Workers or Shirkers? Ian Hislop's Victorian Benefits
april 2016 by asterisk2a
An entertaining, provocative film in which Ian explores the colourful history behind one of the most explosive issues of our times - welfare: who deserves to be helped, and who doesn't. [... ] all hate, no heart. just spreadsheets. at Whitehall, no 11. [...] Benefit Street = victorian freak show/circus of curiosities [...] writing about others, "othering" them. demonising them or putting them on pedestals, making them saints. [...] IDS "a single mother wo aspiration is a product of the system" would correct that, a product of her environment (society) [ie gentrification - poor living w poor door to door. and everyone is looking down on them.].

Alternatives Management: Vertrauen als Ressource für Unternehmen - SPIEGEL ONLINE
august 2015 by asterisk2a
Das ist das Ergebnis nahezu aller Studien zum Thema Verbrauchervertrauen // &! bit.ly/1Vd5jYF - Twitter just made it more difficult to hold politicians accountable // Same with the Conservative Party deleting all their speeches and documents after they won majority in election and partnered up with libdems - bit.ly/1c7hHG6 &! bit.ly/1Epl5va // Auch Geld funktioniert nur dank Vertrauen [...] Der Systemtheoretiker Niklas Luhmann beschrieb Vertrauen daher auch als "Mechanismus zur Reduktion sozialer Komplexität". Ständiges Misstrauen dagegen mache unser Zusammenleben deutlich schwieriger, sagt Martin Schweer. [...] // &! bit.ly/1ILzkZU - Does honesty matter ...

Video ""Nein sagen" reicht nicht - Vergewaltigungsopfer fordern neues Strafrecht" | Kontraste | ARD Mediathek
february 2015 by asterisk2a

december 2014 by asterisk2a

BBC News - Living Wage 'key' for tackling health inequalities
december 2014 by asterisk2a
Changes to tax and benefit systems have more impact on health inequalities than changes to healthcare, new study found. Researchers said the introduction of a Living Wage and benefit increases made more difference than schemes to help lose weight or stop smoking. The study was carried out by the Scottish Public Health Observatory. It also concluded an increase in active travel - such as cycling to work - had a "minimally positive effect" on population health. Taxation on tobacco had a positive impact on health but made little difference to health inequalities, the study suggested. The gap between the health of the most and least affluent sections of Scottish society has widened since the 1970s, and is larger in Scotland than most of the rest of Europe. The Scot PHO report, called Informing investment to reduce health inequalities in Scotland, studied the impact of 11 policies over a 20-year period.

OECD moniert wachsende Ungleichheit zwischen Arm und Reich - SPIEGEL ONLINE
december 2014 by asterisk2a

BBC News - Independent Living Fund closure ruled lawful
december 2014 by asterisk2a
"Funding will be transferred to councils, but there will be no guarantee that the money will be used to support disabled people to live independently, or that former ILF users will receive the same levels of support, given the pressures on local authority finances." [...] The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has previously warned that closure of the fund will "result in loss of dignity and independence for many ILF recipients". It says that some 18,000 severely disabled people risk losing essential funding in breach of the UK's international commitments to support disabled people. ... BBC News - 'Colossal' spending cuts to come, warns IFS
december 2014 by asterisk2a
Current Austerity focus is running UK economy into the ground. Not towards the futures. Yes to cut waste. Yes to trim here and there. But there is no sight of investment into the future; ie pushing apprenticeships and industrial (STEM, research) practical skill set (dual college & university courses modelled after Germany), living wage, reduction on reliance on service sector and consumption. There is no inspiration. No future in his head. Just managing the status quo. Moving the pieces. Just like any other career politician. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30318870

Autumn Statement 2014: Osborne's Cuts 'Will See Public Spending Fall To Lowest Level In 80 Years'
december 2014 by asterisk2a
Tony Dolphin, senior economist at the Institute for Public Policy and Research, warned that Osborne's planned cuts were "implausible". "Given the scale of cuts in the public sector, [the OBR] can only make its growth forecast add up by assuming that consumer demand is boosted by households taking on more debt - and at an unprecedented pace. "Extraordinarily, the OBR thinks that by 2019 the household sector will have a financial deficit twice as big as in 2007 and 2008 when the financial crisis hit. As result, the household debt-to-income ratio is forecast 2 rise beyond its pre-crisis peak 2 over 180%. "This is pretty implausible. If the next government tries 2 follow the deficit reduction path set out in the Autumn Statement, it can only succeed in the short-term because the household sector takes on debt @ a faster pace than it did before the financial crisis. [this warning was heeded some years ago alrdy that consumer&corp would have to take on debt to spend to keep GDP # up!!!]

UK announces a 'Google tax' to stop companies diverting profits overseas | The Verge
december 2014 by asterisk2a
UK announces so-called “Google tax” The official in charge of the United Kingdom’s budget has announced plans for a so-called Google tax that will see the countries take a 25 percent cut of profits “generated by multinationals from economic activity here in the UK which they then artificially shift out of the country.” In other words: the UK is sick of companies shifting profits to Ireland to avoid paying taxes in the UK. &! out come the business lobby bbc.co.uk/news/business-30319845 "The Confederation of British Industry has warned over Chancellor George Osborne's plans for the UK to "go it alone" on corporate tax reform."

BBC News - Autumn Statement: What it means for you
december 2014 by asterisk2a
£12,500 to be free from paying income tax [...] announced that the personal allowance will rise to £10,600 in April rather than the planned £10,500 next year. &! Autumn Statement: A pre-election Budget - bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30318785 "In all but name this was a pre-election Budget. [...] From his first to his last sentence - from boasting about Britain's growth to unveiling the Coalition's version of the mansion tax - Chancellor George Osborne delivered his Autumn Statement with not just one eye but both fixed firmly on polling day. Aware that Labour's most potent political charge is that the Tories are on the side of the wrong people, the chancellor unveiled a series of tax hits on the rich - not just mansion buyers but non-doms too, as well as tax-avoiding banks and multi-national corporations. [...] In the run-up to an election there is, as someone observed recently, not just a massive budget deficit but a ballooning candour deficit.

BBC News - Long, long slog to mend public finances
december 2014 by asterisk2a
So the job of mending the public finances is a long way from over. The best performing, big developed economy in the world - that's us by the way, as assessed by speed of GDP growth - is generating far less tax than expected. So this year, the Office for Budget Responsibility expects the harvest for the Exchequer from taxation to be £7.8bn less than it predicted in March. And by 2017-18, it says the shortfall will be an eye-watering £21bn. & the biggest shortfall, roughly half of it, is in income tax, which reflects the creation of lots of new low wage jobs & the absence of meaningful pay rises for millions. [...] reflecting a change in the structure of the economy, rather than a passing phenomenon. [AUSTERITY] The OBR calculates that spending per head in real terms in 2019/20 on the public sector minus health and schools would be £1,290, or 57% less than in 2009/10. [...] &!&!&! http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/hilary-mantel-in-an-interview-with-spiegel-on-the-britain-of-today-a-1002263.html "Interview with Hilary Mantel: 'What's Happening in Britain at the Moment Is Really Ugly'" Hilary Mantel's historical novels are celebrated in Britain, but her critiques of the establishment are widely feared. In a SPIEGEL interview, she says her country is retreating into insularity and to attitudes prevalent in Victorian times. [...] It's a retreat into insularity, into a mood of harshness. When people feel they're being mistreated, they lash out against people who are weaker than themselves, immigrants for example. What's happening here at the moment is really ugly. The government portrays poor and unfortunate people as being morally defective. This is a return to the thinking of the Victorians. Even in the 16th century, Thomas Cromwell was trying to tell people that a thriving economy has casualties [...]

october 2014 by asterisk2a
[Muendige Buerger? Ne ...]

Jaron Lanier mit Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels ausgezeichnet - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2014 by asterisk2a

NorthernSparrow comments on Student loans have hit a record high of $1.2 trillion, putting a crimp in The American Dream of owning a home and starting a family. And it’s affecting the broader economy too.

But back then you could work hard and it would pay off for you; now you work just as hard and it doesn't. Also I had the freedom to choose a lower-paying career deliberately, a career that I found fascinating. I could only do that because I had no debt. I don't understand boomers who don't realize how lucky they were and how much it has changed.

Why Are Progressives Great at Morality, Terrible at Messaging? - YouTube
october 2014 by asterisk2a
The All New Don't Think of an Elephant!: Know Your Values and Frame the Debate by George Lakoff: tax evasion - tax avoidance = those people are the scum, the benefits of a welfare state ... financing public resources (infrastructure investment) ... private depends on the public!!! if private takes active measures to not bear the fair and reasonable weight they can afford ... than the public, anything that is provided for everyone, can not exist as is. [... you have to understand framing. how to frame x issue ... in terms that it feels/impacts everyone. every rational being seeing the issue at hand ... thus frame it in a moral and fairness / speak to the Gerechtigkeitssinn ... moral ... public resources/utilities give you freedom !!! < welfare state - ie abortion issue, birth control, reproductive rights is also about individual freedom - sex ed is also about freedom, kids making up their own minds, granting them the freedom to think for themselves - and not get their parents view. ]

Downward mobility: Lucy Mangan on the fall of the middle class - Telegraph
september 2014 by asterisk2a
And all this is, according to many, only the beginning. The American economist Tyler Cowen recently set out his vision of the future in a book, Average Is Over. Cowen predicts that the middle class will disappear and we will split into the historically and globally more common and “natural” binary arrangement of haves and have-nots. [...] All the “low-hanging fruit”, as he puts it in a previous book, has been picked and consumed – that is, free land, world-changing inventions (electricity, telephones and cars) and educational reform that enabled a vast swath of hitherto unrealised potential among the population to be fulfilled. [...] According to Cowen, there will be a small elite – perhaps 10 to 15 per cent of the population – who will still be able to add value to the increasingly sophisticated work computers can do. People who can do the few remaining skilled jobs that can’t be outsourced to distant, cheaper foreign competitors among a globalised workforce. ...

september 2014 by asterisk2a
Fairness: Warum der Mensch Gerechtigkeit will - SPIEGEL ONLINE
september 2014 by asterisk2a
