"The social aggregator is a terrible business model." : TheoryOfReddit
If you charge users up front to use your service, all things being equal, they are more likely to use one that is free, especially if an up-and-coming one offers something new and compelling. If you charge your users by selling their information and views to advertisers, then your service is beholden to those parties that buy the information and views, and this results in motivations that take priority to the user experience. For these reasons, starting with VC funding is a poison pill for social aggregators, as the profit pressure runs contrary to the conditions and patience necessary for community building and early growth. // https://hubski.com/pub?id=219234

With its own Tweet gaffe, Twitter spectacularly demonstrates its own intrinsic Catch-22 | PandoDaily
[ specific use case, growth will be too slow, too anemic, for Wall Streets taste. Twitter is a utility, but not such a big one like FB. Oversold potential. But that is Catch-22 you have to sell hard and project. You basically work for Wall Street cottage industry to meet their estimates/forecasts. ] CEO Dick Costolo has tried a lot of new tricks to change that, catering more to logged-out users on Twitter’s home page, providing new users a readymade list of followers, partnering with Google to include tweets in search results. But today, Costolo said Twitter still needs to help users answer two questions, “Why should I use Twitter?” and “How do I use Twitter?” Incredibly, these questions plague Twitter nine years after the first tweet was ever sent, 17 months after Twitter’s IPO and nearly six months after the analyst day when Costolo pledged to turn things around. As a result, user growth remains disappointing. And now, it seems, so does revenue growth.

How The Facebook Bubble Is Driving Online Startups Into The Arms Of Offline Advertising | TechCrunch
FB accounts for >70% of all Social Media Ad spending! The rest is spend on Twitter and elsewhere. Programmatic Advertising is a crutch for native Web advertising to compete with FBs ability to slice and dice and analyse every nook and cranny. FB likes to be the web equivalent; Internet.org and asking/offering content creators/news papers to host content inside their Walls. And remember, Google missed this Social train badly, tried w Google+ after failing with Buzz. Was also late with (native) Mobile Search & just got going. And their last quarter(s) hinted at a stall of their advertising business and Wall Street doesn't like seeing this behemoth relying on just one business model while Nest Labs was a defensive acquisition (competing w Apple) and they lost out to FB to acquire WhatsApp. And if any Google X project will be able to live up to AdSense(Google Search) is questionable. Google might begin slowly dying soon in next 5 years by thousand cuts, like MSFT late 90's. Time is ripe.

In an attempt to increase its influence over the media, Facebook makes publishers an offer they should refuse | PandoDaily
That kind of wholesale transfer of content sends a cold, dark chill down the collective spine of publishers, both traditional and digital insurgents alike. If Facebook’s mobile app hosted publishers’ pages, the relationship with customers, most of the data about what they did and the reading experience would all belong to the platform. Media companies would essentially be serfs in a kingdom that Facebook owns. [...] & Facebook might be bad, but Google is even worse. Amazon Pounces On Twitch After Google Balks Due To Antitrust Concerns
Google was unable to close the deal, because it was concerned about potential antitrust issues that could have come with the acquisition. The Mountain View, Calif. company already owns YouTube, the world’s most-visited content streaming site, which competes with Twitch to broadcast and stream live or on-demand video game sessions. One source noted that because of the concerns, Google and Twitch could not come to an agreement on the size of a potential breakup fee in case the deal did not go through. Costolo’s plan to make Twitter all about entertainment makes perfect sense | PandoDaily
"There are huge dollars in entertainment– more than in news and certainly more than in what your friend had for lunch. Twitter is the only force on earth that argues against time shifting. Sure you can TiVo the Oscars. But you better not open Twitter for two hours if you do. And lastly, with “just” 300 million users or so Twitter desparately needs to go mainstream. Like it or not, this is a generation of consumer Web companies graded on the Facebook and LinkedIn curves. You gotta either have the size of the former or the monetization of the latter. The lowest common denominator on global culture are movies, music, TV, and sports. Why your dinky little startup is worth billions of dollars - Quartz
Though companies hire trained futurists, technology is still moving to fast to predict where it will go. “Value has become an abstraction because we don’t really know what kind of product is going to make the most money,” Chayka writes. “We have no idea what kind of technology will dominate the commercial landscape over the next decade, let alone century.” For companies with as much money and as much to gain—and lose—as Google, Facebook, and Twitter, it’s better to be optimistic about hyped startups than to let them slip away. Of course, this means that they know some of their acquisitions will be duds and even those that aren’t will be expensive. But it’s worth more to them to stay ahead of the curve.

As Messaging Wars Escalate, Social App Tango Raises $280 Million | Re/code
The moves essentially signal a new era for global Internet companies — one in which communication between people isn’t restricted to platforms like Facebook and Twitter, or even older messaging services like Gmail or AOL Instant Messenger. Instead, more companies have recognized the power of tapping into users’ existing social communication networks, found within the average person’s mobile device phone book. Apps like Tango, WhatsApp and Viber all comb a user’s mobile contact list to instantly connect people to their network of friends.

Reddit Is Big, Growing, and (Maybe) Turning Ever-More Inward - Robinson Meyer - The Atlantic
via http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1v4vik/reddit_is_big_growing_and_maybe_turning_evermore/ [...] This is an interesting article I found, and implies that reddit may be, rather than a "sharing site," more of "a kind of earnest Internet town hall." I personally like the idea, really. Whereas facebook is mindless "look at this!" reddit, for all of its flaws and circlejerks, does occasionally have really good discussion and debate that facebook and social media sites just, well, lack. I just thought that was interesting, I've never posted here before so hopefully this is enough elaboration and you find the article interesting. [....] Shareaholic’s statistics indicate a changing role for Reddit: The site is perhaps becoming more of an object of sustained attention, and less of a interesting-link clearinghouse. (Reddit darlings like image-sharing site Imgur, meanwhile, now boast their own communities—Imgur’s is now larger than Reddit.)

The outrage and sadness of Google Reader's demise
the extinction of Reader signifies the mainstream rejection of RSS as a hands-on tool for organizing a living library of real-time information flow. It has been eclipsed by social content discovery. As Brian Alvey, chief scientist of Ceros and creator of Blogsmith (Engadget's publishing platform) noted, "Dear RSS: @Twitter won." "putting content where the users live." - as every content platform is different, so should be the content. a tweet looks horrible on FB, a longer FB entry on Twitter looks horrible. a long email doesn't make sense on FB

Rethrick Construction
Now, I'm not saying that Circles is the one killer feature to bring down facebook--not at all. What I am saying, however, is that these two products are not playing on an even field. Like Microsoft and online Office, it is incredibly difficult for facebook to make fundamental changes to their product suite to answer competitive threats. It is for this reason I feel that Google+ has a genuine shot at dethroning facebook.
