passed. Deadline by USADA for LA - that if he would speak out, his lifetime ban could be reduced. >> He still tries to protect himself and others (ie UCI). Because it could come even worse - that the UCI truly did enable riders to dope and pass doping tests. Which would be a huge downfall for the UCI (old boys only club), and with it cycling - as the IOC sees itself forced to act and remove it temporarily from the Olympic program for at least 1 event (Rio). This would be much bigger than LA. As this case would be about corruption and moral failure in highest order - a gov body of sports.

BBC Sport - Cycling could be dropped from Olympics, says IOC member
Cycling could be dropped from the Olympics if Lance Armstrong implicates the sport's governing body in a cover-up, says International Olympic Committee member Dick Pound. Pound, a former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), said: "The only way it (cycling) is going to clean up is if all these people say 'hey, we're no longer in the Olympics and that's where we want to be, so let's earn our way back into it. "The IOC would have to deal with it. The (UCI) is not known for its strong actions to anti-doping. "It was the same in weightlifting a few years ago. All of a sudden when you get right up against it things go fuzzy and they say, 'well, we can't punish innocent athletes in these sports by dropping the sport from the programme'."

Exclusive – Obree says UCI not fit for purpose | We Are Free Agents
As someone who had his own share of battles with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Graeme Obree is well-placed to judge the effectiveness of an organisation currently defending themselves against accusations of at best incompetence, and at worst being complicit in systemic doping in professional cycling.

“I don’t think the UCI are a fit body to be running the sport. The UCI is an autocratic, old boys’ network all the way through the levels of the pyramid. I think there’s no way of repairing that organisation.”

> the whole shabang points that LA and UCI are covering each ones back. UCI was and still is at least looking over the issue of doping culture in cycling. at worst it was complicit and helped cover-up the tracks of positive samples and other evidence.
> IOC has every reason to suspend (road) cycling from the olympic program for at least one cycle because UCI isn't willing to clean the sport and itself.

Fall Armstrong: Dopingexperte Franke zweifelt an Geständnis - SPIEGEL ONLINE

>> IOC could ban cycling for 2 games if it is true that UCI knew of doping and helped to cover up traces of doping.
