The "War on Terror" in Yemen and Beyond: Legal and Ethical Implications - YouTube
USA is at war in Yemen. Is a humanitarian catastrophe. Yet another civil war in Middle East. As in Syria/Irak. And Afghanistan. Under radar screen of international community. United Nations. [bc Saudis own middle east hegemony aspirations! ... oil dollars!/petro dollars are their insurance!] [ France UK USA sell arms to SA ] Drone strikes (civilian casualties and mistaken targets) create anti-american sentiment. Saudi Arabia opposed Iran agreement deeply! Is this all "obscure." Or is it all absurd (as is life, see psychology on existentialism). Creating oh, dear (oh dearism (see Adam Curtis, throwing hands over head giving up to understand followed by covering ones eyes, ears, mouth). Bc it is easier in a selfish world where collectivism and activism has been buried under trillons of selfies and handbags for one season. [...] Another Proxy War, as in Syria (ie Iran backed Houthis, little bit overstated! but there).

Why Brexit could hurt the US, too
Washington fears that a decision to abandon the European project, in which Britain has been an often-reluctant participant since 1973, would threaten to unravel the union, a vital ally, as it struggles with disunity and unleash a new instability in an already dangerously volatile world.
While advocates of a British departure say the country will be stronger freed from the shackles of Brussels bureaucracy, opponents fear it could dismember the U.K. should Scotland decide its future still lies in the E.U. and demand a fresh independence vote. [...] And throughout his presidency, Obama has expressed irritation at the neediness of European leaders competing for the attention of the American president. He's grumbled that European nations won't do more for NATO and even publicly rebuked Cameron in a recent Atlantic magazine interview for not doing more to bring peace to Libya after a NATO intervention in 2011 pushed by him and other Europeans.

That means work on them will start later than planned, and will be carried out more slowly, probably requiring fewer workers.

The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Iran nuclear deal: 'New chapter' for Tehran as sanctions end - BBC News
Iran "has opened a new chapter" in its ties with the world, President Hassan Rouhani said, hours after the US and EU lifted nuclear sanctions. The move came after the international nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, said Iran had complied with a deal designed to prevent it developing nuclear weapons. Mr Rouhani said the deal did not harm any nation. Most Western governments hailed the move, but Israel's PM says Tehran still wants to build a nuclear bomb.

Al Jazeera America to shut down cable news channel - BBC News
Al Jazeera promised to expand its coverage of the US online after the channel shuts down in April. The network replaced Current TV, a network founded by former US Vice President Al Gore. The Qatar-based broadcaster bought Current TV for around $500 million (£308 million). Al Jazeera America was available in about 60 million American homes. Politico notes that the channel reached an average of 19,000 viewers each day in 2015, far fewer than its competitors. The channel struggled with internal turmoil, as well, including multiple discrimination lawsuits that ended up ousting its founding CEO.

Syria conflict: Russia air strikes 'killed 200 civilians' - BBC News
At least 200 civilians have been killed in Russian air strikes in Syria, an Amnesty International report says, quoting witnesses and activists. It says it "researched remotely" more than 25 Russian attacks in five areas between 30 September and 29 November. The findings indicate "serious failures [by Russia] to respect international humanitarian law", Amnesty says. Moscow has repeatedly denied causing civilian deaths, describing such claims as part of "information warfare". Russia began air strikes targeting Islamic State militants (IS) and other groups on 30 September, saying it was acting at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Moscow has also been accused of bombing rebel groups opposed to Mr Assad but backed by the West.

No mention of climate change in the TPP: Sierra Club report shows “dirty deal” means environmental disaster - Salon.com
The Trans-Pacific Partnership will "fuel the climate crisis" warns the environmental organization in a new report [...] Environmental and labor organizations have warned for years that the TPP, which has been characterized as “NAFTA on steroids,” will mean disaster for the climate and for the economy. “A Dirty Deal: How the Trans-Pacific Partnership Threatens Our Climate,” the Sierra Club’s new report, details just how disastrous it could be. [...] The Sierra Club’s report finds that the TPP will do the following: “Empower fossil fuel corporations to challenge climate policies in private tribunals” [...] he deal will give foreign corporations the ability to sue governments for implementing environmental policies that do not meet companies’ “expectations” or that could make their investments less profitable.

Conspiracy-theorist nutbags run Congress, and they’re making Benghazi a verb: Next up, climate scientists - Salon.com
But in this political environment, being cautious about just handing a bunch of documents over to Republican is a smart move. After watching the Planned Parenthood and Benghazi hearings, a couple of things are clear: One, the Republicans will extract any stray word or number they can and take it out of context in an effort to advance their political agenda, with concerns about decency and honesty not restraining them in the slightest. Two, if they can’t find something like that, they’ll probably just lie about it. [...] The episode was a stellar demonstration of how the utter lack of morals and decency among House Republicans will lead them to distort and lie about numbers, even in the most obnoxious and obvious ways. [...] Imagine what kind of lies and distortions Republicans could gin up with the complex equations and variables that go into climate science. // confusing people. put doubt into peoples mind.

Xi Jinping state visit: UK and China sign cybersecurity pact | Politics | The Guardian
[ this is just show: https://wikileaks.org/nsa-germany/selectors.html // look at cable gate. what officials wrote and what was said in-front of cameras and press. ] Cameron said the two nations had signed a “high-level security dialogue” on cybercrime, aimed at stopping attacks on companies either to gain access to intellectual property or confidential information or to disable systems. The deal mirrors one agreed between China and the US last month, but which the American monitoring group CrowdStrike believes was violated almost immediately. GCHQ has reported “disturbing” levels of cyber-attacks on British companies, which are thought mostly to originate in Russia and China. The agreement is the first time that Britain and China have committed to work together on cybersecurity.

Hinkley Point nuclear agreement reached - BBC News
More than £30bn worth of deals between the UK and China are expected to be struck during the four-day visit. [...] 'Security concerns' The Hinkley Point project has come under fire over its cost and the delays to investment decisions and the timetable for building. The government has also been criticised for guaranteeing a price of £92.50 per megawatt hour of electricity - more than twice the current cost - for the electricity Hinkley produces. [<< death knell 4 UK consumer & heavy industry! Griechenland-Krise: Europa braucht neue Regeln - SPIEGEL ONLINE
&! &! BBC News - Ukraine: UK and EU 'badly misread' Russia
The House of Lords EU committee claimed Europe "sleepwalked" into the crisis. The EU had not realised the depth of Russian hostility to its plans for closer relations with Ukraine, it said. It comes as French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke about the crisis at a joint news conference in Paris. Ill-equipped The committee's report said Britain had not been "active or visible enough" in dealing with the situation in Ukraine. It blamed Foreign Office cuts, which it said led to fewer Russian experts working there, and less emphasis on analysis. A similar decline in EU foreign ministries had left them ill-equipped to formulate an "authoritative response" to the crisis, it said. The report claimed that for too long the EU's relationship with Moscow had been based on the "optimistic premise" that Russia was on a trajectory to becoming a democratic country.
